Brownian Motion Posted April 4, 2005 Report Posted April 4, 2005 (edited) I'm listening to "Wibur deParis Plays Cole Porter" from about 1958. Wilbur's band seemed to enjoy playing these tunes and I enjoy hearing them, both of us liberated for 40 minutes from the usual fare of dixieland warhorses. In particular Doc Cheatham and Sonny White seem to thrive on this more challenging material. Next up on the changer is Wibur Harden's "The King and I", and while none of these songs entered the jazz standard repetoire they give Wilbur a nice showcase for his melodic improvisations and glorious tone. Anyone got favorites? Edited April 4, 2005 by Brownian Motion Quote
Dan Gould Posted April 4, 2005 Report Posted April 4, 2005 I like the Jazztet and John Lewis album, and there are a couple of "Plays Horace Silver" albums that I also dig, but I can't remember right now ... the Mastersounds? Or was that Little Miss Cott? Don't know why I'm blanking, its not like I should mistake one for the other! Quote
Brownian Motion Posted April 4, 2005 Author Report Posted April 4, 2005 I just got Adam Makowicz at Maybeck Recital Hall playing an all Cole Porter program (with the exception of a Makowicz-composed Art Tatum tribute). Nice stuff! Quote

ghost of miles Posted April 4, 2005 Report Posted April 4, 2005 Brownian, I was just spinning that DeParis-Porter CD a couple of weeks ago! I'm probably going to use something off it for the Indiana jazz anthology that I'm working on (both DeParis brothers were from IN, as was Porter). I like the Mastersounds' KING & I and Silver tributes... also like Ran Blake's Silver tribute... um, let's see, Kenny Clarke Plays Hodeir from the Jazz in Paris series, any of the Herbie Nichols Project CDs, the Corea Powell tribute, Braxton's Tristano album, Ira Sullivan's Bird set... those are the ones that come to mind immediately. Oh, and Anita O'Day's TRAVLIN' LIGHT ode to Billie. And the 4-CD INTERPRETATIONS OF MONK... good topic! Quote

Chuck Nessa Posted April 4, 2005 Report Posted April 4, 2005 Lately I've been enjoying the late solo "tributes" by Earl Hines. In addition to the Ellingtons (not my favorites), I've dug programs of Harold Arlen (2 discs), Cole Porter, Louis Armstrong, WC Handy, Hoagy Carmichael and two Gershwin discs. My 2 favorites are the Gershwin program recorded for Carosello (I have both lps on a single Musidisc cd) and the Armstrong tribute. I wish I still had the Dave Dallwitz program on Swaggie. Quote
