...or go for particular ones first.

I can afford maybe 2 or 3 this month, which ones? Or do I wait for the box at the 'right' price.

I would possibly go the box route as I've had lots of enjoyment from my other Miles' boxes.

Sorry if it's bin' dun. Just need reassurance. :P

FWIW, I'm going for the single CD's. So far - Seven Steps to Heaven, In Europe, Live in Tokyo, Miles in Berlin. It's strange, but the indvidual CD's in total are cheaper than the box. Haven't decided on Funny Valentine and Four and More yet, since I already have the double CD set on Columbia from more than a decade ago.

The new My Funny Valentine and Four and More sound transformed!

Looks as if there is going to be a portion of the box set, possibly a disc's worth, that will remain in the box set for now. . . . If you can swing it from www.yourmusic.com the box set may be the best route to go. (This is one of the best boxes in the Miles series of boxes in my opinion).

That does create a problem then.

Well, buy with confidence the singles as far as sound quality. I've even found the new remasterings in the box set to best the sound on Japanese DSD cds I have of these titles from a few years ago!

I'd suggest Live in Europe be in the mix.

Antibes of Berlin? I've had the luck of owning a Japanese CD of the Berlin set for a long time, and I always loved it! Beautiful *sounding* recording, too! It creates the illusion that you could hear a feather drop to the floor at the Philharmonic! I really like it!

tony: if you're up for good design, I'd save some pennies, or rather pounds, and wait till you can afford the box - it's definitely the best one, as far as design is concerned! I find it superb! (Far away from being just the last one that they still had to do, to fill up that not so good period of Miles' career, far from!)

I was thinking Antibes. . . I always think of this as the lp "Miles In Europe" and somehow "Live" snuck in there.

To me this is THE performance on the box set.

Guess I couid look this up, but I'll just ask here. What's on the 7th disc in the box set that's not included on the single Cd's? A brief answer is fine.

Thanks

Looks like I'll have to go for "Four" and "Valentine" after all. $$$$$$

First off, I was initially planning to get individual CDs as well but then realized that a few of the live tracks ("Autumn Leaves" from the Feb. 64 concert, "Bye Bye Blackbird" from the summer '63 concert -- the only "BBB" Miles recorded with Herbie, Tony & Ron) weren't going to be on those. That's a fucking crime. So while I haven't done picked up the recent remastered versions yet, I'm definitely getting the box once I get around to it.

Second, how about one of our kindly board members gets the Yourmusic box and sends it over to you?

For the Miles 60's quintet box, I bought the 'missing' tracks on iTunes and will eventually burn a CD. I hope to do the same for the Seven Steps Box. So far, I bought the individual CDs of Berlin and Tokyo, but those are not missing tracks (Tokyo is CD #6 from the box, and Berlin is #7).

It's the cheapest way to go, although some people are against the whole downloading thing. It's not my ideal choice, but it's convenient and quick and cheap.

Are you volunteering Guy? :P

You know... I would but I'm the worst slacker on this board. (Also, I'm not a Yourmusic member -- I was planning to join in June or July. If nobody else volunteers then PM me and I'll do it.

Well thanks Guy, but I know you're all busy fellas. I wouldn't ask that of any of you. :tup

So that's why I've just come back from a 120 mile round trip with a selection of discs from somewhere I knew they were cheap-ish and in stock. :D

I went for In Europe, Four & More, My Funny Valentine & In Berlin

They also had the Seven Steps & Tokyo albums but with the help here and my logic (wanting to have Wayne's entry point into the band plus prioritising Coleman's tenure over the River's and Feldman bands) I stuck with those four for now.

The others can come later.

And I also picked up Dexter's One Flight Up for a fiver. Even if it is CP

Thanks guys.

Same here.

Don't yet have the box, but this has always been far and away my favorite live recording of this band (that and the Moon release of the other set from the same festival). Great as the other stuff is, there's a quality of "impatience" to it, like they're waiting for something new to happen, but they don't know what it is, do they, Mister Shorter? But at Antibes, they sound fresh, invigorated, organic, and totally in the moment.

I had a strange French edition of this one, thought it had another title, but I'm not sure about it anymore. However, this was the last of the albums in the box, except for Seven Steps which I heard but never owned, and the Tokyo which is new to me. Thus, as I have been loving the Berlin and the Four&More/Funny Valentine discs for years (they were prob. among my first 50 or 100 jazz discs, when I was like 15 or 16), it's hard for me to find the Antibes set "better" - there's just too much fondness in my heart for the others, regardless of how good the rest is... sometimes things are like this.
