jazzbo Posted April 28, 2005 Author Report Posted April 28, 2005 I'm not making predictions like that. . . this thing doesn't go the way I figure it would, so I'm just riding it out watching what happens. I like Vonzell and I'm rooting for her. I like Scott too. . . . Not sure why, just do. Dislike the others big time. Quote
chris Posted April 28, 2005 Report Posted April 28, 2005 As far as I'm concerned Vonzell should get bounced. Not because she's black, but because she's so generic. There are a million like her, and watching her talk or interact outside of singing is like watching a mannequin programmed for "Whitney Emotion" I like Bo, the last remaining rocker, who just wants to have a good time and sing. I suspect the sympathy vote for Scott will run out soon, with he and Carrie (who should have been gone a LONG time ago too) going next. Then Bo, then who knows. The Clay Aiken contingent could put Fedorov over the top-- they're all ganging together since Clay lost Quote
jazzbo Posted April 28, 2005 Author Report Posted April 28, 2005 I knew so many Bos and wannabe Bos in this music scene here that I think HE'S generic and he doesn't float my boat. He's competent. . . but boring. I think Vonzell is a bit on the generic side but I think she's the best singer there and I think she has a personality and stance I'd rather see validated by a win as idol than any of the others. . . . That's just me. Quote

He's competent. . . but boring. In one sense I agree-- but in terms of American Idol as a competition I'd prefer to see a rocker go far rather than yet another Vonzell. If forced to choose I'd much rather hear more generic rock on the radio than more generic Whitney wanna-bes too though Quote
Dan Gould Posted April 28, 2005 Report Posted April 28, 2005 What is it about Carrie that y'all don't like? She's cute, she sings better than most of the remaining contestants ... is it a kneejerk reactions against country songs? Quote
Soul Stream Posted April 28, 2005 Report Posted April 28, 2005 Although I don't think he's the "best" singer by any means. I think Scott has two or three really good wide vibratos that are pretty unique. As far as they all go, he seems to be the only one that has anything unique about him. Quote
jazzbo Posted April 28, 2005 Author Report Posted April 28, 2005 Personally, Dan, Carrie doesn't do ANYTHING for me. She's good, but she doesn't spark me at all. It's not a reaction against country, even when not doing country she fails to "reach" ME. But she has, I'm pretty sure, plenty of fans. SoulStream, yeah, Scott does have some interesting vibrato stuff going on. . . . I like how emotional he is. I'm an emotional guy as well. I can relate. Chris, I'm just not that fond of rockers overall. . . . I'd rather NOT see one win the competition. Hey, I'd have liked to see that cat that did Moody's Mood for Love go right to the top! Quote
chris Posted April 28, 2005 Report Posted April 28, 2005 As a reformed rocker, I must take exception to you, Sir!! Quote
Jazz Kat Posted April 29, 2005 Report Posted April 29, 2005 Blah! American Idol and its participents suck. That's it. I hate trying to pick out ones even close to anything good. Because the bottom line, it's crap. Quote

Then why do you bother reading and crapping all over this thread? **** I was less shocked the other night that Constantine was booted than that Scott was in the top 3. I can't stand the guy and can't understand who is voting for him. They don't let guys in prison use the phone do they? Quote
jazzbo Posted April 30, 2005 Author Report Posted April 30, 2005 I like him. I like the emotion he conveys, I like the shakiness of some of his work because it gives it a depth, and I like the songs he chose more than some of the others' song choices. To each their own. Quote
jazzbo Posted May 18, 2005 Author Report Posted May 18, 2005 Well, Vonzell Solomon is still in the running at least til tonight. . . . I really think there's a big chance she'll go home tonight which is a shame because I favor her over the other two. Carrie has never done anything for me and Bo is just boring for me. Quote
RDK Posted May 18, 2005 Report Posted May 18, 2005 I like Vonzell, too, but I think she's going home tonight. Bo's the winner after last night's performances. Quote
Soul Stream Posted May 18, 2005 Report Posted May 18, 2005 I think American Idol itself is steering the public towards Bo. Vonzell is obviously the best singer and most seasoned-looking performer. Bo's voice is o.k. and his stage manner is schloky to me. Carrie's an Okie From Muskogee..a little bit country a little bit rock and roll...a little bit I've seen it before. However, I think Idol's picked 2 African American R&B singers the last 2 seasons and I think the brass sees the middle class buying public that is Idol's core audience as more likely to BUY whitebread middle of the road stuff...ala Clay Aiken (Bo, Carrie). Vonzell killed "On The Radio." Bo ruined the Stones. And Carrie was in a different key for half the song on the Shania Twain tune. Quote
jazzbo Posted May 18, 2005 Author Report Posted May 18, 2005 I'm with you Mike, on all points. I've seen one too many Bo. Hell, I had to suffer auditions for one too many Bos in my garage in the eighties! Quote
chris Posted May 18, 2005 Report Posted May 18, 2005 I don't buy the racial explanations, personally. Vonzell is incredibly generic-- turn on the radio and you hear a hundred singers just like her, black and white. Bo is generic too, but his style has been bounced out of the top 40 for quite a while, I'm all for seeing it come back and replace some of the current tripe. If I voted, I'd vote for him just because. The real shock to me is that Carrie "Can't Sing a Note" is still in there. What's the story with that? I've yet to hear her *not* butcher a song... Quote
jazzbo Posted May 18, 2005 Author Report Posted May 18, 2005 (edited) Oh I definitely think the producers through the judges ARE pushing the white performers. . . . I'm not saying that Vonzell ISN'T generic, I just think she's more talented than the others, and she appeals to me ten times more. Ironically, I think that without that nudge Carrie and Bo may not have been in the top three. The public that seems to tune in to Idol in droves and vote have in fact voted for R and B singers over white rocker and country persons in the past seasons. Edited May 18, 2005 by jazzbo Quote
Soul Stream Posted May 18, 2005 Report Posted May 18, 2005 I don't want to turn it into a race thing. But, realistically Idol's biggest selling stars have been 2 performers, Kelly Clarkson and Clay Aiken. Idol's audience is voting one way and BUYING the other. Let's vote for Rubin and buy Clay. I just think the producers are trying to get back to the actually winning Idol being the best seller. Quote
Dan Gould Posted May 19, 2005 Report Posted May 19, 2005 Well, Vonzell is finished, though I think she's talented enough to have a future. I've started a job with evening hours, so I haven't seen the last two episodes and won't be watching the final either, but I do think its an interesting matchup, country vs rock. Isn't this the first time since the inaugural year that there's no black performer in the final? I think it will be real interesting to see who comes out on top, just considering the voting patterns of past seasons. On consistent performance, I would rate Bo ahead of Carrie, though I haven't been as down on her appeal as some people are. On the other hand, I think the odds favor Carrie because I suspect the audience skews younger, and that will work in her favor. In fact, if this show were on in the mid-late 90s, when country radio was so huge, I'd have rated Carrie an overwhelming favorite. But I still think she'll win. Quote
jazzbo Posted May 19, 2005 Author Report Posted May 19, 2005 (edited) Well, I don't care any longer. Bo and Carrie. . . what a choice. I don't really care for either of them! Rock or country. . . not an exciting choice for me either! Edited May 19, 2005 by jazzbo Quote
LAL Posted May 20, 2005 Report Posted May 20, 2005 Agree, it's gonna be a rather dull finals. But I'll at least check out the results show next Wednesday. I believe they're gonna bring back the rest of the finalists for a group performance, FWIW. So, anyone buy the Idol 4 CD recently? Quote
Aggie87 Posted May 26, 2005 Report Posted May 26, 2005 Someone tell me I didn't just see Kenny G on stage with Lynyrd Skynrd. Quote
jazzbo Posted May 26, 2005 Author Report Posted May 26, 2005 I just saw the last ten minutes play back on tape. It sure looked like a boring night. I really could care less about Bo or Carrie. Not surprised Carrie won, but I think she's just plain mediocre, not sexy, not a great singer. UGH. And yes that WAS the G Man! A new tv low! Quote
