JSngry Posted March 17, 2005 Report Posted March 17, 2005 Well, she HAS done a few big band albums, but the time for effective nudidity has probably long passed... Quote
chris olivarez Posted March 17, 2005 Report Posted March 17, 2005 I went with Alone Again. It somehow seems more pathetic. The other two are more teeny-bopish, so they get a pass. Those three are prime examples of why I was greatful that I had a lot of record albums and never subjected myself to that "music?" during the 70's. One exception I worked at a country station in the 70's and as such was pretty much obliged to listen to it during the day but country radio in the 70's was infinitely superior to the dreck that was played on pop stations at the same time. Once I went home after the work day the jazz and blues came on and I left all of it behind. BTW Eric I dig the avatar I've been cranking that one up a lot lately. Quote
John L Posted March 17, 2005 Report Posted March 17, 2005 As soon as I saw this thread, I thought about contributing "Love Will Keep Us Together." But SS1 beat me to it. That was one song that never failed to ruin my mood every time I heard it. Quote
BruceH Posted March 17, 2005 Report Posted March 17, 2005 You left out Feelings and Color My World. Two tunes that I couldn't play without falling asleep on the stand. BARF! "Feelings" is the worst!!! Worse than any song in the poll----it should be listed under the Geneva Convention. Quote
Dan Gould Posted March 17, 2005 Author Report Posted March 17, 2005 I'd like to point out that the three named tunes were inspired and came directly from the article about "Seasons in the Sun" in Slate that had been posted yesterday. http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...pic=17899&st=0& Quote
Neal Pomea Posted March 18, 2005 Report Posted March 18, 2005 IN THE SUMMERTIME WHEN THE WEATHER IS FINE YOU GOT A PROBLEM WITH SKIFFLE, RUDIE? TELL IT TO SHAGGY Skiffle? I was listening to Richard M. Jones at Red Hot Jazz Archive and found Tickle Britches Blues might be the source for the melody: http://www.redhotjazz.com/songs/jones/tickle.ram Quote
Jazz Kat Posted March 19, 2005 Report Posted March 19, 2005 You left out Feelings and Color My World. Two tunes that I couldn't play without falling asleep on the stand. BARF! Oh come on, Colour My World is good. It is a little corny, but it's got that cool jam in the middle, with the soprano solo. I chose Seasons, I have heard a couple good arrangements of Alone Again, done by Herb Alpert. Quote
Jazz Kat Posted March 19, 2005 Report Posted March 19, 2005 My bad I was thinking of Just You And Me. Quote
robviti Posted March 19, 2005 Report Posted March 19, 2005 here's one of my least-favorites that's not been mentioned. my apologies in advance to anyone who might suffer audio trauma after being reminded of this piece of crap. The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia He was on his way home from Candletop, Been two weeks gone and he thought he'd stop At Webb's and have him a drink 'fore he went home to her Andy Wollo said hello And he said, "Hi, what's doin', Wo?" "Seth, sit down. I got some bad news; it's gonna hurt." He said, "I'm your best friend and you know that's right. But your young bride ain't home tonight. Since you been gone, she's been seein' that Amos boy, Seth." Well, he got mad 'n' he saw red And Andy said, "Boy, don'tcha lose your head 'Cause to tell ya the truth, I been with her myself." CHORUS: That's the night that the lights went out in Georgia That's the night that they hung an innocent man Well, don't trust your soul to no backwoods Southern lawyer 'Cause the judge in the town's got bloodstains on his hands Well, Andy got scared and left the bar, Walkin' on home 'cause he didn't live far See, Andy didn't have many friends and he'd just lost him one Brother thought his wife musta left town So, he went home and finally found The only thing Papa had left him, that was a gun And he went off to Andy's house A-skippin' through the backwoods quiet as a mouse, Came upon some tracks too small for Andy to make He looked through the screen at the back-porch door And he saw Andy lyin' on the floor In a puddle of blood and he started to shake Well, the Georgia Patrol was a-makin' their rounds So, he fired a shot just to flag 'em down, And a big-bellied sheriff got his gun and said, "Why d'ya do it?" And the judge said, "Guilty" in a make-believe trial And slapped the sheriff on the back with a smile, Said, "Supper's waitin' at home and I gotta get to it" CHORUS Well, they hung my brother before I could say The tracks he saw while on his way To Andy's house and back that night were mine And his cheatin' wife had never left town And that's one body that'll never be found See, little sister don't miss when she aims her gun CHORUS Quote
maren Posted March 19, 2005 Report Posted March 19, 2005 Thanks, jazzshrink, but -- I never caught many of the words to that song, and I'm not inclined to start now !!! Quote
Jazzmoose Posted March 19, 2005 Report Posted March 19, 2005 Jazzshrink, you are a cruel, cruel man... Quote
JSngry Posted March 19, 2005 Report Posted March 19, 2005 You wonder why so many people were getting high in the 70s? Hell, it was to numb the freakin' pain! Quote
Jazz Kat Posted March 19, 2005 Report Posted March 19, 2005 The 70's had the worst pop music. Oh that is not as bad as the 80's 90's and 200's, but the 70's was still pretty bad. Let's not forget about disco. Quote
Free For All Posted March 19, 2005 Report Posted March 19, 2005 Insignificant factoid: Drummer Jeff Hamilton is married to Vicki Lawrence's sister. Quote
Free For All Posted March 19, 2005 Report Posted March 19, 2005 Oh come on, Colour My World is good. It is a little corny, but it's got that cool jam in the middle, with the soprano solo. It's a flute solo. Quote
Jazz Kat Posted March 19, 2005 Report Posted March 19, 2005 (edited) Yeah like I said I was thinking of Just You And Me. I think it's a very nice flute solo by Walter Parazaider. The song was part of a 7 or 8 song suite off their second album which was very cool. These were the good songs before Chicago turned pop and threw all the coolness and brilliance they ever had out the window. Edited March 19, 2005 by Jazz Kat Quote
Free For All Posted March 19, 2005 Report Posted March 19, 2005 And don't forget Paul Anka's Havin' My Baby. *gaack* Quote

Soulstation1 Posted March 20, 2005 Report Posted March 20, 2005 i guess i'll post it Seasons In The Sun ( Terry Jacks ) Goodbye to you my trusted friend We've known each other since we were nine or ten Together we climbed hills and trees Learned of love and A B C's Skinned our hearts and skinned our knees. Goodbye my friend it's hard to die When all the birds are singing in the sky Now that the spring is in the air Pretty girls are everywhere Think of me and I'll be there We had joy we had fun We had seasons in the sun But the hills that we climbed were just seasons Out of time...... Goodbye Papa please pray for me I was the black sheep of the family You tried to teach me right from wrong Too much wine and too much song Wonder how I got along. Goodbye Papa its hard to die When all the birds are singing in the sky Now that the spring is in the air Little children everywhere When you see them I'll be there. We had joy we had fun We had seasons in the sun But the wine and the song like the seasons Have all gone. We had joy we had fun We had seasons in the sun But the wine and the song like the seasons Have all gone. Goodbye Michelle my little one You gave me love and helped me find the sun And every time that I was down You would always come around And get my feet back on the ground. Goodbye Michelle it's hard to die When all the birds are singing in the sky Now that the spring is in the air With the flowers everywhere I wish that we could both be there We had joy we had fun We had seasons in the sun But the stars we could reach Were just starfish on the beach We had joy we had fun We had seasons in the sun But the stars we could reach Were just starfish on the beach We had joy we had fun We had seasons in the sun But the wine and the song like the seasons Have all gone All our lives we had fun We had seasons in the sun But the hills that we climbed were just seasons Out of time...... We had joy we had fun We had seasons in the sun Quote
