My quintet has been going through some personnel changes. We have lost one guitar player and have gained another.

Todd Parsnow is playing with us now. He currently is on Roy Hargrove's band. So when he is on tour we have to sub out his chair, or go chordless. Come check him out if you are in town. He is a wonderful musician, and he really brings a lot to the table.

Our steady gig has moved to another location at last. We had been playing Mondays. As of this month we will be playing every Tuesday at a nice place across the street from the State Fairgrounds in Dallas.

The Meridian Room has a top notch menu, yet everything is very affordable. They also have a vast beer selection, including many micro brews.

recommendedations:

Crawfish Chili

Portabello Sandwich

Cuban Sandwich

We will be there starting March 5th, playing 9 - midnight. No cover.

Greg Waits - trombone

Jim Sangrey (aka Frank Brutali) - tenor sax

Todd Parsnow - guitar

Mark Wilson - bass

Garry Granger - drums

See you Tuesdays?! Drop in & say hello.

Guest Artist Recital: Jean-Michel Pilc, Jazz Piano - Room: Kenton Hall Building: College of Music Building When: 3-5-2013 @ 8:00 PM

Now a US resident for more than a decade, French native Jean-Michel Pilc taught himself to play piano. After coming to New York, Pilc formed a trio with François Moutin (bass) and drummer Ari Hoenig. The trio became a popular fixture in Big Apple venues such as the Blue Note, Birdland, Knitting Factory, and Sweet Basil.

In 2000 Pilc’s trio released a pair of acclaimed recordings, Jean-Michel Pilc Trio - Together - Live at Sweet Basil, NYC - Vol. 1 & 2 (ARecords). The trio then released Welcome Home in 2002 followed in 2003 by Cardinal Points, which features Jean-Michel's extended work, “Trio Sonata,” created through a grant from Chamber Music America's New Works: Creation and Presentation Program, funded by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. In 2004, Pilc released a solo recording, Follow Me, then came full circle in 2005 with a live trio recording, Live at the Iridium, New York, introducing his new ensemble with Thomas Bramerie on bass and Mark Mondesir on drums. The trio released a follow-up, New Dreams, in 2007. Pilc’s last two albums were both released in 2011 on the Motema label Essential, a live solo piano recording, and Threedom, featuring his legendary trio with François Moutin & Ari Hoenig, which has re-formed in 2010 under the collective name Pilc Moutin Hoenig. When not performing solo or with his trio, Pilc teaches masterclasses and clinics.

The Evan Weiss / Davy Mooney group was rather good, it turns out, even though Scat Jazz is a poor venue. I could hardly hear the band during the first set, the crowd was so loud. Many of the noisy people left after the first set, so I was able to move closer to hear better; the band seemed to gell during the second set. This fellow Evan Weiss seems to be a pretty strong composer.

At any rate, there are more dates in the next few days in the area for this temporary assemblage.

Tonight (Sunday), at 7 at Sweetwater in Denton.

Monday, at 10 at Amsterdam Bar in Dallas.

Tuesday, at 8 at Dan's Silverleaf in Denton.

My quintet is now playing on Thursday nights in Dallas at a place across the street from the State Fair grounds.

The Meridian Room has terrific dishes. Part of our deal is that we get a free meal, and nothing I have eaten there has failed to ring the bell. Nice staff too.

And now we are on Thursdays instead of Tuesdays, the crowds are much better knock on wood.

As usual:

Greg Waits - trombone

Jim Sangrey - tenor sax

Todd Parsnow - guitar (Todd tours with Roy Hargrove's RH Factor)

Russ Allor - bass

Garry Granger - drums

Try and stop by if you are so inclined! Say hello and hang out. No cover.

We play from 9-12 now.

My quintet (aka the jazz refugees) is back at The Meridian Room / Dallas (where mr sangrey and friends held court last week).

Of course, Jim shares the front line with me most of the time. (he's a busy guy doncha know)

We'd like to be able to hit every Thursday, but pay gigs keep getting in the way. Damn!

Next month it should steady up and we'll be there every week for the foreseeable future.

We play from 9-12.

Great food (and i mean GREAT...just ask Jim; he agrees), a wide selection of beers (micro brews, imports etc), and generally a good time to be had. The staff is nice (and Dana is cute)

Give us a holler if you pop in!

UNT 2014 Jazz Lecture Series:

2014 Jazz Lecture Series
Submitted by Jazz at UNT on Fri, 12/20/2013 - 1:48pm

Our Jazz Lecture Series was started in 1982 by Neil Slater, who had just started at UNT after many years in the New York area. Neil said that he couldn’t take the students to New York, but he could bring New York to the students. Since 1982, our students have been able to learn from and talk with guest artists from New York and lots of other places. Here's the lineup for spring 2014. Lecture series sessions are 9:30-10:50 and 2-3:20 in the recital hall in the music building and are open to the public. Please contact us in advance if you plan to bring a group of any size.

1/28 Jeremy Pelt, trumpet
2/4 Billy Harper, saxophone (afternoon session only)
2/11 Julian Lage, guitar
2/18 Marshall Gilkes, trombone
2/25 Ryan Truesdell, composer-arranger
3/4 Phil Markowitz, piano
3/18 Bob Cranshaw, bass
4/22 Joey Baron, drums
