Jazz Kat Posted May 4, 2005 Report Posted May 4, 2005 I'm looking for some groups with an organist that play some progressive jazz. You know, the kind of, 'out there' jazz. Any suggestions? Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted May 4, 2005 Report Posted May 4, 2005 Some more clarification would help (what does "out there" mean?), but perhaps Tony Williams Lifetime with Larry Young would fit the bill. Mike Quote
Jazz Kat Posted May 4, 2005 Author Report Posted May 4, 2005 It's hard to explain. I'm having an easy time finding what I am looking for with guitar players. Ex: Pat Metheny, John Scotfield. So it's not really avant garde. I'm looking for keyboard players, (preferablly organ players, ) and preferablly groups, that play modern jazz along the lines of what the guys I mentioned above are doing. Some funk, some contemporary jazz.. Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted May 4, 2005 Report Posted May 4, 2005 Maybe various things that John Abercrombie has done? (with Jan Hammer at first and most often Dan Wall) Mike Quote
Jazz Kat Posted May 4, 2005 Author Report Posted May 4, 2005 Isn't John Abercrombie a guitarist? Think organ players. I really have no clue what to look for. I know what I want, but don't know the first place to look. Quote

Guy Berger Posted May 5, 2005 Report Posted May 5, 2005 What about Zony Mash? (I haven't heard them, only of them.) The recommendations of Abercrombie, MMW and Lifetime are excellent. Guy Quote
Joe G Posted May 5, 2005 Report Posted May 5, 2005 Don't know if you were aware that Metheny did an album with Larry Goldings. Mike Brecker was the leader; it's called Time is of the Essence. Quote
Jim R Posted May 5, 2005 Report Posted May 5, 2005 Some funk, some contemporary jazz.. Have you checked out much by Larry Goldings? I can't say I'm familiar with all of his work, but I've noticed that he's done some things that are kind of "progressive" in recent years (in terms of selecting tunes from outside the more standard fare for jazz). Somebody else here might be able to elaborate on that better than I can. At any rate, you can't go wrong checking him out, regardless of whether he's exactly what you're looking for. Quote
Jazz Kat Posted May 5, 2005 Author Report Posted May 5, 2005 Allright heard some Goldings samples! Love it! How does Borders do with stocking his cd's? Quote
Jazz Kat Posted May 5, 2005 Author Report Posted May 5, 2005 Maybe its time to buy the Organissimo album! Quote
BFrank Posted May 5, 2005 Report Posted May 5, 2005 Take a crack at Jeff Palmer. He might be a little "out", but Abercrombie does play on some of his albums, like "Island Universe". Quote
tonym Posted May 5, 2005 Report Posted May 5, 2005 Maybe its time to buy the Organissimo album! You haven't yet you mean? Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted May 5, 2005 Report Posted May 5, 2005 Soulive be funky. Did I mention Medeski, Martin, and Wood (MMW)? Quote
nemo7 Posted May 6, 2005 Report Posted May 6, 2005 try some niacin (not the inositol hexanicotinate kind, unless you wanna) Quote
