kh1958
I received an email from the allaboutjazz.com regarding "Jazz Near You" and was a bit surprised to see that Herb Ellis was appearing in Farmersville, Texas on March 21. Didn't he die? I thought to myself, and sure enough he did die in 2010. The small jazz festival in Farmersville it turns out is dedicated to Herb Ellis, who was born in Farmersville. The festival will feature Wessel Anderson and Shelley Carrol.

kh1958
I'm intrigued by that 3/12 Leslie Pintchik Trio appearance; Michael Sarin is on drums. Yes, I'm not familiar with her at all, but she plays with some musicians I like at places I like. I may well attend. Thursday, March 12th, 2015 The Kitchen Cafe, 7:30 PM - 10:30 PM17370 Preston Road, Suite 415, Dallas TXw/Scott Hardy-bass, Michael Sarin-drums Before embarking on her musical career, NYC based jazz pianist and composer Leslie Pintchik taught English literature (as a teaching assistant) at Columbia University, where she also received her Master of Philosophy degree in seventeenth-century English literature. Leslie first surfaced on the Manhattan jazz scene in a trio with legendary bassist Red Mitchell at Bradley's. Red chose Leslie (along with guitarist Scott Hardy) for the warmth and powerful interplay he heard in their music. Red Mitchell wrote "Leslie Pintchik and Scott Hardy play miraculous music - in tune in all ways. And you can quote me on that." In the ensuing years, Pintchik formed her own trio with bassist Scott Hardy, and a series of drummers, including her current band-mates Michael Sarin and Satoshi Takeishi. Her trio performs regularly at New York City jazz venues such as the Kitano, Smalls Jazz Club, Bar Next Door, the Blue Note, Knickerbocker, and 55 Bar. Her trio was one of four finalists in the Cognac Hennessy Jazz Search; more recently, they performed as part of the JVC Jazz Festival at the Kitano Hotel in Manhattan, and at Scullers, Boston's premiere jazz club.Leslie, with Scott Hardy and percussionist Satoshi Takeishi, released her debut CD entitled So Glad to Be Here on Ambient Records in June 2004. In his review in Downbeat magazine, Ken Micallef wrote "... Pintchik's music is fresh, full of light and instantly invigorating.... So Glad To Be Here is simply a joyous release.... Pintchik and Takeishi express such playfulness in their musical conversations... that their elation is contagious." Her second CD, Quartets, also on Ambient Records, was released in October 2007. It features bassist Scott Hardy and drummer Mark Dodge, with special guest artists Steve Wilson on soprano and alto saxophones, and Satoshi Takeishi on percussion. Timeout NY wrote "Pianist Leslie Pintchik’s playing urges the same kind of reflection in her listeners that she uses to make things sparkle. Just check the reserved but gorgeous version of 'Happy Days Are Here Again' on her new album, Quartets." In the fall of 2010, Leslie released two new projects: her 3rd CD (We're Here To Listen), and a DVD/CD combo (Leslie Pintchik Quartet Live In Concert). Both projects again feature bassist Hardy, drummer Dodge and percussionist Takeishi. Jim Wilke, creator of the nationally syndicated "Jazz After Hours" radio show included We're Here To Listen on his "Best CD's of 2010" list, and the jazz journalist and scholar W. Royal Stokes included both projects in his "Best of 2010" list. Leslie released her latest CD In The Nature Of Things in March 2014. It features a stellar band: saxophonist Steve Wilson, trumpeter Ron Horton, bassist Scott Hardy, drummer Michael Sarin and percussionist Satoshi Takeishi. The New Yorker magazine called it "...one of the more captivating recordings to come out so far this year...", and Gary Walker of WBGO jazz radio called it "...a gorgeous display of the trio." In addition to composing the music for her band, Leslie has also written the liner notes for some notable recent jazz CD's, including Duologue by saxophonist Steve Wilson and drummer Lewis Nash (on the MCG label), and Daybreak by pianist Bruce Barth (on the Savant label). BeBop
Thank you for the continuing list, KH! It is much appreciated. Yes, thank you KH. I'm working in downtown Dallas, Sunday until Friday. I didn't spot anything I could squeeze in between office and hotel on a weekday evening. Is there a place downtown, maybe local talent? Thanks. kh1958
Not exactly in downtown Dallas but right next to it in Deep Ellum, there's The Free Man--they have music every evening--next Friday Shelley Carrol is there at 7. He's worth hearing--an excellent Texas tenor saxophonist. Shelley's also at Scat Jazz on March 4, but that is in downtown Fort Worth. http://www.freemandallas.com There are a number of music clubs in Deep Ellum, but they are not of the jazz variety. The Dallas Observer is the local free paper whose coverage includes the local music scene. http://www.dallasobserver.com In downtown Dallas proper, there are slim pickings for live music. There's a House of Blues in Victory Park (on edge of downtown). There's the Meyerson Symphony Hall, the Winspear Opera Hall, and City Performance Hall in the Art's District downtown. Very nice buildings but short on art/music. Thank you for the continuing list, KH! It is much appreciated. You're welcome. It's kind of fun to dig all this stuff up--there's more of it than I would have expected actually, albeit it's rather geographically dispersed.. JSngry
Live music of at least some kind of "jazz" tangenality 7 nights a week at The Balcony Club, although the lease situation has been kinda unstable from what I hear. Website is sketchy, and talent can be variable, but nothing ever outright sucks, and the manager Teddy is actually a nice guy! http://www.balconyclubdallas.com/index.html Sandaga used to be old-school jazz, now it's mostly new-school neo-soul/jazz. Someplace to go if you think you might be curious as to what's happening with all that, and/or if you want to witness the local outgrowth of the local Erykah Badu thing, of which jazz is in the mix at some level. http://sandaga813.com/ Last I heard, Shelley still has the Monday night Amsterdam gig, and has for the last 75-80 years. If he doesn't, somebody will, and the odds that it will suck are slim to none. http://theamsterdambar.com/thanks.html

Born in Beijing, now based in the UK, Xuefei Yang (Fei) is acclaimed as one of the world’s finest classical guitarists. Born following the Cultural Revolution, an era where Western music & instruments were banned, the fascinating story of Fei’s rise to the world stage, is that of a musical pioneer. She was the first ever guitarist in China to enter a music school, and became the first to launch an international professional career. Prodigious musical talent was evident at all stages. Her first public appearance at the age of ten, at the China International Guitar Festival, received such acclaim that the Spanish Ambassador in China immediately presented her with a concert guitar. The composer Rodrigo attended her debut concert in Madrid when she was fourteen and in 1995, when John Williams came to Beijing, he was so impressed with her playing that he gave two of his own Smallman guitars to her Conservatory especially for Fei and other top students to play. As a professional musician, Fei has performed concerts in 40 countries throughout the UK, Europe, Asia and North America. The demand for her music sees Fei keeping a busy international schedule including London's major venues (with several sell-out recitals at London’s Wigmore Hall), and concerts at the world’s most prestigious venues including Philharmonie Berlin, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Konzerthaus Vienna, Laeiszhalle Hamburg, National Auditorium Madrid, Dvorak Hall Prague, Carnegie Hall & Lincoln Center New York, plus the main venues across Asia. Fei gave both the first solo guitar, and first guitar concerto, recitals ever in Beijing's National Centre of Performing Arts. In 2003 she performed 54 concerts for the “Night of the Proms” Tour, appearing in Belgium, The Netherlands and Germany, to a total audience of over 800,000 people. Fei is regularly invited to perform concertos with leading orchestras. This season sees Fei performing with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Detroit Symphony, Barcelona Symphony, the Hallé Orchestra, China National Philharmonic and Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra. In addition to her solo career, Fei regularly appears in collaborations with other musicians. This season sees her performing chamber music with the Elias String Quartet, giving duo recitals with cellist Jian Wang, collaborating with tenor Ian Bostridge in a recital at London's Wigmore Hall, and with flautist Sir James Galway at the Beijing Music Festival. kh1958
It's official, then. Dallas kills. Apparently it was cider that killed the Amsterdam. "Owner Mike Scheel says he's venturing off to try his hand making cider. The Texas Alcohol Beverage Commission has three types of licenses it issues: manufacturers, wholesaler/distributors, and retailers. You're only allowed to hold one of these licenses at a time, with the exception of brewpubs, so he's bailing on the bar."

From the German newspaper, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, “the Colombian plays the harp unlike anyone else on earth. His hands, seemingly powered by two different people, produce a totally unique, symphonic fullness of sound, a rapid-fire of chords, balance of melodic figures and drive, served with euphoric Latin American rhythms, and the improvisatory freedom of a trained jazz musician….” Castaneda is a master at realizing beautiful complexities of time, while skillfully drawing out lush colors and dynamic spirit. Even the Wall Street Journal propounds: “Mr. Castaneda strummed, plucked, rubbed, jabbed and pounded on his cobalt blue Llanera harp as he conjured different shaped notes, harmonic textures and steady bass rhythms from the instrument’s 34 strings. About the only thing he didn’t do was light it on fire!” International Music Festival "African Rhythms"" Sunday, May 24, 2015, 6:00 p.m. Ruth Taylor Recital Hall at Trinity University (click here for map/directions) Artist Bios "I'm not a jazz musician," "I'm really a storyteller through music." -Randy Weston Pianist Randy Weston grew up surrounded by some of the greatest musicians in jazz. But it was his deep connection to Africa that inspired his personal style of music. "I search for the traditional music wherever I go. I try to find the oldest musicians I can find," he says. "And I hear the foundation of what we do in the Western Hemisphere is coming from African civilization." "I want to hear the oldest music I could possibly hear," he says. "The music of Africa is music that is totally in tune with the universe and the earth and the sky. Traditional people, their music is very difficult to imitate, because it's the story of their lives." "This music is totally in touch with Mother Nature. Mother Nature is always improvising — it's cold, it's hot, it rains, it snows... this music is in touch with the universe.” International Music Festival "Time, Place, Action" Friday, May 15, 2015, 7:30 p.m. Tobin Center for the Performing Arts Carlos Alvarez Studio (click here for map/directions) Artist Bios Featuring Vijay Iyer: MacArthur Genius Fellow, Harvard Music Professor and Grammy nominated jazz pianist with the award-winning Brentano String Quartet of the Yale School of Music. Best known as a jazz pianist, Iyer has released 17 albums, and in 2012 was named jazz artist of the year by Down Beat magazine. The New Yorker dubbed him "extravagantly gifted" and "brilliantly eclectic.” In the work titled "Time, Place, Action," stylistically speaking, Iyer draws on everything from hard-bop jazz, to Indian ragas and Western classical music. For that reason, some people might say that he's all about blending musical styles, but Iyer counters: "It's not about styles or genres, it's about communities - because that's where styles come from. My music comes from real-life connections with real people.” Program The Debussy Quartet in G minor, Op. 10 1 Animé et très decide 2 Assez vif et bien rythmé 3 Andantino, doucement expressif 4 Très modéré - En animant peu à peu - Très mouvementé et avec passion Brentano String Quartet Vijay Iyer piano solo Intermission Vijay Iyer "Time, Place, Action" for Piano Quintet In Memory of Imamu Amiri Baraka "Time, Place, Action” was commissioned jointly by Da Camera (Houston, TX), 92Y (New York, NY), Chamber Music Society of Detroit, and San Francisco Performances, for the Brentano Quartet and Vijay Iyer.
