Soul Stream Posted March 21, 2005 Report Posted March 21, 2005 John Manning played Tenor on a couple of Soul Jazz masterpieces...Reuben Wilson's "Blue Mode" and Melvin Sparks "Sparks." That was it... He really blows one of the FUNKIEST and OUT solos on Wilson's "Bus Ride." That solo kills me. I mean that cat was playing on a Blue Note funk date and he took that mutha out. Yet, really kept the funk flavor. Beautiful. He had a nice thing. But like so many, seems to have disappeared. Anybody ever hear of him? Quote
JSngry Posted March 21, 2005 Report Posted March 21, 2005 He was from Houston, like Sparkplug, right? Quote
Soul Stream Posted March 21, 2005 Author Report Posted March 21, 2005 He was from Houston, like Sparkplug, right? Really? Have no idea about ANYTHING.... Jim, you GOTTA love his stuff on Bus Ride. Quote
JSngry Posted March 21, 2005 Report Posted March 21, 2005 Yes I do. Him & Harold Alexander on UNDERSTANDING (and the other, later Patton), they paved a Brave New World in their own ways. Quote
JSngry Posted March 21, 2005 Report Posted March 21, 2005 Liners to LOVE BUG say that Manning was from Houston. No mention of him anywhere here: http://www.jazzhouston.com/ But they do have a forum: http://www.jazzhouston.com/forum/ at which I was able to register but not post. Might be a cookie issue. I also got a buddy or two who're tight w/some of the older players in Houston. Lemme give tehm a call and see if they can make a call and maybe get some more info. No promises, but... Quote

Would love to know if he's still around and active, or just plain around. Thanks. I managed to register on Houstonjazz and post a question on his whereabouts, I'll let you know if I get a response. K1969 Posted March 24, 2010 Report Posted March 24, 2010 John Manning ...really blows one of the FUNKIEST and OUT solos on Wilson's "Bus Ride." That solo kills me. I mean that cat was playing on a Blue Note funk date and he took that mutha out. Yet, really kept the funk flavor. Beautiful. Anybody ever hear of him? This is so true. An amazing solo. Just listened to bus ride again for the first time in years and straight away sought out more info on Manning which brought me to your old post. He reminds me a little of Sam Rivers on Larry Young's Into something Quote
JSngry Posted March 25, 2010 Report Posted March 25, 2010 Nobody in Houston I've spoken with (all my age or a little older) over the years knows of him, he was before their time. So, older than Sparks, that's for sure, and I guess he never came back. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted March 22, 2016 Report Posted March 22, 2016 Was John Manning white? Because there's a white sax player by that name in a band called Roarshack up in Ontario. https://roarshackband.wordpress.com/about/ They're not young guys, so I wondered... MG Quote
