B. Goren. Posted April 2, 2005 Report Posted April 2, 2005 Booker Little could have been 67 today. He could have made an amazing career but he died too early as a result of uremia. What is your favorite recording of BL? I like everything he recorded but I have a special weakness to his recordings with Max Roach and to *Booker Little and Friend*. This evening I'll listen to it. sidewinder Posted April 2, 2005 Report Posted April 2, 2005 I like pretty well everything that he did but for me pride of place has to go to the Candid 'Out Front' and the 'Time' quartet (re-issued on Island as 'The Legendary Quartet Album'). Those two are desert island recordings, IMO. I think Booker was right on the cusp of greatness at the time he tragically passed on. His achievements have been asimilated to an extent (Kenny Wheeler comes to mind) but really not given the credit they deserve. Quote
brownie Posted April 2, 2005 Report Posted April 2, 2005 Preferred Booker Little contribution remains the sides with Eric Dolphy. The Dolphy at the Five Spot volumes are on my Desert Island discs list! Quote
Brownian Motion Posted April 2, 2005 Report Posted April 2, 2005 Of all the jazz trumpet players who died young, only Booker, IMO, was poised to change the course of jazz itself. We've missed out on much more than 45 years of great trumpet playing. Quote
kh1958 Posted April 2, 2005 Report Posted April 2, 2005 The Bethleham and Candid Out Front are the ones that I prefer and have listened to countless times. Every song on both is a gem. Quote
king ubu Posted April 3, 2005 Report Posted April 3, 2005 Preferred Booker Little contribution remains the sides with Eric Dolphy. The Dolphy at the Five Spot volumes are on my Desert Island discs list! same here (though I like the Bethlehem and Candid's a lot, too). Quote
sidewinder Posted April 3, 2005 Report Posted April 3, 2005 I'm also pretty partial to his work with Max Roach, particularly in tandem with George Coleman and Ray Draper on 'Deeds Not Words'. Quote
Alexander Hawkins Posted April 3, 2005 Report Posted April 3, 2005 'Man of Words' from 'Out Front' is beautiful - really haunting. The scoring for Dolphy's bass clarinet is wonderful here. Quote
Free For All Posted April 3, 2005 Report Posted April 3, 2005 This one is a favorite Booker appearance for sure. Woody Shaw seems to have been influenced to no small degree by Booker Little. BL's angular lines and unique harmonic approach are very much in evidence in Woody's playing. Quote
Vincent, Paris Posted April 9, 2005 Report Posted April 9, 2005 There a short video clip online showing Booker Little playing "Love for Sale" with the Max Roach 5. Did the complete session ever come out on DVD ? Quote
