I continue to be haunted (literally...I've been stopping randomly day and night recalling certain passages, how alive they were) by the sound of those Gil Evans arrangements as played live...it's like, ok, I've heard the music on record for decades, and have formed a rich, vivid mental picture of it in a virtual 3D type of imaginary sound. And then to hear those same sounds in a REAL 3-D environment, coming out of instruments on a stage and not out of speakers "placed" somewhere...it's an upsetting experience, upsetting in a good way, but not easily recovered from, at least not for me. That writing has some kind of mojo, some kind of serious mojo...I told Brenda last night, that if I could, I would go out to hear that music played 7 nights a week, faithfully, and she could come along whenever she wanted, but I would go with her or without her. She understood, I think/hope. And then I realized that that was not a possibility even when Gil was alive, never mind now, and..geez, that just sucks.

The 1:00 gets kudos, not for being a badass college jazz orchestra in the forefront of today's jazz education whirlwind (or any other such kind of bullshit), just for having the humility and skill set to serve as honest deliverers of some of the most stimulating/evocative/deep/whatever music ever scored for an ensemble of any kind in any idiom. As well, to Ryan Truesdell, for treating this music as the orchestral music it is, and preparing the band according and appropriately.

If Ryan Truesdell comes to anywhere within non-fatal distance of where you live to do a Gil Evans Project presentation, and if you have any even modest sense of enjoyment for Gil Evans music, do what you have to do to get there. Records, no matter how well recorded/played back, do not give you the full sense of the reality of this music. I almost wish I hadn't gone, now it's like I've had a taste of it, and where to go for the next one? Where?

Wanted to go to Houston tonight, but life got in the way. That and tickets went faster than I could accommodate. Hope that all who are able to go are touched and moved.

Steve, hope you enjoy those Evans concerts. It's not "the same" as hearing Gil in his time, there's that gap that just has to be accepted. But I got over it with Trusedell's CD, took me about three listens to accept the fact that nobody was ever going to play with that exact feel unless they there at the time, and then...oh well, ok? It's still written at such a damn high level of...everything that if you just play it right, it takes care of itself.

Now, that's a far sight easier said than done, and to one extent or another, that's true of all music. But this stuff, shall we say, responds quite well to proper execution, if you know what I mean.

Depending on which year it was, I would give a year off my life to hear "The Barbara Song" played really well live. If we're talking about the not so good years, more than one. Quality over quality, etc.

Riding home now. It felt like a very special experience. Wayne's tone was gorgeous on both soprano and tenor - he played a lot of soprano. The compositions ebbed and flowed, like a cracked mosaic. Wayne didn't solo as much as he inserted comments. It seemed like a type of musical, non-verbal story telling, as if the composer was telling stories and reminiscences from his life. In fact, almost the whole program seemed composed - while played with verve and vigor and wit, I didn't detect much improvisation. I was glad to have experienced the concert, but I can't say the music moved me.

That was a wonderful concert, an experience very much worth the drive. My sole complaint was that from my vantage point, the tenor was not quite loud enough in the mix; otherwise the sound was good, and once he switched to soprano about midway into the concert, he was coming in loud and clear. I thought he was amazing on soprano sax tonight.

I'm looking forward to hearing sitarist Shahid Parvez on April 19 (from his website):

"Ustadji's music is novel and evolving, but his influences are numerous and easily recognizable to a knowing ear. The fine balance of traditionalism and innovation of an Ustad Vilayat Khan, the palatial structure and spiritual depth of an Ustad Amir Khan, and the dazzling brilliance and musical imperatives of an Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan are all marvelously present in Ustadji's performances. Ustadji also remains open to good music wherever he hears it.

Ustadji has now entered the peak of his formidable musical powers. He maintains a rigorous worldwide tour schedule and leaves audiences in awe after each performance. One can safely speculate that Ustadji's forefathers are extremely gratified that their tradition, developed over so many generations of hard-working musicians, is now not only heard but also learned by dozens of students around the world.

Professional Biography

Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan is privileged with both belonging to an illustrious musical family, and for achieving success in not only preserving the tradition but in pushing its boundaries to even greater heights of aesthetic beauty. He is one of the most brilliant musical gems of the famous Etawah Gharana and belongs to the seventh generation of this musical lineage. His family has produced the most revered and influential figures in Hindusthani Classical Music including the likes of Sahabdad Khansahab, Imdad Khansahab, Enayet Khansahab, Waheed Khansahab and Vilayat Khansahab.

A very young Shahid Parvez was initiated into the rich music of the Gharana by his illustrious father and Guru Ustad Aziz Khan, a famous musician and a noted composer and the son of the legendary Sitar and Surbahar virtuoso Ustad Waheed Khansahab. As is the custom, Ustad Aziz Khan first initiated his son into vocal music and tabla, before training him on the Sitar over many years with all the intensity and rigor that had made this Gharana famous. The young Shahid Parvez was recognized as a child prodigy and had started performing in public by the time he was only eight years of age. Dogged perseverance and hard work over the years have been rewarded with an extra-ordinary technical prowess and a mastery over 'Layakari'. One of the numerous achievements of Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan is to have mastered both Vocal Music and the 'Tantrakari Baaj' and then fuse them in such a way as to bring this complex amalgam within the easy reach of all.

Few instrumentalists have enjoyed so much of love and admiration as Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan has, from the music loving fraternity worldwide. He is a Top Grade artist of A.I.R. and a recipient of numerous national and international awards including the 'Sur Shringaar', the 'Kumar Gandharva Samman', the "M.L. Koser Award', etc. He is also a recipient of the prestigious "Sangeet Natak Academy Award" of 2006. He has performed in all major musical festivals in India and abroad including the Festival of India held in the US, Europe, USSR, Canada, Middle East, Africa and Australia, enthralling the audience everywhere. With numerous LP records, audio and video cassettes, CDs and DVDs, numerous awards and accolades, and a distinguished performance career in India and around the world, he is widely recognized as one of the greatest sitar-players of the world.

For Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan, the Sitar and Self are identical entities, and music is not just a discipline but life itself – vibrating and pulsating and full of colour. The power of his music is most immediately encountered in the highly charged sound quality he conjures from his Sitar and the sparkling intelligence that is the hallmark of his improvisatory music. By sheer precision and an astute artistic sense he has made for himself a place in the limitless, infinite universe of Indian Classical Music. As the Rajasthan Patrika once said –"After listening to Ustad Shahid Parvez, the future of Sitar is still bright after Pandit Ravi Shankarji."

This turned out to be anything but a last minute substitute concert--these musicians were were all masters--I've never seen a Sarangi before, it's a bowed instrument that produces a sound that resembles a violin. Pandit Ramesh Mishra was astounding on this instrument. At concert's end, it was announced that he had recently returned to music after being hospitalized for two and a half years.

Snehashish Mozumder's mandolin playing was on the same high level. As was the tabla player. A wonderful concert. My only disappointment was that the concert schedule for the Indian Classical Music Society of DFW does not currently include any more instrumental concerts for the rest of 2014.

Austin Texas

May 27, 8pm

Museum of Human Achievement

Lyons and Springdale in the Blue Genie Art Complex (MAP)

$10 admission at the door.

All Ages

Ingrid Laubrock (saxophones) and Tom Rainey (drums) are celebrating the release of their first duo recording titled And Other Desert Towns by touring the States. The duo's music draws on the several years and many projects they have shared since they began working together. Their experiences of playing original compositions, free improvisations and even standard songs inform this intimate setting of improvised duets. Between them, they regularly perform with Anthony Braxton, Tim Berne, Mary Halvorson, Kris Davis, Tony Malaby, Mark Helias, Angelica Sanchez and many others.

"And Other Desert Towns is showing well the paths of intuition they’ve established between one another. Rainey is consistently one of the most inventive drummers in New York (…) Laubrock is, as always, wonderfully lyrical and traipses about as freely as Rainey, occasionally matching pace with him but more often scurrying in circles around his quick figures." - New York City Jazz Record

Playing with The Bob Moses Trio this Friday April 25 at The Fiesta Jazz Festival in San Antonio. This group is actually called "The Heart Breath Trio" with drummer Bob Moses, guitarist, Michael Gregory Jackson and trumpeter Phil Grenadier. Come hear us, if you can :)

Good luck in San Antonio! And try to play Houston, if you can!

I wish I could be in Houston tonight, as the Afro Horn concert last night was tremendous. Led by Francisco Mora-Catlett (longtime Sun Ra Arkestra drummer and member of M'Boom), with a very strong group, including Sam Newsome on soprano saxophone, and Alex Harding on baritone saxophone.

This is Tex Allen the trumpet player, who played with Gil Evans (Svengali), not Tex Allen the singing cowboy actor.

One leader date on Muse.

Oh, I know who he is. Phylicia Rashād's brothr, also played on a mid-70s Louis Hayes Muse date, iirc. And I think I have an old Lab Band "Spring Concert" LP, '69, I think, that he takes a solo on with one of the bands. Also have that Muse leader date, it's a good enough "late night" album.

Just did not know he was still around. Not a name you hear every day, or every year, or even every decade, sometimes.
