Guest ariceffron Posted June 23, 2003 Report Posted June 23, 2003 do you guys have this record. they were playing some of it on the radio today- it was really something. Wynton kelly, Doug Watkins, Elvin Jones. I have never heard of it before. Ditto metrojazz. but it is good, i'm telling you Quote
brownie Posted June 23, 2003 Report Posted June 23, 2003 Aric, welcome to this board! Let the fun begin. This Pepper/Knepper date was really good. I have a Japanese reissue of it. Listened to this after getting news that Knepper had passed away. One of the great MetroJazz sessions that need to be reissued on CD. Quote
JSngry Posted June 23, 2003 Report Posted June 23, 2003 I believe that Metrojazz was the MGM jazz subsidiary before they bought Verve from Norman Granz. Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong, but not a lot of their stuff got transfered to Verve that I'm aware of (Sonny's BRASS/TRIO is a notable exception), and not all that much of it has made it to CD. This sounds like a really good one. Certainly a top-shelf lineup. What are the tunes? Quote
brownie Posted June 23, 2003 Report Posted June 23, 2003 The tunes to the Pepper/Knepper MetroJazz album were: - Minor Catastrophe, - All Too Soon, - Beaubien, - Adams in the Apple, - Riverside Drive, - I Didn't Know About You, - Primrose Path The Jones Brothers MetroJazz LP also made ito to Verve CD. Wish they would also rerelease the other MetroJazz (Randy Weston/Lem Winchester at Newport, the Gigi Gryce quartet album) records. There are also great sessions by Helen Merrill, Melba Liston, Teddy Edwards, even a Sam 'The Man' Taylor album that is very nice. Quote
Dan Gould Posted June 23, 2003 Report Posted June 23, 2003 Isn't that Teddy Edwards MetroJazz a live date with Joe Castro where one side was Sonny Rollins? I think the Teddy side got orphaned because the Rollins has been reissued, I'm told. I saw this up on ebay not too long ago though I let it pass by. Quote
brownie Posted June 23, 2003 Report Posted June 23, 2003 That's the one. The Teddy Edwards side hasn't made it yet on CD. The Edwards/ Rollins LP was reissued in Japan years ago and I am a lucky owner of this. Quote
