B. Goren. Posted March 21, 2005 Report Posted March 21, 2005 This is probably one of the best CDs I recently bought. After more than 30 years apart, Archie Shepp & Roswell Rudd decided to record again and to show us that the old chemistry is still working. Reggie Workman on bass, Andrew Cyrille on drums and Grachan Moncur III on trombone, all of them are doing also a perfect job. Strongly recommended. Quote
JohnS Posted March 21, 2005 Report Posted March 21, 2005 Maybe not quite so good as the old group but some of the magic is still there. Nevertheless still a fine recording. Quote
king ubu Posted March 21, 2005 Report Posted March 21, 2005 Hmmm, I tend to disagre.. I look at this, the Lacy/Rudd and the Taylor/Redman/Elvin as sort of a series, and while the last is ok, and the Lacy/Rudd I love, I never found the Shepp/Rudd all that good. Quote

JohnS Posted March 22, 2005 Report Posted March 22, 2005 I agree with the King here, the Rudd/Lacy is the better and more important recording. The great thing about the Shepp disc is that the guys are playing together again and that they are playing so well. I saw the original band several times during their stint at Ronnie Scott's, electrifying stuff from the off. Garrison was especially effective with his long opening flamenco style intros. Later, when they played on the same bill as Miles they were roundly booed, they were some minor scuffles and many walked out! Did I read that a Shepp/Rudd Quartet is palying in Europe this summer? One to see. Quote

Maybe organissimo.org really is a microcosm of the actual jazz audience. I never was too fond of any later Shepp (the last album I really love is the trio on Enja, "Steam"). Rudd, though... I absolutely love his recent "MaliCOOL" album, and as I said, he's on top form with Lacy (on that official release as well as on a live recording I've heard). Then I recently got the Shepp/Waldron "Left Alone Revisited" from the library and rather liked the few cuts I've heard so far, not only because of Waldron, so I'll have to return to that one! Quote
John L Posted March 22, 2005 Report Posted March 22, 2005 I saw Shepp/Rudd live around the time of this disc. The live show was quite nice, stronger than the disc. Quote
