jazzbo Posted December 31, 2010 Report Posted December 31, 2010 (edited) I finished watching Caprica Season 1.0 and have started on Season 1.5. First off, the dvd sets are a rip-off. . . they're priced almost as if they were each a full season, but they're only a half season each. I was hoping for Blu-Ray releases but I confess that the upscaled dvd image is excellent and the sound is very good. But despite the overpricing. . . I loved this show. So sorry it's been canceled. Battlestar Galactica fans seem disappointed that it wasn't Battlestar Galactica. I'm glad that it took a very different path. I think that their treatment of the possibility of a "virtual world" part internet and part virtual reality was masterful. Following three likely paths for this virtual world may be confusing to many but intrigued me. One path the world took was a hedonistic playground for all vices fuled by young hormones. Another was the proposed use of the virtual world as a "heavenly place" as reward for religious service. And the third proposed use is as a way to create versions of lost loved ones and allow a mourner to interact with a near identical departed loved one. The subtle exploration of the moral and social ramifications of all these intrigue me. I also found the portrayal of terrorists in this series to be fascinating. I know one viewer who was upset that the show seemed to be portraying Christians as terrorists. That shows to me that the writer's intent was realized. Fascinating show that I recommend to science fiction and tv drama enthusiasts. Edited December 31, 2010 by jazzbo Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted January 1, 2011 Report Posted January 1, 2011 Over the last week - three episodes of a Swedish version of Wallendar (not the famous series which I've yet to see - there's an episode tonight). Enjoyed them very much. Last night: Passed the time, but tried to cover too much ground in too short a time. I can cope with historical inaccuracy for dramatic ends (if it's OK for Shakespeare...) but the scenes where Sir Walter Raleigh beat the Spanish Armada singlehanded were straight out of Errol Flynn. And the misty mountain lochside scenes of Mary Queen of Scot's detention centre at Fotheringay castle were amusing. Fotheringay is in Northamptonshire which is flat and one of the dullest counties in England! Clive Owen was hopeless as Raleigh; I seem to recall him being similarly unimpressive in the blockbuster about King Arthur. Quote
Van Basten II Posted January 1, 2011 Report Posted January 1, 2011 Mad Men season 1 episode 9 and 10 , yeah I know I'm late Quote
Van Basten II Posted January 3, 2011 Report Posted January 3, 2011 You're late? Dexter, season 1. Finished the season one of Mad Men, you're in advance for Dexter, have not watched any episodes yet, will resume during my last days off watching Boadwalk Empire, at least I will be up to date for once. jazzbo Posted January 3, 2011 Report Posted January 3, 2011 Two more episodes to go of Caprica. This series is a slow builder (sort of like, but different from, Rubicon), but it pays off. This series fascinates me. I'll be watching it again. Wish it could have had another season. Quote
Van Basten II Posted January 3, 2011 Report Posted January 3, 2011 Boardwalk Empire episodes 3 and 4 Quote
jazzbo Posted January 8, 2011 Report Posted January 8, 2011 Short and short-lived series. Very Fox TV but not too bad. I enjoy watching Juliana. Quote

Matthew Posted January 10, 2011 Report Posted January 10, 2011 The Big Bang Theory: Season three. Not as good as the other two seasons to my mind. Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted January 10, 2011 Report Posted January 10, 2011 'Zen' New BBC series based on the Michael Dibdin novels. Nicely done if a bit hurried. Very 60s Martini advert feel, nice shots of Italy. Quote
jazzbo Posted January 10, 2011 Report Posted January 10, 2011 I'm watching that same leading man in the STARZ network mini-series of Follett's "Pillars of the Earth." 'S Alright. Quote
paul secor Posted January 17, 2011 Report Posted January 17, 2011 Watched a documentary on the relationship between Vlade Divac and Drazen Petrovic on ESPN this afternoon. It touched on friendship, broken friendship, politics, war .... One of the most moving sports related films I've ever seen. Quote
Matthew Posted January 17, 2011 Report Posted January 17, 2011 Watched a documentary on the relationship between Vlade Divac and Drazen Petrovic on ESPN this afternoon. It touched on friendship, broken friendship, politics, war .... One of the most moving sports related films I've ever seen. There are some great documentaries on the 30 on 30 series, The Two Pablos was great also, as well as the ones on SMU and the Marcus Dupree one. Some not so good ones in there also. I'm tempted to get the box set of the first fifteen that's out now. Quote
jazzbo Posted January 17, 2011 Report Posted January 17, 2011 Watched last night's SNL. A few good skits. Quote
kinuta Posted January 19, 2011 Report Posted January 19, 2011 The Good Wife Consistently interesting,my clear favourite among the currently running shows. Quote
jazzbo Posted January 20, 2011 Report Posted January 20, 2011 I agree; I watched that very early this morning. Been a good series of episodes the last three or so. And it's heating up a few more degrees. I started re-watching this series, a favorite. Quote
paul secor Posted January 21, 2011 Report Posted January 21, 2011 Inspector Lewis: Allegory of Love on my local PBS station. Kevin Whately and Laurence Fox have helped to make up for the loss of John Thaw and the Inspector Morse series. Quote

Matthew Posted January 23, 2011 Report Posted January 23, 2011 The Lawrence Welk Show. Yeah, I know, but I enjoy it. Quote
jazzbo Posted January 23, 2011 Report Posted January 23, 2011 I enjoy watching Welk on PBS every now and then as well. My Mom's parents would have that show on and my Grandma Dorothy would even dance with us sometimes. It seems almost as if it's a memory from another planet. A happy planet.I'm watching today's episode of "The Naked Archaeologist." Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted January 23, 2011 Report Posted January 23, 2011 (edited) First two parts (/10) of a superb Danish detective/political mystery, 'The Killing', shown on BBC 4 last night: Wonderful, brooding atmosphere and nice and slow moving. Add subtitles into the equation and I'm not surprised to read: In the USA, rather than show the original, Fox Television Studios is choosing to remake it for the AMC cable network and that is due to be broadcast some time in 2011. It had a successful pilot in 2010. With Bruce Willis and J Lo, no doubt. Pathetic. http://www.suite101.com/content/the-killing-danish-crime-drama-comes-to-bbc-four-a335346 BBC4 seems to have struck gold bringing in these crime dramas from mainland Europe, probably playing off the appetite for Scandinavian crime novels here. Hope they continue it. Inspector Lewis: Allegory of Love on my local PBS station. Kevin Whately and Laurence Fox have helped to make up for the loss of John Thaw and the Inspector Morse series. Just finished going through all of those on rented DVD. One or two creaked (the one about the ageing hippies reuniting a rock band was very silly) - but overall I really enjoyed them. And, as you say, the Whately/Fox relationship, really does work. Edited January 23, 2011 by A Lark Ascending Quote
sidewinder Posted January 23, 2011 Report Posted January 23, 2011 (edited) The Lawrence Welk Show. Yeah, I know, but I enjoy it. Some of the old shows I saw in North America had ex-Rich trumpet lead Lyn Biviano featured. So well worth checking out ! Edited January 23, 2011 by sidewinder Quote
