Jazz Kat Posted March 26, 2005 Report Posted March 26, 2005 Okay, this night we were down in Jersey. We had dinner at this italian place. On the outside where they had speakers, is where I heard Jimmy Smith, See See Rider from Home Cookin'. Which gave me the idea to start this thread. So that's sighting number one. Quote
JSngry Posted March 26, 2005 Report Posted March 26, 2005 I heard Sonny Rollins w/Jim Hall piped into a Jack In The Box ca. 1974. Didn't know enough of the material at that time to know what tune it was, but definitely knew it was them. Also heard "So What" (the KOB version) in a Kroger ca. 1987. Quote
Free For All Posted March 26, 2005 Report Posted March 26, 2005 I once heard Weather Report on a porn soundtrack. .....I mean...uh....a FRIEND told me he heard Weather Report on a porn soundtrack; yeah, that's it! ....and no, it wasn't Cucumber Slumber. Quote
JSngry Posted March 26, 2005 Report Posted March 26, 2005 Oh, if we're talking porn, I once heard "Big Swing Face" in a porn film. In Vegas, no less! Can't speak for anybody else, but if I had to fuck to Buddy Rich, I think I'd just as soon go without. Either that, or try to figure out how to concoct (and survive) a massive Viagra/cocaine cocktail. Maybe I'm just getting old. Quote
Dan Gould Posted March 26, 2005 Report Posted March 26, 2005 Sitting in Orioles Stadium on Thursday for the Red Sox - O's game, I heard Sweets Edison. OK, it was Sinatra, "Fly Me To The Moon" but when Sweets played those three notes he knew (as Sinatra once put it when he asked him to play on a record) there wasn't any doubt who it was, and I thought it was awfully cool to be hearing Sweets at a ballgame. Made me wish my wife could have been there, so I'd have had someone to tell. Quote
kenny weir Posted March 26, 2005 Report Posted March 26, 2005 Not jazz, but ... I got a kick out catching Cheap Trick blasting out Surrender in Daddy Day Care. Quote
paul secor Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 I often hear Monk and Miles on the Weather Channel when the local report comes on. I don't know if this is true only for this area or for the rest of the country as well. Quote

I don't know if this is true only for this area or for the rest of the country as well. Paul, there was a time there where I was hearing real, legit jazz on the Weather Channel also - but they didn't keep it up, at least not when I've been tuning in. Quote
chuckyd4 Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 One time I caught Django Reinhardt on the speakers in a J. Crew, and ended up having to buy my girlfriend a sweater because of it. I said "if you can tell me who this is playing right now, I'll buy you anything in this store." Whoops. Quote

I'd like to say that in this part of the country, we hear Weather Report on the Monk & Miles channel, but that would be a lie. Quote
Jazz Kat Posted March 29, 2005 Author Report Posted March 29, 2005 I forget the commercial, I think it's for a computer company, its some jazzy organ thing. Real fine descrption, I know, . Quote
Dan Gould Posted October 22, 2007 Report Posted October 22, 2007 Thanks to Paul for linking this thread in the Weather Channel "smooth jazz" thread, as it gives me a chance to post about a jazz sighting that really surprised me a few years ago. February 2006, coming back from a Wedding in Tampa we stopped at a Mickey D's outside of Orlando and I was absolutely blown away when I realized that Dexter Gordon's "Cheesecake" was playing. Quote
Kalo Posted October 22, 2007 Report Posted October 22, 2007 A new Cambodian restaurant in my neighborhood was playing some Blanton/Webster era Ellington last time I went there! Quote
clifford_thornton Posted October 22, 2007 Report Posted October 22, 2007 Next time maybe they'll actually play "Holiday in Cambodia"... Quote
Dan Gould Posted October 22, 2007 Report Posted October 22, 2007 Next time maybe they'll actually play "Holiday in Cambodia"... I remember when my roommate Freshman year introduced me to the Dead Kennedys. "Kill The Poor" became an immediate favorite. Quote
felser Posted October 22, 2007 Report Posted October 22, 2007 Both of the Panera Bread places near me pipe in non-stop hard bop, lots of Blue Note and Miles and Trane. I often go in and hang out for 90 minutes, coffee and a bagel, while my daughter is at dance class. Quote
MoGrubb Posted October 22, 2007 Report Posted October 22, 2007 I heard Keith Jarrett mentioned on The Sopranos the other night. Quote
medjuck Posted October 22, 2007 Report Posted October 22, 2007 During the AL baseball playoff on Saturday they showed a clip of Fred Lynn (sp?) running into the wall and mixed very low on the soundtrack so you could barely hear it was (for some reason I don't understand) "Sister Sadie". Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted October 22, 2007 Report Posted October 22, 2007 Our son is chef at a restaurant in Buffalo (Tempo) and while dining one evening I heard Benny Carter's "Further Definitions" in the background. Quote
milestones20 Posted October 22, 2007 Report Posted October 22, 2007 I don't recall how long ago, but the American Plastics Council used a quick clip of "Hat and Beard" by Dolphy. Also, I've heard a number of jazz things being played at my local mall, among them "Congeniality" by Ornette, "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" from Mingus Ah Um, and Wynton's version of "Autumn Leaves." Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted October 23, 2007 Report Posted October 23, 2007 Gardening and DIY TV programmes over here are full of jazz backgrounds. My wife watches them and I had to stop and watch when in one programme there were Grant Green's "Selma march", Jimmy Smith's "Back at the Chicken Shack" and Nat Adderely's "Work song". All in one programme! A few years ago, there was a beautiful TV ad for Renault Clio featuring Jimmy Smith's "Organ grinder swing", with a hammer (or was it a Renult?) smashing a huge pane of glass exactly in time with Grady Tate's cymbal, propelling JOS into the stratosphere! I've tried unsuccessfully to find that on Utube, because it's brilliant! MG Quote
DMP Posted November 8, 2007 Report Posted November 8, 2007 I heard Charlie Parker at my last visit to the dentist's. (Unfortunatley it was from the album with voices, but what the hell.) And a local Thai restaurant used to regularly play Clifford Brown.. Quote
AndrewHill Posted November 9, 2007 Report Posted November 9, 2007 A Ruby Tuesdays that we went to on a Tuesday I believe, alternated their music selection from adult contemporary to tracks off of Miles' "Milstones" and Blakey's "Moanin'." I believe I was the only one bobbin' my head to it in the entire joint. :rsmile: Quote
JSngry Posted November 9, 2007 Report Posted November 9, 2007 I saw Vic Firth on Emeril tonight. Who knew? Quote
BruceH Posted November 11, 2007 Report Posted November 11, 2007 There's a Thai place we used to go to a lot that often played jazz in the background. Miles, Dizzy, Mingus...it was nice. They seemed to stop doing that and for some reason we stopped going so often. Quote
