B. Goren. Posted March 26, 2005 Report Posted March 26, 2005 Happy birthday to James Moody who's celebrating his 80 birthday today. Two weeks ago AAJ published an article about James Moody. I wish him all the best and especially good health. Quote
JSngry Posted March 26, 2005 Report Posted March 26, 2005 Moody's not always made great records but he's always been a great player. He's never really gotten complacent harmonically, and his tone remains one of the most distinctive in jazz. Here's hoping that he continues to live longly and strongly. Quote
Jazz Kat Posted March 26, 2005 Report Posted March 26, 2005 hey, I like "Herb, where's Alpert?" Quote
B. Goren. Posted March 26, 2005 Author Report Posted March 26, 2005 Moody's not always made great records but he's always been a great player. I think he is in his best when he plays the flute. Quote
BbM7 Posted March 26, 2005 Report Posted March 26, 2005 Truly one of my favorite players. And one of my favorite people. A beautiful cat all around. Someday, I'll tell the story of Moody's birthday, oh so many years ago. I still laugh. I still cry. But the bottom line on it was, Moody's one h*ll of a guy. Quote
Alon Marcus Posted March 27, 2005 Report Posted March 27, 2005 Here are 3 of my favorite Moody albums (actually I have only 3 but they all my favorites). Moody's Party [LIVE] He played pretty well when he was seventy on this live concert with some guest stars. Benny's from Heaven is one of the funniest tracks I heard. Moody Plays Mancini At the Jazz Workshop This album can be found in a more reasonable price than the one shown in Amazon and was recorded by the "Chess" label. It has plenty of Moody on flute and also two tracks with Eddie Jefferson. On one of them he sings the famous Charlie Parker solo (which I think some of you already know by heart) from Lady Be Good from the JATP concert. Quote
Free For All Posted March 27, 2005 Report Posted March 27, 2005 When you meet him he frequently does the Euro kiss-on-each-cheek greeting, which is certainly endearing. He also wears a lot of cologne (it's not at all unpleasant, it's just that there's a lot of it!) and so after the greeting you are semi-permanently annointed with the scent. It was stuck in my coat for weeks! And I didn't even care. Quote
Jazz Kat Posted March 27, 2005 Report Posted March 27, 2005 Hey the last night of Moody at the Blue Note is tomorrow night! Go! Wish him happy birthday! Quote
mikeweil Posted March 27, 2005 Report Posted March 27, 2005 Happy Birthday, Sir James! His early 1950's Prestige sides are my favourites, really groovy! Quote
