This was Baby Face Willette's first Blue Note appearance. And although it's overshadowed by Grant's "Grant's First Stand" and BFW's own "Face To Face", it still is a recording that's vastly overlooked and underdiscussed.

If you have this, and haven't pulled it out for a listen in a while, do yourself a favor today and do so immediately.

This really is Lou dipping his toe into the deepest of funk. He didn't mess around and basically dives into the greasiest, nastiest organ trio to ever hit a studio. Dixon, Green and Willette. Badass shit.

Yes, it has been on CD both as a TOCJ (which I have myself) and a JRVG. I suppose there is a good chance that it will turn up again fairly soon in the ongoing TOCJ24 series, and it should also be a serious candidate for a "domestic" release. It's really odd that it hasn't been released on CD outside Japan yet.

Thanks for the reminder. Pulled this out earlier today and thoroughly enjoyed it. Lou Donaldson was really in top form that day with the right combination of groovers around him!

'Watusi Jump' got an instant replay!

"Oh, I'd rather have-a ham in my sandwich than cheese,

but complainin' wouldn't do any good...

Oh, oh and..."

Oop, wrong album... ;)

I promise to pull out my JRVG of this one today and give it a spin! B-)

And, if I'm not mistaken (since I don't have a discography in front of me), there's an outtake that hasn't been on any reissue, or am I thinking of another great LD date. Guess I'd better go check...

Don't have that disc., but I'd love to hear the complete session. The whole album seems short, just 5 tunes. So maybe they didn't make one they intented to. Love to hear an aborted attempt anyway.

Yes, the session ended with an untitled Donaldson blues, which is listed as rejected. Once again one wonders: how bad can it really be?

With that group. Not. However, it's got some blues stuff on there, and Alfred might have thought it too much of the same thing and limited the tracks to 5. That's my guess. Of course, I doubt this is not too high up on the Cuscuna scale of inquiry.

I don't own the Donaldson Mosaic set but this album does not seem to be part of it! Any reason?

Why is the Mosaic set called 'The Complete Blue Note Lou Donaldson sessions' then?

I don't have that Mosaic or the listing of it in front of me but doesn't it cover the slightly earlier period of the late 50s, around the time of 'Blues Walk', 'Light Foot' etc?

The Lou Donaldson Mosaic covers 1957-1960 but for some odd reason also includes "Gravy Train" from 1961. (but not "Here 'Tis" also from 1961)
