Guest akanalog Posted May 3, 2005 Report Posted May 3, 2005 i am listening to a radio broadcast of a byard lancaster session from 9/1/77. i was wondering if anyone knows the personal for this session because it is some very cool music. a long 40 minute jam which keeps flowing and changing, sometimes getting a little latin and sometimes sounding a little "out to lunch"-ish and sometimes hinting at "my favorite things". there seems to be a trumpet player and a vibes player and a few percussionists involved along with a drummer and bassist. any info is appreciated. Michael Fitzgerald Posted May 3, 2005 Report Posted May 3, 2005 I don't see anything in the general discographies that matches the date or the instrumentation you gave. Is this an issued record or something else? Mike Quote
relyles Posted May 3, 2005 Report Posted May 3, 2005 (edited) This is all the information I have for that particular session: Lancaster, Byard 09/01/77 WXPN-FM, Philadelphia, PA FM Byard Lancaster (reeds), Bill Lewis (vib), Yusef Yancey (tp) a.o. Edited May 3, 2005 by relyles Quote
relyles Posted May 3, 2005 Report Posted May 3, 2005 (edited) I have several other unissued Lancaster sessions from relatively the same time period (78-79) in which Keno Speller is the percussionist. Edited May 3, 2005 by relyles Quote
king ubu Posted May 3, 2005 Report Posted May 3, 2005 Isn't there a second sax on those My Favorite Things and Bags' Groove parts? My notes say so, but I can't tell for sure, as it's been some time since I listened to this one. "Out to Lunch" came to my mind, too! Quote
Guest akanalog Posted May 3, 2005 Report Posted May 3, 2005 ubu, there might be a second sax. my listening was too casual i guess to pick it up. i will listen again soon. Quote
l p Posted May 3, 2005 Report Posted May 3, 2005 there is a second sax. tenor. because there is a rhythm section, this is the most accessable lancaster as-leader show that i've heard. this show is unissued. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted May 3, 2005 Report Posted May 3, 2005 Funny, I always think of Khan Jamal as playing vibes with Byard, but Bill Lewis is plausible (they had that great duo on Philly Jazz). Wild guess, but J.R. Mitchell is probably the trap drummer. Quote
