Jazz Vinyl Posted March 16, 2005 Report Posted March 16, 2005 I enjoy this underated LP more with each listening. Eddie's deep tenor tone is incredible and his sound was crisply captured on this 1981 Nessa LP. Can anyone tell me more about Eddie Johnson, does he have other releases? Chuck? THANKS Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted March 16, 2005 Report Posted March 16, 2005 In 1999 Eddie made this one for Delmark. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted March 16, 2005 Report Posted March 16, 2005 He's also featured on this 1996 Jodie Christian date. Quote
Jazz Vinyl Posted March 16, 2005 Author Report Posted March 16, 2005 Do you have any personnal recollections, Chuck? THANKS Quote
Guest DizzySpells Posted March 17, 2005 Report Posted March 17, 2005 There's a sealed one available on amazon.com. I believe that is the only Nessa product I have (I have NO idea where I picked that one up), and it's one damn fine LP! Quote

Guest DizzySpells Posted March 17, 2005 Report Posted March 17, 2005 How many were actually pressed of that one? Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted March 17, 2005 Report Posted March 17, 2005 He asked for a story and I have neither the time or energy, but I do have a couple to tell. Remind me later if you really care. Quote
AllenLowe Posted March 17, 2005 Report Posted March 17, 2005 I still wanna hear the Dizzy Gillespie story - Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted March 17, 2005 Report Posted March 17, 2005 (edited) How many were actually pressed of that one? Best guess is 2500-3000. It was a relatively big hit on the South Side in Chicago. Edited March 17, 2005 by Chuck Nessa Quote

paul secor Posted May 22, 2007 Report Posted May 22, 2007 He asked for a story and I have neither the time or energy, but I do have a couple to tell. Remind me later if you really care. Up. I was perusing old threads for things I'd missed or forgotten - there's a wealth of information and opinions to get one listening and thinking to be found there, if you take the time to look. Anyway, I found this Eddie Johnson thread and I'd like to hear those stories, if Chuck has the time and inclination. Quote
Lazaro Vega Posted May 22, 2007 Report Posted May 22, 2007 (edited) "Eddie Johnson told Chuck Nessa that he subbed for Ben Webster in the Duke Ellington Orchestra on more than one occasion--once he was called to Detroit to do so. Presumably this was during Ben Webster's second stay with the Duke, in 1948-1949." Enjoying the Eddie Johnson web site. "Splanky" is thee cut from "Indian Summer." Would love to find out more about this Love archive: "According to Art Zimmerman, a Chicago physician, Dr. Jerome Love, recorded many nightclub performances and concerts by jazz musicians in Chicago between 1952 and 1959. Love made binaural recordings, using a dummy head with microphones mounted on each side. Each reel of tape contained up to 30 minutes of music. The Love archives contain 6 reels from this performance (up to 3 hours of music). Personnel and date as per the Love archives; the leader's name is misspelled "Tate" and the drummer's name comes out "Walden." And the location is not given. From what is known about other recordings in the Love archives, some of the titles will be incomplete." Edited May 22, 2007 by Lazaro Vega Quote

Free For All Posted May 23, 2007 Report Posted May 23, 2007 (edited) Great to see those guys! How's young John Young doing these days? EDIT: BTW, I did several of the arrangements for Jodie's Front Line date. FWIW. Edited May 23, 2007 by Free For All Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted May 23, 2007 Report Posted May 23, 2007 Great to see those guys! How's young John Young doing these days? Last time I saw John was a couple of years back (with Uncle Skid) and he seemed very feeble but played like Young John Young. Last I heard from friends was not encouraging. Quote

mjzee Posted August 13, 2013 Report Posted August 13, 2013 Just finished listening to this. So enjoyable. Eddie and band had that deep groove, unhurried swing, and Eddie's tone is just wonderful. If you need to fill your late-period Ben Webster fix, Eddie's your man. Quote
colinmce Posted August 13, 2013 Report Posted August 13, 2013 I put this on today as well. Very nice. Quote
