bertrand Posted May 4, 2005 Report Posted May 4, 2005 (edited) Tonight Matthew and I bought a copy of the new 'boss' CD for my wife for Mother's day. The CD is extra thick because one side is a DVD. The disclaimer says it may not play in all CD players. The review in the Wash. Post made it sound like this was not a problem - it actuallly plays on all machines. Is this true, or are there documented instances of non-playability? Home CD player? PC? Car player? More worrisome - will it fuck up my CD player if I put this thing in there because it's extra thick? I love my player and don't want to ruin it. No wonder people steal music. Record companies are stupid. They could have done what Dorn did with those recent Monk CD/DVD combos: an audio CD, and a separate DVD. Bertrand. Edited May 4, 2005 by bertrand Quote
RDK Posted May 4, 2005 Report Posted May 4, 2005 Haven't had any problems yet with the Dual Disc format. Plays in all CD/DVD players that I've tried. Quote
Tjazz Posted May 4, 2005 Report Posted May 4, 2005 There are European versions that have a CD an DVD on separate discs. Quote

bertrand Posted May 4, 2005 Author Report Posted May 4, 2005 Hmmm... So why did they issue it on a single CD here??? Bertrand. Quote
wolff Posted May 4, 2005 Report Posted May 4, 2005 It was also released on vinyl. Vinyl??? How stupid!!!! Quote
Parkertown Posted May 4, 2005 Report Posted May 4, 2005 Just beware of using them in slot-loading players... Quote
bertrand Posted May 4, 2005 Author Report Posted May 4, 2005 RDK, Did you try it in a car CD player? That's probably where she'll use it the most. Thanks, Bertrand. Quote

John L Posted May 4, 2005 Report Posted May 4, 2005 It worked in my car CD player. But that doesn't mean that it will work in yours, or that my car CD player hasn't already contracted thick CD syndrome. The bastards! Quote
medjuck Posted May 4, 2005 Report Posted May 4, 2005 I've been playing it in my car. And I've played the DVD side in my DVD player. Love the 5.1 sound and having the lyrics on the tv screen. But the "music video" is really pretentious. Considering his love of Dylan you'd think he'd have learned not to explain what his songs mean. Dylan probably would have just claimed it was all based on a play by Chekov. Quote
GregK Posted May 4, 2005 Report Posted May 4, 2005 I absolutely HATE this ridiculous dualdisc format. It won't play in my discman, or the computer, and when I try to take it out, I can't help but get fingerprints on the DVD side, which is up when it is played as a CD. Why not just release it as CD + DVD? Why have video content at all? Totally pointless. The lyrics are in the booklet. I don't want to have to turn the TV on to listen to music! Good record though Quote
bertrand Posted May 4, 2005 Author Report Posted May 4, 2005 (edited) Two dumb questions: 1. Does the DVD side only play in a DVD player, or can the audio part of the DVD play in a CD player? 2. Is an import really the only way to get it as separate discs, or are they planning on issuing it later in a normal format? Perhaps I should return it, wait until they come to their senses, and get it for her at a later date. Look what happened with the Miles boxes: after being available in a fucked-up package for a while, they were issued in much more accessible packaging. Glad to see that no one dislikes the album. Is 'Reno' really about anal sex? Bertrand. Edited May 4, 2005 by bertrand Quote
GregK Posted May 4, 2005 Report Posted May 4, 2005 Reno is a graphic description of an encounter with someone, who has lost his lover, with a prostitute. Not the best song on the record, but really not worth all the big deal press it seems to be getting. I'm hoping it gets rereleased in a more sensible format. I'd like to listen to it on my discman or load it onto my mp3 player, neither of which I can do now. Oh, the DVD side plays in DVD players only. Quote
RDK Posted May 4, 2005 Report Posted May 4, 2005 Don't let the format confuse you. The CD side is just like a CD. The DVD side is just like a DVD, with a video but also the full music album in surround sound. Given that you can pick this up for $12.99 (it was even $9.99 at Circuit City last week), you can consider the entire DVD side a free bonus. I really don't understand the complaints about the DualDisc format. It's played on at least five players I've tried it on - CD player, DVD player, boombox, computer, car - with no problems. Obviously some people are having bad luck playing the disc (sorry, Greg), but these cases seem relatively few. If you do have problems playing it in your car (for example) you can always burn it as a CD-R. Quote

Tjazz Posted May 6, 2005 Report Posted May 6, 2005 The Canadian CD/DVD combo is available from mymusic.com for $11.99 plus $3 for shipping. (free shipping if you order $30 of stuff) Quote
