Alexander Posted May 26, 2005 Report Posted May 26, 2005 Just for shits and giggles, I decided to see with people like Michael Medved made of "Sin City." There's some really funny stuff at the site: Christians Review Sin City For those who don't feel like scrolling through the whole thing, it seems that many Christian viewers felt that "Sin City" was full of bad things that "good people" shouldn't see...but other than that they seemed to enjoy it a whole hell of a lot! "...From a technical standpoint: it is one of the most visually stunning movies I have ever seen. From a moral standpoint: it's so deep in the gutter, there's absolutely nothing redeeming about it. It's a movie I appreciated, but it's not for everyone. I would only recommend it to mature adult christians who are not easily offended. ...As a comic book fan (in my younger days) I have to agree that this is the most faithful adaptation of a comic ever. It literally brings the Frank Miller series to life...ripping it right out of the graphic novel and pasting it on the screen. Rodriguez is a visual genius. The almost completely black-and-white movie is electrified with the intense splashes of color introduced into blood, lips, eyes, shoes, etc. I was drooling over how beautifully it was shot and rendered. As an idealist, my mind was racing with the thought of a christian filmmaker with this kind of visual talent! It's really unbelievable. And I'm not going to lie and say the 3 stories weren't interesting. Frank Miller is a wonderful comic book writer and artist and he knows how to write a gritty, hard-boiled story." But other than that, it stinks and anyone who sees it will be condemned to hell. It seems that a big part of being a Christian is denying yourself the things you enjoy. "Yeah, it's a kick-ass movie with great acting, striking imagery and superb directing...but Jesus wouldn't want me to see it, so I guess I'll go home and sing hymns." Funny stuff! Quote

Big Al Posted May 26, 2005 Report Posted May 26, 2005 FWIW, I haven't seen the movie yet, only because I just don't get to the movies that much to begin with; waiting for the DVD is much cheaper! But this film, if you guys and my best friend are any indication, is worth shelling out the extra bucks to see it on the big screen. Quote
Soulstation1 Posted August 19, 2005 Report Posted August 19, 2005 anyone pick up the dvd of this flick? i might give this movie one more chance Quote
jazzbo Posted August 19, 2005 Author Report Posted August 19, 2005 I might buy a more expanded version, that is rumored to be available near Xmas. Quote
Guest Chaney Posted August 19, 2005 Report Posted August 19, 2005 Me very bad man. I had no interest in seeing this film. Surfing the 'net, I stumbled across a download of the entire film as supplied by a very naughty person. Being somewhat naughty myself, I figured: what the hell, no way I'd pay to see this crap. Amazingly, it blew me away! I'll be tempted to follow Lon's lead and pick up the expanded version. Quote
Alexander Posted August 19, 2005 Report Posted August 19, 2005 If there's an expanded verison coming out, I'll wait... Quote
RDK Posted August 20, 2005 Report Posted August 20, 2005 If there's an expanded verison coming out, I'll wait... ← I've heard anywhere from November to next Spring. Supposedly telling the three stories seperately, without the crosscutting, and with much more stuff... Quote
kinuta Posted August 23, 2005 Report Posted August 23, 2005 (edited) http://www.kcrw.com/cgi-bin/db/kcrw.pl Click for an interview with Frank Miller. Enter ' Frank Miller' in the search box. Sin City was a great film, one of the best this year. Edited August 23, 2005 by kinuta Quote

Big Al Posted August 28, 2005 Report Posted August 28, 2005 Just finished watching it.... Wow..... Dark.... In-fucking-credible..... Very very dark..... Captivating..... Two hours that literally flew by.... Amazingly dark..... Like nothing I had even remotely expected..... Not nearly as gory as I'd thought it would be, and what there is extremely stylish.... And dark...... and.. WOW!!!! What a picture! What a ride!!!! Quote
patricia Posted August 28, 2005 Report Posted August 28, 2005 I love this film. I think that it's being so faithful to the source is key. There is that singelmindedness that characterizes comic books of this genre. If Mickey Rourke were to wish for a comeback role, he couldn't have been offered a better one than this. All the characters are broadly drawn, which is proper and very effective. One thing I couldn't help noticing was the constant wind, whether indoors or outdoors, typical of comic book artists' renderings. This was intensified by the voluminous coats, always moving. Also, the women's hair was always being blown around, a lot like a shampoo ad. This is a great film, recommended for everyone who wants to see something that is really unique. Quote
Alexander Posted August 28, 2005 Report Posted August 28, 2005 Tried to get my wife to watch it, but she made me turn it off after about twenty minutes (if that). Oh well, to each his (or her) own... Quote

My taste is very eclectic and I like everything from Sci-Fi to Heavy Drama, to Comedies and even a little soft-core porn. This was none of these. As I say. Totally unique. BruceW Posted August 30, 2005 Report Posted August 30, 2005 alan moore will kick frank miller's ass in my mind. captain britian rules. well i went in to "sin city" thinking it would be a movie for people that have cats and read juxtapose magazine so i was aprehensive. not sure if it was or it wasn't since i left so soon...but it just seemed cheesy and i couldn't listen to mickey rourke say "goldie" again and the first story or two weren't even good and yes i have read some of "sin city" and thought it was fine but i like my comics to have robots and lasers and capes. not "hard boiled' crap. ← The one thing I like about these forums, is that so many people try to be intellectually superior to other posters. Question for you???? Why the hell did you go see a Frank Miller movie in the first place if you hate him so badly??? Everybody on this forum knows you cannot judge a movie by a part, but rather the whole. (that is, if you are an intellectual) nothing personal! Quote
Soul Stream Posted August 30, 2005 Report Posted August 30, 2005 I rented this last week and couldn't watch but about 30 minutes of it. TOO violent. I just can't watch that sort of stomach turning violence. A rush to some, but I go into a..."why do we live in such a violence-glorifying world"-mode and get depressed. Quote

Very violent, yes, but it was so surreal (impressionistic) it didn't really affect me all that much. It was a stunning visual experience- an exciting roller-coaster ride of a film- I would see it a second time, though I don't feel a need to own it (i.e. see it again and again). I loved Mickey Rourke's character- total fantasy, almost like the F4's Thing. I would compare it to the Kill Bill films, which I also enjoyed. Violent escapism. Yes, we're definitely getting desensitized to violence. Quote
Soul Stream Posted August 30, 2005 Report Posted August 30, 2005 Sad thing was I really WANTED to watch this, like this, ect. I knew it was going to be violent, ect., just wasn't really ready for what I saw. Perhaps I could try again, but the experience took the wind out of my sails. What really disturbs me is this is the same guy that brings us Spy Kids. Quote

JSngry Posted October 2, 2005 Report Posted October 2, 2005 LTB did PPV on this this morning, and I came along for the ride. As a dark comedy, it was great. Like "Pulp Fiction" in any number of ways. As anything else, well, if I wanted to explore the depths of depravity to which humanity can sink, hell, I can review much of my own life, and those of many around me. Only, there was more really great female asses in the movie, and I only know one, two, maybe three non-professional guys who've killed anybody on purpose and gotten away with it. But hey - you've seen one or two really great asses up close and personal, and known a few killers on the lam, you pretty much get the idea. Not a lot of real variety there after a while. Don't know that I've known any pedophillic serial killers before, but oh well, some things just don't come your way. I'll live... But the movie sure looked great. Quote
