Guest Mnytime Posted June 26, 2003 Report Posted June 26, 2003 I been hering talk that the cut was caused by the laces (or whatever the laces go in/around) on Lewis' glove(s). Is this true, and if so, and it was intentional, is that not grounds for disqualification? it's a red "hering" Jim! actually, that's an interesting point you make, I wonder if one could rough the laces up a bit, or embed something very small but sharp...wonder if the gloves are long since into a trash can....it would be a shame if true, cuz Lewis has always seemed a cut above the average fighter...Pun was unintended at first, but now it is intended. Yes things like that have happened before, which is why the gloves are always checked before the fight and in some cases after the fight. I didn't see what actually caused the cut. The Klitschko camp claims it was a head butt, but the Lewis camp of course says it was no head butt. Quote
Gary Posted July 3, 2003 Report Posted July 3, 2003 More news from the BBC today - Lewis set for Klitschko rematch The first fight was stopped on a technical knock-out in the sixth round World heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis says negotiations for a rematch with Vitali Klitschko are already underway and the fight is likely to take place on 6 December. Lewis beat Klitschko after gaining a sixth-round technical knock-out in Los Angeles two weeks ago. The Briton was then expected to turn his attention to a big-money bout with Roy Jones Jnr. Jones has captured the imagination of the boxing public after stepping up from the middleweight division to claim the WBA heavyweight title last March. But Lewis says a second fight against Ukrainian Klitschko is what really interests him. "I'm opting more for the rematch - I enjoyed that fight," he said. "They (Klitschko's camp) should agree to it. If not, then we will have to look at other options, like Roy Jones, or call it a day." One obstacle to a rematch could be the condition of Klitschko's left eye. I don't mind the rematch because I have more heart than him and I'm tougher than him Lennox Lewis The Ukrainian required more than 50 stitches to gashes above and below the battered eye that ultimately resulted in the fight being stopped. "We want our own independent doctor to go there and check the eye and if he will be available," Lewis said. Lewis failed to impress in the fight against Klitschko, weighing in at more than 256 pounds and displaying plenty of ring rust. Lewis's preparations for the fight were less than ideal. He acceped the bout on 10 days' notice after his original opponent, Kirk Johnson, was forced out with an injury. The Briton vowed to be better prepared next time. Lewis retains title "I will have a lot more sparring realising that's who I'm fighting," he said, before adding he would knock Klitschko out in five rounds. "I'm just going to give it to him from round one. "My jab is my big weapon and I'm going to open up the other side of his face. "He's lucky, he would have been knocked out. I don't mind the rematch at all because I realise I have more heart than him, I'm tougher than him and this time I'll be more prepared for him. "He was gone, he was holding on for dear life. I was dragging him around the ring. He was lucky they stopped it." Quote
Guest Mnytime Posted July 4, 2003 Report Posted July 4, 2003 (edited) "My jab is my big weapon and I'm going to open up the other side of his face. His jab is his big weapon? Since when? He is well known for having one of the worst jabs in the history of Heavyweight Champions. It was not until Steward became his trainer that he even started to throw a Jab that actually looked like a Jab. Let alone one that actually bothered anyone. Edited July 4, 2003 by Mnytime Quote

Dmitry Posted July 10, 2003 Report Posted July 10, 2003 My best friend takes boxing lessons in LA from a former Soviet champion. Man, this guy is in a great shape for a 65 year old! I asked him about the fight. His opinion was 1.The fight definitely had to be stopped because the cut was bad. 2.Lewis would've finished off Klit had the fight went on. Quote
