Guy Berger Posted April 28, 2005 Report Posted April 28, 2005 I'll be digging out this set for the next few days -- I've listened to it a few times since I got it last fall but not given it the attention it deserves. I'd be glad to hear any interesting thoughts by other board members. Guy Quote
jazzbo Posted April 28, 2005 Report Posted April 28, 2005 I really dig Tiny's drumming on the live sides, and Horace's early piano appearances on the studio sides. I need to dig these out again too, great stuff! Quote
mjzee Posted April 28, 2005 Report Posted April 28, 2005 Sound quality's not that great. Liner notes admit that no original sources were used. I've wondered, since Cuscuna has since seemed to have found the Roost masters (witness the Sonny Stitt and Johnny Smith Mosaic boxes), he has any plans to redo the Getz box. Quote
Sundog Posted April 28, 2005 Report Posted April 28, 2005 (edited) Some great Jimmy Raney on this one. Not sure I've ever heard a guitarist play as fast and clean as Jimmy does on "Parker 51". Edited April 28, 2005 by Sundog Quote
TheMusicalMarine Posted April 28, 2005 Report Posted April 28, 2005 I first listened to those sessions about a year and a half ago. Probably my favorite Getz. His version of "Thou Swell" kills me, and if you can't hum/whistle/tap your foot to "Potter's Luck" you're out of your mind. Awesome music. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted April 29, 2005 Report Posted April 29, 2005 I had ancient vinyl of this stuff and the cd sound is better than I'd hoped. Good stuff. Quote
Brad Posted April 29, 2005 Report Posted April 29, 2005 Recommended here also. Some like this better than the Mosaic. Quote
J.A.W. Posted April 29, 2005 Report Posted April 29, 2005 Recommended here also. Some like this better than the Mosaic. I have the Mosaic and prefer it to the later set. Great music. Quote
king ubu Posted April 29, 2005 Report Posted April 29, 2005 I love the Roost set! One of my favourite box sets ever! In those early Getz was so good, his sound just reaches out for your soul. And there's a few miraculous moments, musically ("Imagination", for instance, and much of the live date...) Quote
tonym Posted April 29, 2005 Report Posted April 29, 2005 'Imagination' indeed. Ditto, one of my favourite sets and the first disc in particular as a date is some of my favourite Getz, from any period. 'Yesterdays' is a marvellous piece of tenor playing as is 'You Go To My Head'. I also love the studio quintet date where they play 'Autumn Leaves'. A real desert island set for me. I cannot praise it enough without getting all slushy. Quote
skeith Posted April 29, 2005 Report Posted April 29, 2005 I like this set a lot. It's some of the best Getz!! Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted April 29, 2005 Report Posted April 29, 2005 There are tracks in this set that are NOT in the Mosaic - three from the Storyville gig, I believe. And yes, I know the set limits/concepts are not the same (Roost Getz vs. Getz w/Raney), but I mean newly discovered stuff that *would* have made it into the Mosaic set. Mike Quote
BruceH Posted May 3, 2005 Report Posted May 3, 2005 I love this set! Some of my favorite Getz playing is here. Every home should have a copy. Quote
AllenLowe Posted May 3, 2005 Report Posted May 3, 2005 (edited) this is the best Getz there is, though I gotta admit I still have some problems with his occasional creeping narcissism - which, in my (admittedly minority ) opinion, eventually took over - but VIVA Haig, Raney, and Tiny Kahn! Peggy-Ann Posted May 3, 2005 Report Posted May 3, 2005 Has anyone compared the Complete Roost Recordings to the Complete Roost Sessions? If so, how do they differ? Quote
king ubu Posted May 4, 2005 Report Posted May 4, 2005 Has anyone compared the Complete Roost Recordings to the Complete Roost Sessions? If so, how do they differ? If you're talking the Spanish/Andorran (Jazz Factory/Definitive) edition, probably just a rip of the Blue Note/EMI set, if you're talking the Japanese single discs, I can see two volumes (1 CD each), each more expensive than the 3CD set... bluesoul Posted October 15, 2017 Report Posted October 15, 2017 Set on eBay for twelve bucks. One of my favorites. Quote
Tom 1960 Posted October 15, 2017 Report Posted October 15, 2017 Wow! Somebody needs to snatch that right up. Quote
