Chrome Posted April 25, 2005 Report Posted April 25, 2005 I recently picked up "Great Divide" and Freeman's playing really caught my ear ... kind of Lovano-esque, but edgier. Can anyone else recommend some of other CDs? Quote
Uncle Skid Posted April 25, 2005 Report Posted April 25, 2005 I really enjoy Serenade and Blues and Have No Fear. Both of these are available direct from Chuck. Quote
Alexander Hawkins Posted April 25, 2005 Report Posted April 25, 2005 All I have under his own name is 'Have No Fear', which I really enjoy. Also a nice place to hear John Young, a pianist whom I don't know beyond this record, but whose playing I enjoy a lot. Also, there 2 or 3 tracks from George Freeman's (brother of...) Delmark CD...damn, name escapes me...anyway, some pretty cool organ trio stuff (one mad track has Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre (ts) and Lester Lashley (tb)). Anyway, I like this appearance too. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted April 25, 2005 Report Posted April 25, 2005 Have No Fear is no longer available (these were Japanese pressings from my licensee). Serenade And Blues is from the same session. His SteepleChase recordings get few mentions but they are very fine. Quote
Larry Kart Posted April 25, 2005 Report Posted April 25, 2005 Agree on the Steeplechases. I also like "Young and Foolish" http://www.worldsrecords.com/pages/artists...eman_31187.html a concert recording from 1977 with longish tracks -- always a good thing with Von, in my experience. Quote
montg Posted September 23, 2005 Report Posted September 23, 2005 I picked up my first Von Freeman recording the other day (The Improvisor), solely on the strength of the recommendations on this board. What wonderful music! Sincere and beautiful playing--so thanks to all who hipped me to Vonski. BTW, the recording quality of The Improvisor is top notch, particularly for an 'on location' recording. Mixed by Jim Anderson. Quote
montg Posted September 23, 2005 Report Posted September 23, 2005 I'll add that the duet between Von and Jason Moran on Ellington's "I like the sunrise" is one of the most moving jazz performances I have ever heard. I've been playing this track over and over for the last half hour and it's playing as I write this. Man, it's priceless...Von's tone is so vulnerable and pure. Quote

Chuck Nessa Posted September 23, 2005 Report Posted September 23, 2005 FWIW, I should have some more copies of Have No Fear (from Japan) in about a month. Here is a pic Terry Martin took at the sessions (in spite of the wrong date) in June 1975. Quote
Joe G Posted September 23, 2005 Report Posted September 23, 2005 I like that shot - thanks for posting it. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted September 24, 2005 Report Posted September 24, 2005 I like that shot - thanks for posting it. ← Von is telling me to get my own damn vodka and orange juice. He considered it "medicine" - He had a cold, see the tissue in his hand. Quote
Free For All Posted September 24, 2005 Report Posted September 24, 2005 (edited) His SteepleChase recordings get few mentions but they are very fine. Don't overlook these! I'm on 'em too....but you should get 'em anyway! Edited September 24, 2005 by Free For All Quote
DukeCity Posted September 24, 2005 Report Posted September 24, 2005 Paul-- I never you you did those sides with Von. Looks like a pretty happening band. Are they still in print and available? --Glenn Quote
Free For All Posted September 24, 2005 Report Posted September 24, 2005 They came out fairly recently (within the last 2-3 years) so they should be available. Quote
Big Wheel Posted September 24, 2005 Report Posted September 24, 2005 Am I the only one who saw that picture of Chuck and Von and thought of Burt Reynolds on Celebrity Jeopardy? Quote
