Now that Fantasy owns the Concord Jazz catalogue, what's the possibility that future OJC issues will include recordings from Concord's back catalogue.

Here's a start for some Concord recordings that would make great OJCs:

The Richie Kamuca Sessions

The Ed Bickert 5 at Toronto's Bourbon Street

Red & Ross: Red Norvo and Ross Tompkins Live in LA - January 1979

Neil Swainson Quintet: 49th Parallel with Woody Shaw

Martin Taylor: Skye Boat - 1981 trio date

Ross Tompkins, Joe Venuti, Ray Brown, Scott Hamilton and Jake Hanna Live at Concord '77

The Dave McKenna Trio: Plays the Music of harry Warren (Dave's only trio date on Concord)

Just wishful thinking, I know.

I won't hold my breath on this possibility.

I would definitely recommend not holding your breath. The fact that Concord has acquired the Fantasy label, one that's primarily focused on reissues, would seem to make it even less likely that they'd dig into their own vaults and favor us with the release of the recordings you mention. But, for what it's worth, I agree. It would be great to see those titles available again.

Up over and out.

I just had a few promo copies of new Concord compilation CDs show up here in the shop. A few Concord recordings side by side with OJC material. The only one I can find right now is called Jazz Moods- Sounds of Spring.

Didn't someone else forsee a future of nothing but this sort of thing for the OJC stuff? The future has arrived, kids.

Glad I stocked up on OJCs when I did...

One silver lining: perhaps they'll all show up at Barnes And Noble in the $3.99 bin, just like the Concords did. Also, Daedalus has a line on OOP Concords.

Not that this is a good thing: I wish Fantasy had stayed as they were. But it was always just one guy, and he's old enough to retire now.

I wonder how Blue Note will fare once Michael Cuscuna retires?

The Kamucas are definitely worth reissuing. However, based on sjarrell's post it looks like we'll be inundated with "Music to Make Your Stomach Churn" compilations ad infinitum.

There are several ways that Concord could go: limited edition box sets, perhaps even signed by some of the surviving principals (Bud Shank, Scott Hamilton, Hank Jones); or "twofers"; or complete sessions with alternates.

Instead we get bullshit. Don't these marketing whizzes know who buys this stuff?

I suspect not. I wonder if they think that compilations are a kind of compromise: casual fans get their "best of," and the true fanatics at least get something rather than nothing. They don't realize that for most of us, having a compilation is little better than having nothing. We're more likely to already have much of the material, anyway.

I'm not sure that Concord still has the rights to the Richie Kamuca albums. They'd originally been issued on Kamuca's own Jazzzz label and were later leased from Kamuca's estate for release on Concord.

Not long ago I transferred my LP copies to CDR.

I believe this was mentioned elsewhere, but on the Fantasy site they mention in June there will be a new batch of OJC reissues and K2 reissues. I can't find the page in the Fantasy site -- looks like Sonny Rollins will have a powerful new live album coming this September.

Looks like the K2s & OJC issues are delayed until Summer. The purchase by Concord seems to be slowing down issues at Fantasy. I'm not too thrilled.

A little mouse @ Fantasy confirms that things are slowing down.

Japanese Victor (JVC or VICJ) seems to pretty regularly release fantasy and Concord titles. This may be our only recourse eventually as the domestic program withers.
