porcy62 Posted April 12, 2005 Report Posted April 12, 2005 I found this record, Columbia 44050, never heard about it. Any info? Quote
jazzbo Posted April 12, 2005 Report Posted April 12, 2005 ??? I know that there was a cd "The Shoe's of the Fisherman's Wife are some Jive Ass Slippers" that had items from "Dynasty" and "Ah Um" and some alternate material; nothing that hasn't been out before or since actually. . . . Quote

JSngry Posted April 12, 2005 Report Posted April 12, 2005 A wack compilation best left alone. Get the full albums. Quote
brownie Posted April 12, 2005 Report Posted April 12, 2005 This was originally released as a Columbia LP 'Let My Children Hear Music'. Full title of this 'Fisherman's wife' tune was THE SHOES OF THE FISHERMAN'S WIFE ARE SOME JIVE ASS SLIPPERS. The front cover had a very dark color painting by Ed Lee. Beautiful closeup of Mingus by David Gahr on the back cover! Haven't played this for a long time! Time for a relisten! Quote
JSngry Posted April 12, 2005 Report Posted April 12, 2005 Brownie, the album to which you refer is indeed a stone classic, but the album referenced in the opening post is something else entirely - most (not all!) of MINGUS DYNASTY with the title cut thrown in. It's a compilation that makes no sense whatsoever. Quote
brownie Posted April 12, 2005 Report Posted April 12, 2005 Thanks Jim. I remember seeing that compilation at the time and stayed away from it! Good thing I did, obviously! Quote
EKE BBB Posted April 12, 2005 Report Posted April 12, 2005 brownie: follow the AMG link I posted above. Quote
brownie Posted April 12, 2005 Report Posted April 12, 2005 (edited) I did, thanks! Bet that compilation did not have the four-page inlet that had two more superb photos of Mingus by Garh and two pages of Mingus reminiscing about the music that came with the original vinyl Edited April 12, 2005 by brownie Quote

brownie Posted April 12, 2005 Report Posted April 12, 2005 EKE, I have managed to reorder part of my vinyls these past few weeks so searching for an album is a lot easier... My mind is still in a mess Quote
Clunky Posted April 12, 2005 Report Posted April 12, 2005 ??? I know that there was a cd "The Shoe's of the Fisherman's Wife are some Jive Ass Slippers" that had items from "Dynasty" and "Ah Um" and some alternate material; nothing that hasn't been out before or since actually. . . . I've got this CD and it indeed makes no sense what so ever> It features include some of the unedited Dynasty takes which appeared in complete form on the Mosaic vinyl box and the subsequent CBS 3 CD set of Mingus Columbia material.( Ah-um, Dynasty and out-takes) Whilst I'm all in favour of new material my preference is for the Ah-um session as original released over the extended versions in the 3 CD set. Quote
jazzbo Posted April 12, 2005 Report Posted April 12, 2005 Well, it did introduce unedited material then before it was remastered and available in the three subsequent reissues. . . . So in that sense it did make a contribution (Dynasty had not been released on cd before this, so at some point this was someone's idea of what a Dynasty cd should be . . . . NOT mine!) Quote
brownie Posted April 12, 2005 Report Posted April 12, 2005 "our" Garth? No, David Gahr (edited my previous typo - I DID say my mind was still a mess ) Not ours! This one: http://www.cookephoto.com/davidgahr.html Photo of GAHR taken at the 1964 Newport folk festival. Gahr took some of the best photos of Charles Mingus, Roland Kirk and other jazz musicians.
