montg Posted July 2, 2005 Report Posted July 2, 2005 I received this set recently as an early birthday present and have been listening to it a lot since then. Although I'm only through the first two discs, I'm mightly impressed. Addey has noticeably improved the sound (compared to a domestic and a Japanese issue I previously owned). Freddie Green is clearly audible as is the bass (which often appears to be virutally in unison with the guitar). Lots of Lockjaw and Vice Pres on these first two discs, to which I say/gesture And a 10 minute jam with Basie on organ which is a highlight so far. I know Basie was on one (or two?) of Granz' jam sessions in the 50s but it's a shame Granz didn't record him more in that context (although I guess he attempted to make up for it later with the Pablos). Added bonus are the fine notes by CA. informative and witty-"the new Basie sound was well on its way to becoming as 'cool' as 3D movies, a Pollock action painting, or the drop of Holden Caufield's name." I'm listening to the set right now and, man, does Lockjaw sound good with Basie at the organ. Quote
StormP Posted July 5, 2005 Report Posted July 5, 2005 I just saw Cayman's offer on the Basie Set: $112.64 new. But, get this! The current Roy Eldridge set: $274.36 new ???? Who is this Cayman, is it a store or what ? Quote

Who is this Cayman, is it a store or what ? ← They're an internet seller that sells primarily through Amazon Marketplace and Ebay. I've ordered many CD's from them (including the Universal edition of the Tal Farlow Mosaic), and generally have had good luck with them. The only problem I've had is that occasionally they or their supplier won't have in stock something they've listed, in which case they'll immediately process a refund if you cancel the order. The Basie box they have is most certainly the Universal edition, which will be identical to the one you'd get directly from Mosaic except that it will have a different number on the spine and the booklet will not be individually numbered (but will still indicate that the set is one of a limited edition of 10,000). Universal is retaining the right to distribute some of the Verve sets for which they've licensed material to Mosaic. Quote
Tjazz Posted July 5, 2005 Report Posted July 5, 2005 (edited) caiman_com from Amazon $109.99 Now the price is $112.63 ($110.28 from Music_media) (July 10) $113.82 from Caiman_com (July 12) Edited July 12, 2005 by Tjazz Quote
ghost of miles Posted July 19, 2005 Report Posted July 19, 2005 Listening to this set all the way through for the first time, as I'm doing a show on it later this week, and man, does the NT band grow on me. When I first got into jazz, it was partly through the Decca Basie OT set--and for a long time, I found the 1950s unit too codified by contrast. Don't know if it's because I'm older or have just listened a lot more, but I have much more appreciation for the musicianship and arrangements on these NT records. Somehow this band sounds smooth (in the best sense of the word) and dynamic at the same time, a nice trick if you can do it. And Chris A.'s liner notes are a wonderful mix of description and anecdote; I particularly enjoyed his speculation about Basie's including the quote from "Blues in the Night" on the same day that a story appeared about his wife finding "a delicate letter" from a band singer in Basie's coat. Interesting, too, that Basie was supposed to be one of the first State Dpt. tour acts. Wonder why that didn't come off? I'll have to revisit SATCHMO BLOWS UP THE WORLD to see if that's discussed. jazzbo Posted July 19, 2005 Report Posted July 19, 2005 Yes, great notes on this set. Great music. Great sound. Does that make this triply great? Quote

jazzbo Posted July 19, 2005 Report Posted July 19, 2005 The Al Hibler stuff on this was new to me, and great stuff! Quote
ghost of miles Posted July 20, 2005 Report Posted July 20, 2005 Is it just me, or do some of the instrumental passages from DANCE SESSION (such as the trumpets on "Bubbles") sound way back in the mix? Was that deliberate? Quote
jazzbo Posted July 20, 2005 Report Posted July 20, 2005 They sound that way on all the versions I've heard. . . I'd say yes, I think it is related to trying to capture the overall dynamics of the music without distortion. Quote
Adam Posted September 25, 2005 Report Posted September 25, 2005 up for more feedback. Just debating whether to get this or the Woody Herman box first, but leaning Basie. Quote
