catesta Posted March 22, 2005 Report Posted March 22, 2005 A Hitler admiring Native American???? WTF?, is right. No obvious warning signs that this kid was a mental case. What a sad situation. Quote
ghost of miles Posted March 22, 2005 Report Posted March 22, 2005 A Hitler admiring Native American???? WTF?, is right. Yeah, pretty bizarre... ironic, too, in that the swastika was originally a Native American symbol--correct? Quote

Yeah, pretty bizarre... ironic, too, in that the swastika was originally a Native American symbol--correct? The Native Americans were one of several cultures that used the symbol. I remember a friend of mine that was Navajo had some old art work with the swastika emblem on it. Quote
ghost of miles Posted March 22, 2005 Report Posted March 22, 2005 Yeah, I used to live in an apartment building built sometime in the late 1920s/early 1930s, and in the lobby there was a tile floor with swastika designs all over it... freaked people out on occasion. Quote
BruceH Posted March 22, 2005 Report Posted March 22, 2005 Yeah, I heard that Hindu and Buddhist traditions used the swastika from way back. Too bad Hitler had to glom onto it and ruin it for everybody. It's also too bad that any teenage nutcase in this country can get ahold of a gun. Quote
Chrome Posted March 22, 2005 Report Posted March 22, 2005 It's also too bad that any teenage nutcase in this country can get ahold of a gun. Hey, you wouldn't want to curtail their 2nd amendment rights, would you? That would be un-American! Quote
Dan Gould Posted March 22, 2005 Report Posted March 22, 2005 Supposedly the gun was his grandfather's, who was a veteran of the police force. So, there's really no way to have kept it out of his hands short of the grandfather keeping it locked in a shatter-proof case. Quote

Tougher gun control or not it probably would not have made one bit of difference if the kid used guns owned by his policeman grandfather. Quote
BruceH Posted March 22, 2005 Report Posted March 22, 2005 All I know is, when I was a teenager (in the 70s) I don't recall the threat of guns in the schools even being conceivable, much less a problem. In the 90's, kids started shooting up their schools on a regular basis. Doesn't seem like a change for the better, to say the least. Quote

Sorry, sometimes when I read these kinds of stories I start getting this weird twitching in my knee ... Quote
Dave James Posted March 22, 2005 Report Posted March 22, 2005 According to the reports I've seen, this is another loner kid who was teased and taunted unmercifully by his peers. His father committed suicide four years ago and his mother has lived in a nursing home since she sustained brain injuries in an automobile accident. I wouldn't exactly call that the recipe for a healthy and happy childhood. Not that this in any way relieves him of responsibility for his actions. It's just an incredibly sad state of affairs. With regard to gun control, if anyone saw the 60 minutes piece last Sunday night about the Russian guy who basically outfitted a small army by buying guns and ammunition in this country and then exporting back home, then you have a pretty good idea of how far out of control this whole thing really is. Up over and out. Quote

In the 90's, kids started shooting up their schools on a regular basis. Doesn't seem like a change for the better, to say the least. I hear you. But, the gun laws back in the 70's were much more relaxed than today. The difference is that the common person had much more respect for human life. Today shit is glorified on TV, in movies, conversation, music, kids buy into it much easier. Some obviously have a problem seperating right from wrong. Who gets the blame? There was a time when even the most hard core criminals never dreamed of killing a cop or a judge, today fuckheads busted for shoplifting don't give it a second thought. It's not only about guns. This kid had a major malfunction that nobody realized or took seriously. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for keeping the guns out of the hands of criminals and lunatics. However, in this case we are talking about a cops grandson. The grandfather would have had the guns no matter what laws they passed for you and me. It's really not change for the better. Stop this fucking world, I want to get off. Quote
