Brad Posted March 25, 2005 Report Posted March 25, 2005 Besides Ellington, Monk, etc., don't forget Charlie Parker, the Bird. His stuff is essential. But you'll get to it eventually. Have you checked out the Mosaic website (mosaicrecords.com). That will give you a great cross-section of some amazing music. I don't really have favorites. I love it all. Quote
bertrand Posted March 25, 2005 Report Posted March 25, 2005 You must of course start with my two favorite records: Wayne Shorter - Etcetera (Blue Note) Jackie McLean - Destination Out! (Blue Note) Bertrand. Quote
X-Bishop Posted March 27, 2005 Author Report Posted March 27, 2005 Kim Waters also makes some pretty good music as well Quote
Guy Berger Posted March 27, 2005 Report Posted March 27, 2005 If you have jazz that you like, check out the individual players- is there a very good drummer, trumpet player, etc? If so, find recordings by that player as a leader, then do the same on those recordings. Over time, you'll discover a lot of great music. I started with John McLaughlin, moved on to Miles when I saw that McLaughlin was on a recording of Miles, then discovered tons of great people as a result. I more or less followed the same path into jazz as PhillyQ. Just pay attention to who's on the CDs you like, and get more stuff featuring them. Guy Quote
