brownie Posted April 2, 2009 Report Posted April 2, 2009 I did! What a splendid disc it is! One of Solal's best solo album. Wish CamJazz had included more from those Village Vanguard sets. Solal is 81 now and plans to end public appearances soon. Caught him at the Duc des Lombard last week. One of eight solo sets. Full of surprises. Will try not to miss further appearances. Quote

Teasing the Korean Posted November 16, 2009 Report Posted November 16, 2009 Any sign of a reissue of "Stress," his collaboration with Marius Constant? Quote
brownie Posted November 17, 2009 Report Posted November 17, 2009 This came out on CD in 1992 (on Erato). No sign of a reissue so far. Quote
brownie Posted July 30, 2010 Report Posted July 30, 2010 A forever young Martial Solal played a solo recital at the Arènes de Montmartre in Paris last week. My Funny Valentine Quote
king ubu Posted July 30, 2010 Report Posted July 30, 2010 Great! I wish I could see him live in an appropriate setting (the Griffin-Solal-NHOP concert I saw didn't work quite well, Griff was drunk and Solal was bored). Quote
brownie Posted August 18, 2010 Report Posted August 18, 2010 Martial Solal appears with Stefano Bollani at the Ramatuelle jazz festival today. Ramatuelle is on the French Riviera, near Saint-Tropez. The concert will be broadcast live (from 2000GMT) on the TSF Jazz radio. Click on ECOUTER TSF! The concert will be preceded by an one-hour introduction, probably with interviews of the pianists. MartyJazz Posted August 18, 2010 Report Posted August 18, 2010 Recently received this disc and have been enjoying it quite a bit: Quote
sidewinder Posted August 18, 2010 Report Posted August 18, 2010 Solal is 81 now and plans to end public appearances soon. Wasn't aware of that ! Good to catch his appearance at Bath earlier this year - still sharp as a tack, with his trio. What a fast mind ! An earlier appearance at the same festival back in 1987/88 was even better I think. Some of the best solo jazz piano I have ever heard. And only 100 or so of us in the audience. Quote
brownie Posted April 7, 2011 Report Posted April 7, 2011 Martial Solal's appearance next week (April 13) at the Village Vanguard will be shown live Martial Solal at VV Quote
king ubu Posted April 7, 2011 Report Posted April 7, 2011 Great to see he's still doing his thing! Quote

umum_cypher Posted April 8, 2011 Report Posted April 8, 2011 (edited) Great to see he's still doing his thing! My thoughts, exactly. Apologies if this has been mentioned earlier in the thread, but I've been watching a video of a German TV show from 1965 which, judging by his response, seems to represent the first time Johnny Griffin had heard Solal. After Solal's first solo, JG walks around the piano shaking his head, saying 'ridiculous!'. And indeed it had been. Wes Montgomery is also in the band (same time as the thing Niko mentions above). Not a bad lineup. Edited April 8, 2011 by umum_cypher Quote
Tom Storer Posted April 13, 2011 Report Posted April 13, 2011 Ethan Iverson was impressed by Solal's technique but miffed that Solal seemed to diss Monk as "not a serious pianist." Iverson's grumblings are here. Quote
Steve Reynolds Posted April 13, 2011 Report Posted April 13, 2011 thanks for the link, Tom I *really* enjoyed reading that commentary. but alas all I could think of was a week ago last Thursday and of course they are not youngsters on the way up - but I thought of ICP from 10 feet away playing "Jackie-Ing" and I have *never* heard a band swing like Monk like that - Tobius Delius tenor solo and what followed with Bennink et al was pure Monk in it's absolute essence. Swinging, not abstract yet totally out in it's own way. and a few weeks earlier Ellery Eskelin with Gary Versace and Nasheet Waits played what may have been Bye-A for the first 12-15 minutes of a second set and it was although not on the same level as what Misha, Han and the band does, it was Monk worthy as well - especially the playing of Eskelin - an aside is listen to Ellery with Han on Dissonant Characters take on Brilliant Corners. Monk's music is alove and well and in in the right hands it might be the music I most want to hear covered as the one thing that Misha once pointed out quite controversally is that he plays with guys better than the guys that Monk played with - and as far as drummers go he is correct! plus Monk never had Wolter Wierbos in his band Quote
Clunky Posted April 13, 2011 Report Posted April 13, 2011 Ethan Iverson was impressed by Solal's technique but miffed that Solal seemed to diss Monk as "not a serious pianist." Iverson's grumblings are here. Ethan's disquiet with Solal's comments seems out of proportion IMO. We all like Monk and it's pretty clear that Solal does too. Much fuss about nothing. Quote
Steve Reynolds Posted April 13, 2011 Report Posted April 13, 2011 the odd part to me is that he allowed someone's comments (Solal's) to put him in a bad mood and make him angry. sounds like I used to get (and still sometimes can get) despite Iverson's interesting comments it still would not surprise me if he never heard Misha and Han play Monk - which is not suprising as my father in law pointed out when I showed himan amazing clip of the ICP playing Criss Cross and then another playing a Misha tune that there were soemthing under 1000 views. maybe Ethan might want to take a listen to these guys to get a new perspective on what some others might be capable of doing with Monk. I realize you're just being you, but Iverson is a pretty eclectic, voracious listener, so your assumptions may be more due to your prejudices than anything in the real world. Quote
Steve Reynolds Posted July 30, 2012 Report Posted July 30, 2012 I do realize he is quite the listener as I have much of what is on his wonderful blog site or whatever one might call it... but I *still* wonder if he has listened to Bennink/Misha's Monk Maybe I would be curious to hear what he thinks Quote
bluenoter Posted August 3, 2012 Report Posted August 3, 2012 (edited) his wonderful blog site or whatever one might call it http://DoTheMath.typepad.com/ But I don't see contact info. Teasing the Korean Posted August 3, 2012 Report Posted August 3, 2012 OK, what the hell is that album he did with Michel Magne? How have I missed this? Is it amazing? Is it in print? I am STILL hoping to find a copy of his album with Marius Constant, "Stress," but no such luck yet. Quote
