chris olivarez Posted May 6, 2005 Report Posted May 6, 2005 Played a Tjader cut every hour I was on the air yesterday. His music just keeps sounding better and better!!!! Quote
Cali Posted May 11, 2005 Report Posted May 11, 2005 There is a Cal Tjader Tribute concert happening this friday in my neck of the woods. On the email announcement was this interesting web site: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cal_Tjader Quote
mikeweil Posted May 11, 2005 Report Posted May 11, 2005 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cal_Tjader The wikipedia entry contains some questionable judgements about his albums and inaccuracies as far as the chronology of things is concerned. Why are there no writers' credits on Wikipedia? Whoever writes an entry should take responsibility, or how does it work? Quote
Conclave Posted May 20, 2005 Report Posted May 20, 2005 The wikipedia site is interesting, but contains many inaccuracies. Cal, the father of acid rock?? ................Give me a break!! Mongo and Willie were never part of Shearing's group, although Willie did a few spot single recordings with Armando for George. West Side Story being panned ?...........By whom? Cal deserves more credit for being a catalyst, integrating Afro-Caribbean and North American Jazz to a point where it is now part of the mainstream scene- with many elements being absorbed into rock and pop! mikeweil Posted May 20, 2005 Report Posted May 20, 2005 As soon as I find the time I will register and correct that Wikipedia entry! Quote
GA Russell Posted May 6, 2006 Report Posted May 6, 2006 (edited) Yesterday being Cinco de Mayo, I recalled that it was the anniversary of Cal's passing, so I put on Cuban Fantasy. For music not released until 25 years after its recording, it's a great album! edit for typo Edited May 6, 2006 by GA Russell Quote

mikeweil Posted May 8, 2006 Report Posted May 8, 2006 (edited) As soon as I find the time I will register and correct that Wikipedia entry! I already started, but have too little time right now. No registration needed, BTW - just hit the edit button preceding the paragraph and you can go ahead. I'd be obliged if you would proofread the biographical details. GA Russell Posted May 6, 2007 Report Posted May 6, 2007 Today is the 25th anniversary of Cal's passing. This evening I have listened to my two recent Tjader acquisitions, Soul Sauce and Sounds Out Burt Bacharach. Quote
mikeweil Posted May 6, 2007 Report Posted May 6, 2007 Lemme see what fits into today's playlist ..... Quote
GA Russell Posted May 6, 2008 Report Posted May 6, 2008 May 5 has come around again, and tonight I am listening to Solar Heat. Quote
six string Posted May 6, 2008 Report Posted May 6, 2008 I forgot to play something yesterday for him but coincidently, I played Solar Heat on Sunday. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted May 6, 2008 Report Posted May 6, 2008 Ah, I didn't realise - but as it happens, I was playing the Monterey concerts CD yesterday. MG Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted May 6, 2008 Report Posted May 6, 2008 Cal Tjader MUST be in my top ten of artists consistently in regular rotation. I have dozens of his albums on vinyl and about 10 on CD. This time of year especially. Coincidentally, I was listening yesterday to the Verve collection "More than Mambo" which has several CT cuts. Quote
GA Russell Posted May 4, 2009 Report Posted May 4, 2009 It's May 5 once again, and I am going to play my two most recent Tjader acquisitions, Latin Kick and Monterey Concerts. Quote

Teasing the Korean Posted July 16, 2009 Report Posted July 16, 2009 Happy birthday. Just recently spun "Along Comes Cal" on Verve (mono). This one eluded me for a long time. Quote
Hot Ptah Posted July 16, 2009 Report Posted July 16, 2009 I will play "Soul Sauce" tonight--I love "Afro Blue" on that album. Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted July 18, 2009 Report Posted July 18, 2009 Played "Leyte" and "Black Orchid" at our gig tonight and mentioned Cal's birthday. One of my musical idols. Quote
GA Russell Posted May 5, 2010 Report Posted May 5, 2010 It's May 5 once again. I've gone over to grooveshark and am now listening to one I've never heard before called Here & There. Quote
tranemonk Posted May 6, 2010 Report Posted May 6, 2010 I'm still waiting on my request for a Cal Mosaic!!! (that and that damn Betty Carter Select they won't issue.... <_< ) Quote
yul Posted May 7, 2010 Report Posted May 7, 2010 I'm still waiting on my request for a Cal Mosaic!!! (that and that damn Betty Carter Select they won't issue.... <_< ) Cal Tjader Mosaic would be essential. What would you inlcude? I wouldn't mind a huge one. How about the complete Verve recordings? If that's too much for one set (maybe 8-10 cd's???), the stuff could be divided between live/studio or smaller/bigger groups. Quote
mikeweil Posted May 7, 2010 Report Posted May 7, 2010 (edited) A Complete Verve Studio Sessions would be an option - Cal recorded live for Verve only twice, and these could be taken care of as single CDs. There were 14 studio LPs - I think 8 CDs would be sufficient. But I don't think this will happen - neither Universal or Mosaic are interested enough. Bear Family would be a label I would ask ... Here's a list of the LPs: VerveV6-8419 Cal Tjader - InA Latin Bag VerveV6-8459 Cal Tjader - SaturdayNight, Sunday Night At The Blackhawk (live) VerveV6-8470 CalTjader Plays The Contemporary Music of Mexico and Brazil VerveV6-8472 Anita O'Day & Cal Tjader - TimeFor Two VerveV6-8507 Cal Tjader - SeveralShades Of Jade VerveV6-8531 Cal Tjader - SoñaLibré VerveV6-8575 Cal Tjader - BreezeFrom The East VerveV6-8585 Cal Tjader - WarmWave VerveV6-8614 Cal Tjader - SoulSauce VerveV6-8626 Cal Tjader - SoulBird: Whiffenpoof VerveV6-8637 Cal Tjader - SoulBurst VerveV6-8651 Cal Tjader & Eddie Palmieri - elsonido nuevo VerveV6-8671 Cal Tjader - AlongComes Cal (includes one live track - I have no idea if more was preserved) VerveV6-8730 Cal Tjader - HipVibrations VerveV6-8769 Cal Tjader - TheProphet The companion LP with Palmieri on Tico would be a nice bonus: Bamboleate. The only unreleased material I know of are some tracks from the Soul Sauce sessions and a few with Gary McFarland - but I doubt the latter still exist. Edited May 7, 2010 by mikeweil Quote
