Who will drive the stake through Cersei? I can't imagine the show concluding with her still on the Iron Throne. I was also a late convert. When I finally started watching it turned into an epic binge. I have a feeling that she will hang on: evil always triumphs. Quote

It's amazing how Euron gets a direct hit on first trial with the giant arrow thing and was able to reload and do it again while in motion. It's obvious they're trying to cram a lot into just a couple of more episodes. Cersei (and Euron) has to go, right? I don't dare speculate who takes the thrown in the end but I'm pulling for Jon. No doubt the battle of the Clegane brothers is coming. How about the Starbucks cup mishap? e. Quote
kinuta Posted May 18, 2019 Report Posted May 18, 2019 Catch 22 Four episodes in, two to go. Solid but unremarkable. Quote

Brad Posted May 21, 2019 Report Posted May 21, 2019 It wasn’t very good. Here’s a funny article from Esquire. 56 Questions We Need Answered After the Game of Thrones Finale Quote
kinuta Posted May 21, 2019 Report Posted May 21, 2019 (edited) It felt very rushed and unsatisfactory. Dany's 'descent into madness' was terribly badly done and deserved a season to fully flesh out such a major plot development. The murder and melting of the throne were a damp squid when they should have been a great Shakespearean climax. Wouldn't the Unsullied have promptly torn Jon limb from limb in bloody vengeance? The meeting to decide the new boss was unconvincing. The choice of new boss was awful. The scene made a fair case for making him king but it felt very weak and had zero emotional resonance. The series of vignettes at the end were pat, too neat and anticlimatic. 'Nuff said. Episode three Has anyone been watching this amazing mini series ? Hyper realistic reconstruction of the events and wider snapshot of late Soviet Union. It's superb, immersive and wonderfully acted. Highly recommended. Edited May 21, 2019 by kinuta Quote
Guy Berger Posted May 22, 2019 Report Posted May 22, 2019 I don't think it was only, or even primarily, a "descent to madness" - it was actually a conscious strategic choice to rule by fear, to strike fear into her enemies and possible rivals by showing she was willing to use extreme means. catesta Posted May 22, 2019 Report Posted May 22, 2019 I won't go so far as to say the final GOT season was a complete disaster but looking back on it and especially the final episode, it most definitely felt rushed and was a bit sloppy. I agree with the point that taking Jon prisoner after killing their Queen seemed ridiculous, considering Grey Worm was slitting prisoner throats a few hours before for just fighting for the other side. Who the hell summoned the Lords and Ladies? Grey Worm had those kinds of connections? And yeah, how did they rebuild that ice wall so fast and why they hell do they even need it now? And..... Quote
Brad Posted May 22, 2019 Report Posted May 22, 2019 How about they’re rebuilding Kings Landing do fast: looked pretty good in the last few scenes. Quote
Brad Posted May 22, 2019 Report Posted May 22, 2019 (edited) Part of the problem is that the show had outrun the books. Martin has been working on the next to last book in the series for 8 years (Robert Caro territory); he has been involved in other projects which have probably contributed to the delay. However, he implied on his website today that it should be out in 2020. He won’t start on the last one until he’s done with this one, which makes sense. Edited May 22, 2019 by Brad Quote

catesta Posted May 23, 2019 Report Posted May 23, 2019 I'm nearing a complete re-watch of Mad Men with just a few episodes of Season 7 left. Quote

I rewatched the entire series ( in Blu Ray) earlier this year too. It was richly rewarding. Years And Years BBC episode two Still not sure what to make of this. It has some interesting takes on the near future, with Emma Thompson as a wannabe Trump, which are diluted by a rather bewildering kitchen sink type family drama. My main impression was that, if this is reflective of the current lay of the land, I am very out of tune with popular culture trends in UK. Quote

I always thought it would have been cool if they went a little deeper into the 70s. Nonetheless, it's still a great show with some very clever lines and spots of humor. I think it's an interesting attempt to address some important ideas but within an accessible family drama. It fails when it does mostly because the issues are too foregrounded. The Thompson character is very disconcertingly reflective of today's reality of Farage, Robinson and co. I think the character is less Trump and more identifiable as in an English nationalist\fascist tradition of Mosley et al Quote
ghost of miles Posted May 25, 2019 Report Posted May 25, 2019 Went to see a 3-D presentation of Peter Jackson’s WW1 documentary They Shall Not Grow Old last night at the IU Cinema, followed by a brief feature about how the film was made. Quite an amazing thing to see it in that fashion, as historical documentaries go. Quote

I thought Peter Jackson’s talk after the movie was over was almost as interesting as the movie. Btw, it’s now available on Amazon and other platforms. Quote

kinuta Posted May 27, 2019 Report Posted May 27, 2019 They Shall Not Grow Old is excellent. Summer Of Rockets BBC Very good cast, everything looks great on paper, it even has Timothy Spall. Unfortunately the end result is a total mess, teetering on the edge of dire. Quote
Brad Posted May 27, 2019 Report Posted May 27, 2019 (edited) This is an amazing look at what it took to put the show together, something most of us don't think about, unless you're in the business. Edited May 27, 2019 by Brad Quote
