jazzbo Posted March 19, 2015 Report Posted March 19, 2015 I've watched all the episodes up to the finale, will probably watch that tonight with my fiancee after our Thursday night dinner together. Way over the top but that's part of its charm. I'm a big fan of Ms Henson and she gets to go off like a bomb in this series. My biggest complaint is the Lyon as murderer bit, it's unnecessary, he's already a horrible monster. Surprisingly, I really enjoy the music (was just as surprised at how much I enjoy the music on ABC's Nashville). Just about to watch last nights The Americans. Quote
erwbol Posted March 19, 2015 Report Posted March 19, 2015 Empire. Anybody else here watching the most talked about show on TV? Never even heard of it, homie. Just about to watch last nights The Americans. I'm about to watch this week's Justified and Americans myself. Quote
jazzbo Posted March 19, 2015 Report Posted March 19, 2015 My brother keeps wanting to get me into Justified. . . I'm just not a big Oliphant fan and have avoided it. The Americans was another good episode. Quote
erwbol Posted March 19, 2015 Report Posted March 19, 2015 You'd have to appreciate Oliphant to get hooked on Justified. Seasons 1 through 4 were excellent, as is 6. Five was miserable and is best skipped in favour of a wikipedia synopsis and a few pre-episode recaps at the start of season 6. Quote
erwbol Posted March 19, 2015 Report Posted March 19, 2015 Right. There are so many good shows, why bother if you're not excited to begin with. Quote
jlhoots Posted March 19, 2015 Report Posted March 19, 2015 Broadchurch - season 2 Hoping that The Fall (season 2) & Line Of Duty (season 3) will come out on US compatible DVDs. Been waiting "forever" for season 2 of the French version of The Returned. Still in production I guess. FWIW, I really like Justified, but I liked Deadwood too. OTOH, Game Of Thrones doesn't do it for me. So to each his own. Quote
erwbol Posted March 19, 2015 Report Posted March 19, 2015 OTOH, Game Of Thrones doesn't do it for me. So to each his own. IMO, the books are also tripe, even the first three. Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted March 19, 2015 Report Posted March 19, 2015 (edited) Hoping that The Fall (season 2) & Line Of Duty (season 3) will come out on US compatible DVDs. Been waiting "forever" for season 2 of the French version of The Returned. Still in production I guess. As far as I know there have only been two Line of Duty series. Though 2 more have been commissioned. If you want a really great French police thriller seek out 'Spiral' (Enrages), It's not done 5 superb series, each one multi-layered, gripping and filled with unusual and attractive characters. You also get to visit the parts of Paris that you'd never dream of visiting on your own. Edited March 19, 2015 by A Lark Ascending Quote
Shawn Posted March 19, 2015 Report Posted March 19, 2015 Needed a break from anything remotely serious so I'm watching 30 Rock. Quote

Yeah, Empire is one wildly entertaining show, a sort of King Lear for the Hip Hop generation! Also watching one of my favourite shows of recent years on DVD, The Good Wife season 4. Quote

Oliphant didn't do much for me but there were so many other great performances. I like Game of Thrones on Blu-ray . . . entertaining, I don't take it too seriously. Quote

Engrenages (downward spiral), not Enragés (enraged) I mostly enjoy the slow moving Maigret and Nestor Burma but I have stopped watching any French police thrillers since the dreadful Navarro, Julie Lescaut or Commissaire Moulin series. A Lark Ascending Posted March 20, 2015 Report Posted March 20, 2015 Well, I only just passed my Fench 'O' Level. I once ordered a rabbit of coffee in the East Berlin radio tower - kaninchen rather than kanchen (guessed those spellings too). Quote
kinuta Posted March 26, 2015 Report Posted March 26, 2015 The Americans Superb performance by Lois Smith. Whatever sympathy there might have been for the two is being ripped away week by week as the show enters new and disturbing territory. Kind of reminds me of Walter White. Quote

A Lark Ascending Posted April 2, 2015 Report Posted April 2, 2015 Coalition - a Channel 4 Drama-Doc about the events leading to the formation of the 2010 UK Coalition government. Discovered a few days later that it was written by an ex-student from where I work. Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted April 3, 2015 Report Posted April 3, 2015 The format was stilted - a bit like watching a repertory band rehearsing it's standards. Except that the 'minor' players seemed to provide the excitement. Quote
kinuta Posted April 5, 2015 Report Posted April 5, 2015 This week's episode of Elementary. I've watched the show since the beginning and it has steadily grown on me, I like the subdued mood. The stories are up to par without any flash and histrionics, quite often finishing in a minor key, which makes a nice change from the in your face tone commonly found. Quote
jazzbo Posted April 5, 2015 Report Posted April 5, 2015 This week's episode is on my list to watch today or tomorrow. I like the show a lot, like you I've been in it since the beginning and like the way it has unfolded. Both leads are doing good work imo. Quote
kinuta Posted April 7, 2015 Report Posted April 7, 2015 The Great War - BBC (1964) Rewatching this landmark 26 episode documentary at an episode per day. The definitive film record of WW1, it's power hasn't diminished after fifty years. None of the recent tv programmes on the event can begin to compare. Quote
jazzbo Posted April 7, 2015 Report Posted April 7, 2015 The season finale of Better Call Saul. This show surprised me being different than I anticipated, and excellent. Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted April 7, 2015 Report Posted April 7, 2015 The Great War - BBC (1964) Rewatching this landmark 26 episode documentary at an episode per day. The definitive film record of WW1, it's power hasn't diminished after fifty years. None of the recent tv programmes on the event can begin to compare. I remember watching that in the late-70s when it was screened on the BBC for the first time since the 60s. I found it overwhelming. It was just as I started teaching and very much coloured the way I taught WWI at the time. It's interesting to read about what influenced it and how it influenced. It's now seen as very much a reflection of the anti-establishment/anti-military-industrial complex mood of the 60s (along with 'Oh What a Lovely War' and the rediscovered [and selectively chosen] war poets). Gary Sheffield's 'Forgotten Victory' has an interesting section on its place in the general historiography of the Great War. Quote
duaneiac Posted April 7, 2015 Report Posted April 7, 2015 (edited) I found the DVD set of Season 1 at the library so I checked it out. I was only mildly interested in the show, being as I live in the geographic Silicon Valley but am not a part of the actual "Silicon Valley" world. It's a pretty lame series. I think I laughed once in the very last episode, otherwise it's a show about very unlikable guys behaving badly. And maybe in the days of sitcoms past one could get away with having the characters engage in some outlandish act with no repercussions the following week, but not in this day and age. In one episode an adult male character picks up a young Latino boy at a gas station and brings him back home under the impression that the boy is a reincarnated version of his younger self (you see, he was on hallucinogenic drugs at the time, so it's funny). Nope, sorry, you can't put that in the script and then just ignore it like it never happened in subsequent episodes. In real life that character would be arrested and facing a lengthy jail term. In another episode the police happen to find a large marijuana grow in the garage of the same character's home. Again, you can't put that in the story and act like it never happened the following week. And of course there is the hackneyed storyline of a super hot successful woman falling in love with a socially awkward and unattractive male. I think I will pass on future seasons of this.
