Peter Johnson Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 Yup...I think there was whistling on there as well as vocalese! Quote
tonym Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 Errr...what was the question again? That's it 'Free Form'. Blimey I bought it when it was RVG'd and you know what? Because I can't put it on the iPod (I know there is a way, but I haven't fathomed it yet) I have yet to listen to it!!! I will, in dedication to this thread, 'cos I think it's about 'Free Form' , put it on this evening. Or after the Top Gear re-runs have finished . Quote
David Ayers Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 That's Joe Harriott's Free Form, right? Quote
ralphie_boy Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 I had it briefly and I traded it away. I guess I was expecting something a little more "free". It's pretty much a straight-ahead hard bop date. I didn't find it too interesting. Quote
sal Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 I like the album more than other Byrd albums from the period. Alot of his stuff gets repetitive to me, but I thought Free Form was refreshingly different. The RVG sounds nice. Quote
bertrand Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 tonym, Why is it you can't put this session on your iPod? Is it because you haven't figured out how to upload CDs into your iPod in general, or is it because of copy protection? If it's the latter, I will start an open letter to Blue Note in another forum which I will send to Michael Cuscuna. If copy protection prevents CDs from being uploaded to iPods, that is totally unacceptable. If anything, it will encourage stealing. The iPod is a playback medium, just like a CD player. One should be able to upload any CD to it. Bertrand. Quote

There is some software which allows you to do it, and I've heard some weird claims that black marker pen around the periphary of the disc will allow uploading, but no luck yet. That software does look mighty confusing. As it happens, I've also heard talk that the new batch of European RVGs won't have CP. Can't remeber where I read that though. Quote
tonym Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 (edited) Anyhow, that second track by Hancock sounds remarkably like Alone and I from errr...errr, you know Hancock's debut. On the whole it a very riffy, straight ahead disc. Much like some of Morgan's post Sidewinder stuff, but then you hear Shorter's playing and in spite of it being only 1961, he has that slurry, emerging-from-the-ground sound. But then he comes across all Coltrane. Edited March 29, 2005 by tonym Quote
bertrand Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 Aha - you say that 'Night Flower' and 'Alone And I' are similar/the same? I'll check. The McMaster Free Form had 'Night Flower' listed as composed by Byrd on the back cover (liner notes had Hancock). As for the iPod issue, I will start a separate thread in reissues. Bertrand. Quote
DatDere Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 (edited) The RVG reissue lists Hancock as the composer of "Night Flower" on the back. I don't have a lot of other Donald Byrd records from this period, but I think Free Form is a nice, but fairly average record. Edited March 29, 2005 by DatDere Quote
BFrank Posted March 30, 2005 Report Posted March 30, 2005 They changed the color of the lettering from the regular issue to the RVG. I'm not sure what the original colors were on the LP. Quote
Eric Posted October 28, 2012 Report Posted October 28, 2012 (edited) They changed the color of the lettering from the regular issue to the RVG. I'm not sure what the original colors were on the LP. anybody know the answer? on one issue the words "form" and "byrd" are green and on another they are red maybe green = lp and red = CD (although I see some red lps on ebay) I have the mid-80s lp which is green yes, things are a little slow around here Edited October 28, 2012 by Eric Quote

felser Posted October 28, 2012 Report Posted October 28, 2012 Free Form is the Byrd I play the most, because of the title track. Billy Higgins is a wonder on that track. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UFrBXvG4q8k Quote
Guy Berger Posted October 28, 2012 Report Posted October 28, 2012 I have this one in the "yet-to-listen-to" pile, but I would think Wayne's tenor playing would almost make it worth hearing even if everyone else was just playing fart noises. Quote
CJ Shearn Posted October 29, 2012 Report Posted October 29, 2012 Higgins groove on this I always thought of as a precursor to drum n bass, which I wonder if maybe this track was an influence to drum n bass producers. Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted October 31, 2012 Report Posted October 31, 2012 youre thinking of FANCY FREE-, w. the rhodes, free form is an earlier lp. honestly i -had-, a ny usa copy, i traded it, + 20 dollars for the Buddy Collette on Dooto. it had to be done Quote

chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted November 1, 2012 Report Posted November 1, 2012 free form is kind of like the ABACAB of blue note albums, with the artwork variations! i wonder why! Quote
