BruceH Posted July 24, 2011 Report Posted July 24, 2011 (edited) Breaking Bad, new season episode 1. Very impressive, almost Tarantino like opener. I'll be very interested to see where this goes. Me too. (Perhaps ending the episode in a Denny's was an actual nod to Tarantino, though I don't really care either way.) Edited July 24, 2011 by BruceH Quote
kinuta Posted July 25, 2011 Report Posted July 25, 2011 This week's Breaking Bad & Curb Your Enthusiasm. I'd like to get the recipe for the Palestinian chicken. Quote
jazzbo Posted July 26, 2011 Report Posted July 26, 2011 Curb Your Enthusiasm Season 6 (on tv rebroadcast, been taping them nightly and watching them three or four episodes at a time.) Quote
Free For All Posted August 13, 2011 Report Posted August 13, 2011 Have to say this series has really grown on me. I'm looking forward to watching Season 2. Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted August 31, 2011 Report Posted August 31, 2011 Started watching series 2 when it was serialised on TV. For some reason my recorder missed episode 7 and the DVD does not come out until late Sept so I've been hiring series 1. Up to episode 8. A wonderful supplement to the books. The relationship between Wallander and his daughter is marvellously portrayed in these programmes. All the more poignant knowing that sometime later the actress who plays Linda committed suicide. I enjoyed the other Swedish series (based on the books), didn't care for the couple of UK versions I saw. But this series is very special. And like in the books, Ystad is a character in itself. Makes me want to visit again. Quote

Makes me want to visit again. I liked the Swedish series very much and found the British one unsatisfying and misjudged, Kenneth Branagh's emotional histrionics were all wrong. Krister Henriksson nailed the character in the way that John Thaw did with Morse, Branagh seemed like an imposter. I agree also with the fine portrayal of the father daughter relationship, it was real and believable. Glad you are enjoying it. Quote
jazzbo Posted September 1, 2011 Report Posted September 1, 2011 I'm watching Nash Bridges, Season 3 (silly fun show) and am about to start last season of Sons of Anarchy on Blu-Ray. Quote
kinuta Posted September 1, 2011 Report Posted September 1, 2011 Some ancient copies of Dad's Army. My link Quote

The plots are pretty standard 'crime amongst the bourgeoisie' plots like Morse or Lewis. Where this series (like Morse) goes to another level is in the characterisations and the really wonderful sense of place. Yes, Krister Henriksson is absolutely superb. [Having said that the plots are fairly standard, I was on the edge of my seat in the episode where first Martinsson and then Wallander's daughter get kidnapped by the chap who infiltrates all their surveillance equipment]. kinuta Posted September 3, 2011 Report Posted September 3, 2011 This week's Damages. Patty was in dazzling form, it's turned into a real battle against evil. Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted September 3, 2011 Report Posted September 3, 2011 "The Hour" Up to episode 4/6. Set around the time of Suez/Hungary (1956) a tale of espionage in the early days of BBC TV as the idea of TV reportage is being created. Some great performances. Has been lazily described as the 'British Madmen' but apart from the roughly similar period and the screen filled with cigarette smoke it's very different. Quote
kinuta Posted September 3, 2011 Report Posted September 3, 2011 Hattie BBC A sad story, I never knew anything about this at the time. How she could have thrown away a family for an utter slimeball is beyond me. Quote
paul secor Posted September 5, 2011 Report Posted September 5, 2011 Watched the first episode of the new Inspector Lewis Series 5 last night. The interaction between Lewis and Hathaway is still there, but the writer(s) are really stretching things with some of the murders. Quote
jazzbo Posted September 5, 2011 Report Posted September 5, 2011 Watching Ancient Aliens, Season One on Blu-Ray. I find the theories entertaining, if not dispelling all doubt. Still I love to watch the many sequences featuring ancient monumental architecture and artifacts, in high definition. Fascinating. Quote
kinuta Posted September 6, 2011 Report Posted September 6, 2011 This week's Breaking Bad and Curb Your Enthusiasm. Quote
jazzbo Posted September 7, 2011 Report Posted September 7, 2011 Been catching up on "Raising Hope." Sometimes that show is ridiculously funny. Quote
BruceH Posted September 7, 2011 Report Posted September 7, 2011 This week's Breaking Bad and Curb Your Enthusiasm. This week's Breaking Bad was particularly good I thought. Quote
kinuta Posted September 8, 2011 Report Posted September 8, 2011 (edited) Rewatched Luther Season 2 I like the idea of keeping the season short and intense, a nice contrast to some of the interminable "We must have 22 episodes" American fare. Yes, this week's Breaking Bad was intense too. Edited September 8, 2011 by kinuta Quote
jazzbo Posted September 11, 2011 Report Posted September 11, 2011 Audra McDonald singing a few Ellington tunes on Great Performances, and now An American In Paris on the same program from Carnegie Hall. Quote
ValerieB Posted September 11, 2011 Report Posted September 11, 2011 streaming the Piano Competition from the Monk Institute's website. it's fantastic! Quote
jazzbo Posted September 12, 2011 Report Posted September 12, 2011 Started watching HawthoRNe on TNT this year, enjoyed it and decided to go back to the beginning. So I'm watching Season One on DVD (damned good looking DVD too). Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted September 12, 2011 Report Posted September 12, 2011 'The Hour' - last two episodes. The final one was brilliant. One of those ordinary-folks-getting-one-up-on-those-who-take-it-as-read-that-they-have-a-right-to-power-and-influence moments. And a genuinely surprising twist in the tail. I believe a second series has got the green light. Quote
kinuta Posted September 13, 2011 Report Posted September 13, 2011 Appropriate Adult ITV Dominic West, fresh from The Hour, plays Fred West very chillingly in his matter of fact manner. Emily Watson excellent as the naive soul caught in a web of real evil. I thought this was quite impressive, the kind of thing you'd still be thinking about days later. Quote
