kh1958
Ruddresh Mahanthappa did show up for his concert in Plano. I was really not sure what to expect. It turned out to be a good concert. First part was Rudresh fronting a big band (including faculty members of Collin College and UNT graduates)--playing a mixture of arrangements of his own material and a few songs composed and/or arranged by band members. Then there was a small group portion of the concert, with Rudresh playing material from Bird Calls with the rhythm section of the big band. Finally, the big band returned to play Chillin' from Bird Calls. So it was an actual interesting musical event, especially to hear large group arrangement/performances of Mr. Mahanthappa's music, and his features with the small group. clifford_thornton
Don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but:Sonic Transmissions, curated by internationally renowned bassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten (The Thing, Atomic), is a three-day showcase that gives equal weight to some of the globe's best free jazz, post-punk, experimental hip-hop, and improvised music. The three-day bash – scheduled to take place from Thursday, September 10 to Saturday, September 12 – includes performances by Joe McPhee, Alvin Fielder, The Young Mothers, Spray Paint, Guilla, and more nationwide artists. The debut music festival at The North Door (502 Brushy Street in Austin) is built around the Texas-centric powerhouse and Flaten-formed The Young Mothers, which presents jack-out-of-the-box surprises ranging from spirited and moody takes on modern jazz and improv to grindcore and hip-hop side trips. Each member of the six-piece ensemble will present his respective solo project as well as collaborate with the nation’s top-flight improv musicians, such as Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians members Fielder and Avreeayl Ra; Houston-based double bassist Damon Smith, who has played with Cecil Taylor, Marshall Allen, and John Tchicai; and David Dove, a highly-regarded trombonist and founder of Nameless Sound in Houston.Tickets and more information available at http://www.tektite-records.com/The festival is supported by Epistrophy Arts, Astral Spirits and the City of Austin through the Economic Development Department/Cultural Arts Division believing an investment in the Arts is an investment in Austin’s future. JSngry
We're back at the Crown & Harp on Sept 21, probably a little longer set but probably starting a little later. so all of you folks who couldn't make it out last time because of the time, resolve all ambiguity about this one. Ken was noble, Ken was good (Ken is always noble and good, at least that I've seen), but Ken, hey, I got it then, and I'll get it for this one.But if any of y'all don't read this forum and are up late on 9/21, come check us out. Introduce yourself as that guy who doesn't read organissimo, and we'll autograph your bar tab in invisible ink, or something equally appropriate. I will, anyway, I like trying to make friends.
