kh1958
At the Carver Center in San Antonio on March 21, with music by the Avery Sharpe Trio featuring violinist John Blake: RAISIN' CANE: A Harlem Renaissance Odyssey The Carver Community Cultural Center proudly presents, Raisin' Cane starring the award winning actress Jasmine Guy backed by a superb original score performed by the Avery Sharpe Trio on Friday March 21, at 8 P.M. Raisin' Cane serves to pay honor to one of the greatest periods of cultural development among African Americans in the U.S. in the 1920's. The words and thoughts of Langston Hughes, Countee Cullen, Zora Neale Hurston, W.E.B. DuBois and many others became the voice of a new generation of African-Americans looking forward but still struggling with the past and present. Raisin' Cane features striking photos and paintings of the artists and inhabitants of Harlem during this period, and is a unique theatrical experience unlike any other. Raisin' Cane is a window on this critical point in our history. Starring the award winning actress, singer and dancer Jasmine Guy, a modern day historian and the acclaimed Avery Sharpe Trio, Raisin' Cane celebrates and honors the legendary voice of the Harlem Renaissance through text, song, music, movement and imagery. Ms. Guy is not only recognized as an accomplished actress, singer, and comedienne, but also as a director, writer, and speaker. Avery Sharpe is considered one the greatest Jazz bassists of his generation. His exceptional works have been performed in every musical configuration from orchestras to Grammy award winning jazz recordings. Mr. Sharpe is joined by the renowned percussionist Kevin Sharpe and acclaimed jazz violinist John Blake. Raisin' Cane was written and conceived by Harry Clark. JSngry
SXSW this week - and it seems to be more commercial than ever. Specifically.....Lady Ga GA is the Keynote Speaker. What's up with THAT? SXSW is all about "the industry", and has been for some time (from the beginning, really...the intent was "exposure", so hell, whre does that road lead except to the industry, assuming that real exposure is really what you want?). GaGa's today's Madonna, somebody who we all think is nothing more than just some pre-fab bullshit but who ends up resonating & then sticking around long enough and for whatever reason(s) to become an "icon", and therefore a useful tool for the industry, before she becomes either a has-been or an institution (she did a skit about that on SNL, and it was actually pretty...self-aware, I thought). That's what's up with that. Me. I'll take Madonna any day. She ended up making some good records. Haven't heard that out of GaGa yet. But then again, I'm an old guy, so my criteria are most assuredly not relevant to that or any other discussion they'll be having at SXSW. BFrank
Yeah - it's industry and commercialism, but there has always been strain of quality alternative that makes it worthwhile. This will be my 7th year, but I'm not sure how much longer I'll continue to go. Having said all that, I DO have a list longer than my arm of groups to check out this week. So it won't be boring, that's for sure. And as far as Ga Ga, I partially joke because I really haven't watched or listened to her at all and have friends who like her. It's just that commercial pop music isn't my thing, so I don't pay attention to it.

epistrophy arts
Bobby Bradford 4 in Austin https://www.artful.ly/store/events/2831 Epistrophy Arts presents: Bobby Bradford 4 Austin’s Historic Victory Grill Sunday, March 23 doors 7:30PM, music 8:00 $13 advance tickets available at $15 door (512)517-2248 epistrophyarts@gmail.com epistrophyarts.tumblr.com https://www.facebook.com/groups/epistrophyarts/ Bobby Bradford (Los Angeles): trumpet, cornette Frode Gjerstad (Norway): saxophone, clarinet Ingebrigt Håker-Flaten (Austin): bass Frank Rosaly (Chicago): drums Texan free jazz legend with Austin roots, and a heavy-hitting international and intergenerational ensemble in a special concert at Austin’s historic home of jazz and blues The Victory Grill. Trumpeter/cornettist Bobby Bradford is great Texan musicians who helped fellow Texan Ornette Coleman radically redefine and transform jazz in the early 1960s. Bradford’s original music builds from a tradition that spans the broad range of jazz. His spiraling free-bop energy, warm tonal spectrum, lyricism and far-out explorations has been featured in collaborations with a wide range and number of significant figures such as John Carter, David Murray, Charlie Haden, Eric Dolphy, Nels Cline and many more. Bradford lived in Austin and graduated from Huston Tillotson University. He has been in Los Angeles since the 1960’s, where he has served on the faculty of Pasadena City College and Pomona College. Bobby Bradford was playing with British drummer John Stevens (another one of the music’s significant restructuralists) in the 1980’s when he first collaborated with Norwegian saxophonist Frode Gjerstad. Gjerstad is not only a great saxophonist and clarinetist; he is also a mentor to a new generation of Norwegian musicians who would develop an edgier avant-garde jazz, separate from Jan Garbarek’s “Nordic School”. Gjerstad’s collaborators reflect the quality and range of his output. Significant partnerships have been with the likes of William Parker, Johnny Dyani, Peter Brötzmann, Hamid Drake, Derek Bailey, and even noise musicians like Lasse Marhaug. The American and Norwegian veterans will be backed by two of the music’s most in-demand rhythm players of the current generation. Drummer Frank Rosaly is an integral presence in Chicago, intersecting the jazz, rock, improvisation, and experimental music communities. Ingebrigt Håker-Flaten. The passionate and expressive Norwegian bass player (who moved to Austin several years ago) provides the intensive and solid foundation for the trio The Thing. Ingebrigt is part of numerous projects both locally and internationally. These groups include, Scorch Trio, Atomic, and locally, The Young Mothers and Plutonium Farmers. more info http://frodegjerstad.com/ This project is funded and supported in part by the City of Austin through the Economic Growth & Redevelopment Services Office/Cultural Arts Division believing an investment in the Arts is an investment in Austin’s future. kh1958
That was probably taken from Hannibal's website, which says: "After graduating from Texas City High School he took courses for a week at North Texas State University. In 1970 after viewing the documentary “The Last Graves of Zimbabwe,” he moved to New York to attend the University of New York City. Immediately he met and played with many of his music heroes some of whom were Roy Haynes, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Thelonius Monk, Duke Ellington, Gil Evans, Elvin Jones, Mc Coy Tyner ,Charles Mingus, Thad Jones, Pharaoh Sanders, Lee Morgan and more."
