A Lark Ascending Posted July 11, 2014 Report Posted July 11, 2014 (edited) Episode two of The Honourable Woman. I'm not sure I know what is going on but I'm hooked (reminds me of those puzzling series of yesteryear like GBH and The Singing Detective (without the singing or surrealism)). xybert Posted July 14, 2014 Report Posted July 14, 2014 Season 2 of The Bridge starts tonight. I'll be watching. I started the first episode but realized I couldn't make much sense of it without going back and watching the end of season one. Anyone watching without having seen the first season will be quickly lost methinks, it offers zero catch up assistance to new viewers. Found this a bit dull. The central story-line was a bit thin, padded out by joining the dots on as many key civil rights events as they could get the main characters involved in. I wish they'd put the 90s series 'I'll Fly Away' on DVD. Now that series had real depth. I avoided this, it looked like something as manipulative as Forrest Gump. No thanks. Forrest Gump was better. That's for sure but I'm in the embarrassed minority who actually liked FG. I was surprised to find out how disliked Forrest Gump is (online, at least). People really hate it! I mean, every movie has it's detractors, but considering that i always thought it was a universally loved classic it was initially quite jarring how often it gets brought up as an example of a straight up bad movie. A Lark Ascending Posted July 15, 2014 Report Posted July 15, 2014 (edited) BBC2 TV doc: "The Men Who Made Us Spend" Part 1 Hardly news, but chilling - a history of 20thC consumerism and the techniques used by business to ensure goods have short lives so we buy and buy again. Didn't know about the early 20thC light bulb cartel who artificially reduced the life of bulbs by well over half. If you've ever wondered why you've bought 5 different versions of 'King of Blue' or why you've convinced yourself that you need ten Beethoven cycles then the answer is here. Episode 1: 'Red Bones' Standard British whodunnit but, as with so many of these series, made enjoyable by distinctive landscapes and endearing characters. "Midsomer Murders" with atrocious weather (and ferries). Edited July 15, 2014 by A Lark Ascending Quote
Matthew Posted July 20, 2014 Report Posted July 20, 2014 Friends: Season 2. "You partied with Hootie and the Blowfish?!?!?!?!?" Has there ever been a more white, middle-class show than Friends? Quote
erwbol Posted July 21, 2014 Report Posted July 21, 2014 (edited) I don't get this joke, and, fortunately, I never saw a whole episode of Friends. American comedies can be torture, and being force-fed Friends should be considered a crime against humanity. Edited July 21, 2014 by erwbol Quote

American comedies can be torture, and being force-fed Friends should be considered a crime against humanity. I remember visiting my brother and his family in UK . They watched this programme and their non stop chuckles and guffaws left me quite bewildered. They couldn't understand why we sat there stony faced. Talk about reverse culture shock. That's my take on ' Friends'. Edited July 21, 2014 by kinuta Quote
kinuta Posted July 21, 2014 Report Posted July 21, 2014 The Strain Total crap but done with enough style to keep me watching for now. The kid in the bath scene was a WTF rating of 10. Quote
alankin Posted July 21, 2014 Report Posted July 21, 2014 I could never manage to watch an entire episode. Quote

"Has there ever been a more white, middle-class show than Friends?" Well, not if you don't count Leave It To Beaver, The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, Our Miss Brooks, The Andy Griffith Show, The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Patty Duke Show, Family Affair, The Brady Bunch, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Bob Newhart Show, Happy Days, etc. Quote
xybert Posted July 21, 2014 Report Posted July 21, 2014 ... not to mention Family Ties, Growing Pains, Full House, Boy Meets World, Save By the Bell, Home Improvement, that one with Jessica Biel (Seventh Heaven?) etc... based on TV shows, i always wondered if it was the norm for kids in the USA to have these massive bedrooms, literally packed with wall to wall posters, toys, computers, musical instruments, sound systems etc... Shawn Posted July 22, 2014 Report Posted July 22, 2014 (edited) The Strain Total crap but done with enough style to keep me watching for now. The kid in the bath scene was a WTF rating of 10. Is it "total crap" because it's poorly done, or because it's a horror series? I'm planning on checking it out but will probably wait until it completes so I can watch the whole season together in one shot. Edited July 22, 2014 by Shawn Quote
kinuta Posted July 22, 2014 Report Posted July 22, 2014 (edited) No, I was too hasty. It has a freaky panache that I found interesting and watchable. At first I thought it was yet another vampire/zombie yarn and I immediately switched to hard bitten cynic mode. Given a bit more time it could well turn into something properly scary. I never bought into Walking Dead but this has more potential for freaky horror. Edited July 22, 2014 by kinuta Quote
jazzbo Posted July 22, 2014 Report Posted July 22, 2014 "Black Box" from 7/10 (I have a lot of things on my DVR due to my 16 days of vacation!) Man, Dr. Black really does remind me of my gal (who I just spent a wonderful three day weekend with). This week I hope to catch up on "Longmire" and "The Bridge." And maybe try "The Strain." Quote

kinuta Posted July 28, 2014 Report Posted July 28, 2014 The Assets Excellent stuff and the best of it's kind since the similarily neglected Rubicon. The predominantly British cast are first rate and the focus on the investigative team's search for Ames is absorbing and compelling. ABC should hang their corporate heads in disgrace for the way they have botched the showing of this great mini series. Quote
jazzbo Posted July 28, 2014 Report Posted July 28, 2014 I agree, I have the two episodes aired Saturday yet to watch, nice series. Poor Rubicon! They haven't even released it on disc, which is a big shame, I want to watch that again. I got caught up on The Bridge, Falling Skies and Halt and Catch Fire. "Okay" tv. Quote
