Free For All Posted April 1, 2005 Report Posted April 1, 2005 i can't afford to pay h & r block $125 a year That's not bad at all, really. Ours was a lot more, but we have some complicated biz w/our taxes. Our tax guy is really good too, and keeps us out of trouble. I'm happy to pay someone else to do it. I hate doing taxes. Quote
Soulstation1 Posted April 1, 2005 Author Report Posted April 1, 2005 (edited) i prefer to have someone prepare mine, but i simply can not afford it this year i still owe taxes from 2003 Edited April 1, 2005 by Soulstation1 Quote
GA Russell Posted April 1, 2005 Report Posted April 1, 2005 I used Turbo Tax, and got a prompt refund. Unfortunately, I had owed taxes from a previous year, so my refund was small. Quote
Soulstation1 Posted April 1, 2005 Author Report Posted April 1, 2005 (edited) 3/4 years ago i bought T/T and PAID for ALL the "FREE" software and crap couldn't figure out T/T, didn't mail my rebates in time and lost my $$$$ on that deal PLUS i had to go back to HRB and paying them suckers $125 i just took a peek the quicken basic 2001 still is unopened..... so now i mail all my rebates the very next day Edited April 1, 2005 by Soulstation1 Quote
jazzmessenger Posted April 1, 2005 Report Posted April 1, 2005 You really don't need to pay for tax software unless you want to. I have never bought one myself. You can file your tax for free, using one of websites (incluidng TurboTax) available through the IRS website. The key is that you have to go to the software sites from the IRS website. Quote
SEK Posted April 2, 2005 Report Posted April 2, 2005 I just finished filling in the forms this afternoon. Signatures go on tomorrow. Then they're in the mail. The lack of deductions and my wife's retirement planning have made the completion of the forms significantly simpler. I also like those PDF files that you can fill in on the computer. The completed Federal forms can even be saved. I, more than ever, dislike where the money does and does not go. But that's a subject for the political forum. Quote
chris olivarez Posted April 2, 2005 Report Posted April 2, 2005 Mine are done. I have a CPA do mine and it's not as costly as Block. While I know I should do my own it just makes me feel better doing it this way. Quote
ejp626 Posted April 2, 2005 Report Posted April 2, 2005 My taxes are so fucking complicated. Last year I filed Schedule A, B, D, E, and a couple other forms I didn't even know about 4562, 8582, etc. It will be the same this year. I'm about half done tonight. I actually do them myself, but mostly because I would be too embarassed to show up with a couple dozen crumpled receipts to hand over to the CPA (but with rental property that's really the only way you know what you spent on repairs over the year). Add to that New York State is still trying to audit me from 2002, even though I reported all my capital gains to them already as an in-state resident. It really burns me up. I got a pleasant surprise last year where the IRS decided I paid too much and sent me a big check. I think they figured I was a Bush supporter and came up with some weird tax credit or recharacterized my income, cause according to the printed rules I was right on the money. Quote
Soulstation1 Posted April 12, 2005 Author Report Posted April 12, 2005 looks like i might have to go the HRB route i went to the "free" help today and they couldn't figure my shit out THE IRS CAN KISS MY BUTT Quote
ejp626 Posted April 12, 2005 Report Posted April 12, 2005 Finally done! I mailed them off today. What a mess. I was almost done when I realized I had missed some credits. They actually owe me money, which is nice, but I am putting it towards estimated taxes for 2005. Quote
rostasi Posted April 12, 2005 Report Posted April 12, 2005 Finished it in January - got the refund (about $1500) - and making spending plans now! Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted April 12, 2005 Report Posted April 12, 2005 Finished (with TurboTax) a couple weeks ago - owe the IRS $2000 and get back $500 from the state. State refund arrived in a week and goes toward the fed bill. Quote
Ron S Posted April 12, 2005 Report Posted April 12, 2005 State refund arrived in a week In Pennsylvania we're lucky to get a refund within a month or two of filing. Quote
