kh1958 Posted April 18, 2005 Report Posted April 18, 2005 can anyone recommend any ESPs which are not too far out but are you know, more in the vein of what was happening on impulse records at the time? i don't want to be blown out of my chair but i would like to be lost in some exploratory music. i need a strong rhythmic pulse in my music. thank you for any input. How about looking for 'Explosions' by the Bob James Trio? Might still be available! An early Bob James date where he is accompanied by Barre Phillips on bass and Bob Pozar on drums. Not my favorite ESP but might fit with what you are looking for. Maybe the Sun Ra, Nothing Is. The first side of the LP is pretty accessible, with great bass playing by Ronnie Boykins and some outstanding John Gilmore solo work. Quote

Jazzmoose Posted April 20, 2005 Report Posted April 20, 2005 (edited) Thanks for posting that, Tony; good read. As for me, I'm forced by my late coming to jazz into the "I'll take what I can get" camp, unfortunately... (Plus, it's been far too long since I read that site; thanks! ) Edited April 20, 2005 by Jazzmoose Quote

I think you'd dig either one of the Marion Browns. Especially Why Not. It's pretty calm, as I remember. Quote
alankin Posted April 21, 2005 Report Posted April 21, 2005 Anyone here tried ESP's CD-R system? (And at full price, too!) It's too bad that, in order to get out-of-print ESP titles, the label itself has chosen to fall back on CD-Rs. I'm still looking for Frank Wright's first trio session, and Noah Howard's first quartet session. It's not listed on the website for discs available, but I was thinking of trying anyways for that Ran Blake album. Has anyone heard it? Yes, but not recently. Probably good. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted April 21, 2005 Report Posted April 21, 2005 The Ran Blake is one of his better ones, right up there with the (also early) Jeanne Lee duo. As for the Howard and Wright LPs, dig their records of a scant few years later. They were both, in 1965, just getting their thing together. Fun to listen to, but not as 'together' as other sides by these folks. Quote
ralphie_boy Posted April 21, 2005 Report Posted April 21, 2005 I really like the Noah Howard at Judson Hall session. I haven't listened to it in a while and need to revisit it soon. It has a nice chamber music feel with the prominent cello work. Quote
