jlhoots Posted June 25, 2014 Report Posted June 25, 2014 Happy Valley BBC 1 - 6 Superb, one of the best British crime thrillers I've ever seen. I think I've seen every major BBC and ITV cop thriller going back to Cracker, Morse and beyond, but I can't think of another that bowled me over so completely as Happy Valley. Thanks, Kinuta, for the rec here. Just finished episode 5 tonight. Superb. Interesting to see a series where all the strong characters are women. Sarah Lancashire is superb in the main role. Will this eventually make it to DVD?? Quote

jazzbo Posted June 27, 2014 Report Posted June 27, 2014 Well, yes, but. . . to me it's 90 percent "House." Entertaining at times. I'm watching episodes of "Long Island Medium." Quote
kinuta Posted June 27, 2014 Report Posted June 27, 2014 Well, yes, but. . . to me it's 90 percent "House." Entertaining at times. I'm watching episodes of "Long Island Medium." Yes, I can see that, less abrasive and narcissistic than House and still concentrated on neurological matters, although the spectre of the dreaded mother in law derailing her love life looms large. All beside the point as it's no doubt doomed to an early appointment with Ye Olde corporate hatchet man Quote
jazzbo Posted June 27, 2014 Report Posted June 27, 2014 (edited) Watching last night's "Black Box" now. My biggest beef with the show is that they use extreme poetic license with the way withdrawing from psychiatric drugs and initiating psychiatric drugs are portrayed. At the very least they shorten the time frame drastically. Bothers me, gets me out of the story. Interesting personal history with this show for me. It premiered and watching Kelly Reilly made me think once again of an old friend here in Ohio from when I lived here before over 33 years agno, whom I had located and started a bit of email communication with. I had recently arranged finally to have two evenings off a week, and after watching the premier I made another attempt to meet with this old friend. We did meet, the very next Thursday, and in fact two nights later we watched the second show together on my DVR. We have spent each of my nights off together since that first Thursday night. And as many other hours as we can squeeze in of my very limited free time. "Black Box" accelerated my making another effort to get in touch with her, and believe me, I'm so glad I did. kinuta Posted June 29, 2014 Report Posted June 29, 2014 (edited) The Assets Keen tele addicts might remember this ABC eight part mini series based on the espionage escapades of Aldrich Ames. In a WTF moment ABC cancelled it after just two, excellent and riveting, episodes. Fans gnashing of teeth proved ineffective but now, after a gap of several months the remaining episodes are available on line It's really, really good, I recommend it and also Aldrich Ames : The Traitor Within , if you can find a copy. jazzbo Posted July 2, 2014 Report Posted July 2, 2014 Tyrant (FX), episodes 1 and 2. Okay so far. Has Moran Atias and Justin Kirk going for it. Quote
kinuta Posted July 2, 2014 Report Posted July 2, 2014 Halt And Catch Fire AMC I binge watched the first five episodes and am addicted. I'm glad you are enjoying Tyrant, Lol, but I'm sorry to say I have given up, it's just too silly for me. The premise might have been interesting but is ruined by the English speaking Arabs, the would be successor to the late king gives his big speech to a crowd of Arabs in English FGS, hopelessly miscast non Arab lead role who looks like he was invited to a boring party, whining wife and bratty kids and several other things I found totally ridiculous. Shawn Posted July 2, 2014 Report Posted July 2, 2014 (edited) Americans hate subtitles, if you put a show on the air with a lot of subtitles you are pretty much guaranteed people will turn the channel. Just the way it is. Thus everybody speaks English, even when they shouldn't. Edited July 2, 2014 by Shawn Quote

I agree it's ridiculous, but so is Halt and Catch Fire imo, that's one of the most unrealistic shows I've ever watched. I expect ridiculous from TV. Edited July 2, 2014 by jazzbo Quote

A Lark Ascending Posted July 5, 2014 Report Posted July 5, 2014 (edited) "The Honourable Woman" A new BBC series - espionage, terrorism, a Middle Eastern dimension. Just watched episode 1. Very impressive. One of those complex, elusive things that has you guessing. Promising. I've also finally got round to: Which is engaging but I'd expected something more given all the excitement over it. Suffers from that ITV thing of being chunked down between adverts; even when there are no adverts the gaps show. Also all the suspects wander round looking like suspects! kinuta Posted July 5, 2014 Report Posted July 5, 2014 I enjoyed the first episode of The Honourable Woman very much, and managed to follow the plotline without any headscratching. Maggie Gyllenhaal's British pronunciation was a real bobbydazzler. I couldn't understand the praise heaped on Broadchurch. I thought it was all right, no more than that. Quote

He mumbles through the series. Maybe they'll retrain him to say things like 'Awesome'. Can't imagine the Dorset accents of the other characters would go down well in Fox-land. Though you'll miss the best part of the programme - the Dorset landscapes. Where is the USA's Jurassic Coast? Edited July 6, 2014 by A Lark Ascending Quote
