mikeweil
Read this only now - what a shock indeed! One of the major figures of European jazz is gone. And way too young. RIP, NHOP - your bass tone will keep ringing in my ears!
slide_advantage_redoux
I first heard him on those old Black Lion LPs of Dexter live at Montmarte. Damn, what a loss. He was such a tasteful and sensitive musician.
James
I know a lot of people here don't dig Oscar Peterson but if you can tolerate him, you should listen to the track "On Danish Shore" from Oscar's "If You Could See Me Now" CD on Pablo from 1983. I'm listening to it right now and has truly awesome playing from everyone esp. NHOP. Clear, fast, anchored, strong. All his strengths on display on this 8 minute plus track. (The tune was written by both Peterson and Pederson). Joe Pass and Martin Drew round out the quartet. This is a good album all round. Along these same lines, his propulsive lines on the Pablo release "Skol" (Peterson, Pass, Grappelli, Roker) were what attracted me to Niels as a young listener. I still get goosebumps listening to his work on the intro. to the final piece -- "Skol Blues." Niels appears on a seemingly countless number of my favorite recordings. His passing, premature as it was, is indescribably sad.

JohnT
The morning before I heard this really sad news last week I was playing his "This Is All I Ask" CD. NHOP was one of my all-time favorite bassists!!! His "Double Bass" CD with Sam Jones is one of my desert island discs along with all his other Steeplechase CDs. I've been at a loss for words all weekend. RIP NHOP and thanks for all the great music!!!

jazz4u
According to my mother, my father, Warne Marsh, truly loved Niels as a player and a person. In my opinion, thanks to NHOP, the Copenhagen sessions from the mid seventies are the best things my father recorded. My respects to his family. -Jp

Alon Marcus
This gang of Peterson, NHOP and Joe Pass had really got me into jazz when I first started listening to this music. At first I was amazed at NHOP's skill and agility but later I realized that he had a rare musicality and sense of swing. He could groove like nobody else. The duet "Chops" (a very bad name for a great album) with Joe Pass is the best opportunity to hear both these musicians converse and create.
