Christiern Posted May 6, 2005 Report Posted May 6, 2005 The Harper Brothers came and went....or did they? Quote
Chrome Posted May 6, 2005 Report Posted May 6, 2005 Boy, the possibilities are endless ... how 'bout: That's funny ... they don't look like brothers. Quote
Dr. Rat Posted May 6, 2005 Report Posted May 6, 2005 Winard's put out some good records of late for Highnote. Though the covers weren't as good. --eric Quote
Dr. Rat Posted May 6, 2005 Report Posted May 6, 2005 Philip, it appears, live in Europe: Philip Harper Philip Harper was born in Baltimore, Maryland, but was raised in Atlanta, Georgia. He started played trumpet when he was ten under the tutorage of his brother. Later he studied at Hartt School of Music with Jackie McLean. At the age of 18 Philip moved to New York, where he started working and recording extensively, with such musicians as "Little" Jimmy Scott, Jimmy McGriff, Betty Carter, Etta Jones, Harry "Sweets" Edison, Bill Cosby and Cedar Walton. Between the years 1986 and 1988 he was a member of Art Blakey´s Jazz Messengers, with whom he also made several live recordings. After leaving the Messengers he formed a group with his brother Winard on drums, The Harper Brothers. The group toured throughout the world and made several widely successful albums for Polygram/Verve. Philip Harper has made over 50 recordings, both as leader - his solo albums "Soulful Sin" and "The Thirteenth Moon" on Muse Records - and sideman, which has earned him number one position on numerous jazz play lists and critic polls. As well as touring with various groups worldwide, he also teaches and gives workshops in several conservatories in Europe. from Touche records site --eric Quote
sheldonm Posted May 6, 2005 Report Posted May 6, 2005 I've seen Winard a couple times in the past year.....a bundle of energy and his band was quite good! Mark Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted May 6, 2005 Report Posted May 6, 2005 The look on his face is priceless... it's like, "Yeah, I'm banging a white chick. What's it to you?" Quote
CJ Shearn Posted May 6, 2005 Report Posted May 6, 2005 lol at the cover.. "yeah cat, I'm smooth....... WHAT?? WHAT??" Quote
Dave James Posted May 6, 2005 Report Posted May 6, 2005 I really like Winard's latest called "Come Into the Light". It's a live recording on Savant Records. The saxophone player in his band is a guy by the name of Brian Horton. I had not heard him before, but he ain't half bad. Nice Jazz Messengers style playing on this one. Phillip, on the other hand, hasn't led a recording session for over 10 years. Up over and out. Quote
Free For All Posted May 6, 2005 Report Posted May 6, 2005 I really like Winard's latest called "Come Into the Light". I'm thinking of a similar title for Phillip's. Quote
catesta Posted May 6, 2005 Report Posted May 6, 2005 Winard Harper gets all kinds of play on the XM satellite jazz channel. Quote
RDK Posted May 6, 2005 Report Posted May 6, 2005 "Came and went?" Judging by that pic, "came and stayed" is more like it! Quote
marcello Posted May 6, 2005 Report Posted May 6, 2005 Thanks for the thread,Chris. Phillip is in Europe, I am told. He has, what is called in the trades, "personal-health problems". I hope he got it out of his system because he seemed to be a nice cat and a fine trumpet player. Last saw him with Cedar at Sweet Basil when they recorded. Quote
Spontooneous Posted May 6, 2005 Report Posted May 6, 2005 Philip's back in Atlanta. So Winard told me a couple of months ago. Quote
