Let's say someone like McCoy Tyner, or Ahmad Jamal, or any other well know jazz artist releases a new CD, how many would you think he sells?

Is it between 3000 and 4000?

or 4000 and 5000?

or could it be nearer to 10000?

I don't know for sure, but I suspect it's closer to 3,000 (or less) than 10,000. For some reason 5,000 world-wide sticks in my mind. (Don't know whether it's because it's a nice round number, or because I read it somewhere.)

The only indication I have is the fact that hatOLOGY CDs are released in editions of 3000 CDs, which usually are around for a couple of years.

On my copy of Dave Liebman "Bookends", it says "2nd edition of 3000 CDs". Liebman would be in the same selling league as Tyner I guess. But HatOLOGY CDs are rather expensive (the Liebman 2CD set costs $27), and more difficult to find in the US than most jazz labels.

Seems every popular jazz album, is "The best selling jazz album of all time." I've heard Kind Of Blue, Time Out, The In Crowd, A Love Surpreme, and many more, as "The best selling jazz album of all time." What's up with that.

Just to demonstrate the difference in the listening public's taste between then and now,I'll flatten you with a number I heard today. I know it flattened me. Back in the 40's, Artie Shaw's recording of Stardust sold better than 16 million copies. Wowie! :excited:

Leibman selling in the same league as McCoy? No way. Not even close. I'd be willing to bet McCoy sells at least twice as many copies as Liebman of any new release in the last 10 years.
