Hardbopjazz Posted March 24, 2005 Report Posted March 24, 2005 Anyone know more about this label? ESP Quote
jazzbo Posted March 24, 2005 Report Posted March 24, 2005 Should you do a search you'll find quite a bit of discussion of these artists and this label. I have nearly every "jazz" release and really enjoy a lot of them. The Aylers, the Boykins, the Ras, the Marion Browns, the Sanders and the Simmons and the Waters. . . I actually play these fairly often. Quote
ralphie_boy Posted March 24, 2005 Report Posted March 24, 2005 Great label! I have many releases as well. Some of my favorites include the following: Marion Brown Quintet Frank Lowe Trio Albery Ayler - Spiritual Unity Charles Tyler - Eastern Man Alone Sun Ra - Heliocentric Worlds I and II Quote
jazzbo Posted March 24, 2005 Report Posted March 24, 2005 Ah yes, the Charles Tylers are excellent. As is the Gato. Quote
Guest akanalog Posted March 25, 2005 Report Posted March 25, 2005 can anyone recommend any ESPs which are not too far out but are you know, more in the vein of what was happening on impulse records at the time? i don't want to be blown out of my chair but i would like to be lost in some exploratory music. i need a strong rhythmic pulse in my music. thank you for any input. jazzbo Posted March 25, 2005 Report Posted March 25, 2005 Analog K, I think you'd dig the Ronnie Boykins or maybe even the latest Ayler from Fondation Maeght Nachts. . . . Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted March 25, 2005 Report Posted March 25, 2005 I was gonna say the Ronnie Boykins too. Not totally off the wall (not that there's anything wrong with that). Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted March 25, 2005 Report Posted March 25, 2005 Not totally off the wall (not that there's anything wrong with that). You must live in a very small room. B-) Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted March 25, 2005 Report Posted March 25, 2005 Why Chuck, I do believe that's the nicest thing you've ever said about me. Or wait, maybe not... Quote
.:.impossible Posted March 25, 2005 Report Posted March 25, 2005 Yeah, I considered putting a cut from the Boykins album on my blindfold test, but decided it was too loose for the audience. By the way check the album title for a gauge of how off the wall it actually is. If rhythmic pulse is what you are looking for, try this: eh hem. Quote

I think you'd dig either one of the Marion Browns. Charles Tyler's "Eastern Man Alone" is surely very accessible (and very good). Same refers to two piano trio albums - Lowell Davidson trio and Baob james trrio. Quote
Guest akanalog Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 thank you. i do actually own the boykins and like it a lot-besides the last tune which for the most part, seems to be lost in a morass of cluttering and clinking. good album, though. i was particularly looking at the marion browns, the marzette watts and the henry grimes as items of interest though i have heard none of them. Quote
Guest akanalog Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 though perhaps as someone who doesn't like clarinet, the grimes would not appeal to my senses. Quote
jazzbo Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 It IS all about the clarinet! I think you'd dig the Gato, I listened to part of that this weekend, and the Charles Tylers are cool. . . . Quote
jasonguthartz Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 (edited) Three outstanding but more obscure ESP records, all led by musicians otherwise barely documented: the eponymous releases by the Byron Allen Trio, the Lowell Davidson Trio, and the Giuseppi Logan Quartet. The Marzette Watts record is terrific, and, IMO, Frank Wright's best work is on ESP. Of course Ayler's "Spiritual Unity" is one of the landmarks of 20th century music. Speaking of Ayler & ESP, check this thread: http://www.jazzcornertalk.com/speakeasy/sh...ead.php?t=10231 and more opinions here: http://jazzcornertalk.com/speakeasy/showthread.php?t=5972 Edited March 29, 2005 by jasonguthartz Quote
clifford_thornton Posted March 31, 2005 Report Posted March 31, 2005 I've never heard an ESP jazz release I didn't like, but recommending the Marzette Watts and the Giuseppi Logan records to someone who prefers more 'tonal' saxophone playing (not to mention 'hates clarinet') is a might dubious... Just trying to keep 'em out of the used bins! CT Quote

How about looking for 'Explosions' by the Bob James Trio? Might still be available! An early Bob James date where he is accompanied by Barre Phillips on bass and Bob Pozar on drums. Not my favorite ESP but might fit with what you are looking for. Quote
MartyJazz Posted April 1, 2005 Report Posted April 1, 2005 Two that I liked a lot but whose titles escape me (I'm too lazy to go downstairs to the "archives" to get the LPs) are by Marion Brown. If you liked his THREE FOR SHEPP on Impulse, you might look up these ESPs, assuming they're available on CD. Quote
Late Posted April 18, 2005 Report Posted April 18, 2005 Anyone here tried ESP's CD-R system? (And at full price, too!) It's too bad that, in order to get out-of-print ESP titles, the label itself has chosen to fall back on CD-Rs. I'm still looking for Frank Wright's first trio session, and Noah Howard's first quartet session. Quote
RDK Posted April 18, 2005 Report Posted April 18, 2005 For those curious - and to cheaply get your feet wet with a-g - there are a lot of Leo's available for download at emusic.com Quote
