So I looking my 'Trane Collection... and reading stuff wondering about this set... For those of you who have it.... reviews???? We had a brief discussion about this set a few months ago. Summary: it's worth it if you like the other live Trane from this period. Guy Quote
GregK Posted April 28, 2005 Report Posted April 28, 2005 Absolutely essential. I love this set, second only to the Village Vanguard recordings, for me. Lots of repetition of titles, but of course never the same way twice! Plus there are versions of Afro-Blue, Blue Trane, and Mr PC. The sound is uneven and there are discographical errors in the booklet (detailed on David Wild's site), but the quality of the playing is worth it. Wonderful music from the early 60s period of Coltrane's quartet- if only there were more live releases from this period! Quote

l p Posted April 28, 2005 Report Posted April 28, 2005 jc didn't vary his set lists from one show to the next very much on the 1961, and then on the 62-63 euro tours. by taking mostly only portions of concerts, this set unfairly emphasizes that problem. i wouldn't recommend this box, except for the few complete shows that it has. i'd look for the complete shows. BFS Posted April 29, 2005 Report Posted April 29, 2005 Good music BUT, Tyner's humming/singing along on a lot of the numbers is a major distraction. Was he experiencing his "frustrated vocalist" phase during this period or what?!? Quote
dave9199 Posted April 29, 2005 Report Posted April 29, 2005 That's not Tyner, that's Jones or Garrison. Quote
Claude Posted April 29, 2005 Report Posted April 29, 2005 (edited) Must be Elvin, because it can also be heard on passages where piano and bass sit out. Edited April 29, 2005 by Claude Quote
GregK Posted April 30, 2005 Report Posted April 30, 2005 I've never understood how humming along is a problem. It always puzzles me when people complain about Keith Jarrett. It's part of the music. What's the problem? Quote

Ron S Posted April 30, 2005 Report Posted April 30, 2005 Maybe a disc of humming would interest. If you're going to record one, Chuck, I'd like to audition. B-) Quote
Ron S Posted April 30, 2005 Report Posted April 30, 2005 So, you a hummer? Nope, and don't even own one: Quote
