bluesbro Posted April 5, 2005 Report Posted April 5, 2005 Hi, New at this forum. I searched on the topic but seems like everyone got the box with the complete performances. I cant buy the box, so I have to choose between buying either the Friday or Saturday edition. Which one did you like best and recommend? Thanks Quote
jazzbo Posted April 5, 2005 Report Posted April 5, 2005 The original Saturday lp was the one I had first and for years before I found the Friday. . . . That is why I automatically thought "Saturday!" BUT there's really little to choose from between the two; I would say get either myself. Just as long as you later get the other. Quote
bluesbro Posted April 5, 2005 Author Report Posted April 5, 2005 Thanks. Yeah, that was the other question I had. Is the box really an essential purchase? I have the plugged nickel box and like it very much, cant imagine not having the complete set. But this box doesnt seem to get that much praise in other reviews I have read. Quote
jazzbo Posted April 5, 2005 Report Posted April 5, 2005 Well, you'll probably get differing views on this here. AND there are a few threads on the board under reissues forum I think that will spell those out. For me, it's essential. I really dig any of the Miles sessions or gigs with the Kelly Trio behind him. And I do like Mobley with Miles, though he doesn't offer that vivid contrast that makes the Coltrane and Shorter combinations so pronounced. This is nice also in being two successive nights in a working band's life in a famous jazz club. . . . I couldn't wait to hear the set and was so glad to have it. I'd say I break this one out a little more than some other Miles releases. Quote
jazzbo Posted April 5, 2005 Report Posted April 5, 2005 And welcome! I'll see if I can find one of those threads and bring it up. Quote
Nate Dorward Posted April 5, 2005 Report Posted April 5, 2005 I'm not a huge fan of the box, but others seem to be very fond of it. But if you plump for just one night, get the night with "Bye Bye Blackbird" I think (Friday). Quote
Guy Berger Posted April 5, 2005 Report Posted April 5, 2005 Thanks. Yeah, that was the other question I had. Is the box really an essential purchase? I have the plugged nickel box and like it very much, cant imagine not having the complete set. But this box doesnt seem to get that much praise in other reviews I have read. I think this comes down to how closely you share Lon's feelings about the music. If you love the sound of this group (and they play very well here) then this is essential music. For what it's worth, the "box" replicates the two sets, so you might just want to go for one, see how you like it, and then later on pick up the other. The price differential is small -- in fact, when I picked this music up, buying the 2-CD sets separately was cheaper than the box! Guy Quote
jlhoots Posted April 5, 2005 Report Posted April 5, 2005 I agree with Lon. Eventually you'll want both nights. Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted April 8, 2005 Report Posted April 8, 2005 I'm listening to the box right now. Great set for sure! Highly recommended. Quote
bluesbro Posted April 8, 2005 Author Report Posted April 8, 2005 Well I was able to buy both nights separately for $19 at bmgmusic shipped!! That 60% no s/h coupon came just in time B-) Quote
AllenLowe Posted April 11, 2005 Report Posted April 11, 2005 (edited) well, it depends - if something was recorded on "Friday" night, but after midnight, is it really Saturday morning? Likewise for Saturday night after 12 - is it Sunday morning? So the question would be - do you prefer Friday night, Saturday morning, Saturday night, or Sunday morning - Edited April 11, 2005 by AllenLowe Quote
DMP Posted April 11, 2005 Report Posted April 11, 2005 And don't forget to factor in the time zone difference. Quote
AllenLowe Posted April 26, 2005 Report Posted April 26, 2005 (edited) that's right - now if someone were listening, on the East Coast, on a Sunday morning to something recorded, on the West Coast, on Saturday night, what day would that be considered? And would the record company have to issue two sets of notes and covers? Or how about if someone was in Tokyo (as we know there are many Japanese jazz fans) which is 18 hours ahead of the West Coast - so in Tokyo it is Monday morning, but in California it is Saturday night (and in New York it's Sunday - and don't even ask about Idaho) - and we're not even considering the former Soviet Union, Outer Mongolia, Germany, France, Poland, Alaska, Hawaii - not to mention daylight savings time and Leap Year - Edited April 26, 2005 by AllenLowe Quote
