tranemonk Posted March 15, 2005 Report Posted March 15, 2005 what do you guys think of this box??? Especially the sound? thanks Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted March 15, 2005 Report Posted March 15, 2005 I have not heard the cds but had all the material on Atlas lps from Japan. They are clearly (and clinically recorded in the Japanese manner). Much of the music is first rate and the sound will please. Quote
Ron S Posted March 15, 2005 Report Posted March 15, 2005 I like this set a lot--now even more so knowing that it has the Nessa Seal of Approval. Quote

kh1958 Posted March 15, 2005 Report Posted March 15, 2005 The set sounds like what would happen if you mixed together Pepper's classic 1950s Contemporary LPs with his classic 1970s-80s Galaxy recordings, the resulting being very pleasing to the ear. Quote
Brad Posted March 15, 2005 Report Posted March 15, 2005 This is a fantastic, fantastic set. One of my favorites and I think the sound is fabulous. The notes by his widow are not too great but that's a minor annoyance. If you don't have, get it. Quote
cho Posted March 15, 2005 Report Posted March 15, 2005 The sound is very good. Contents wise, I like the Complete Galaxy Box more. More fire and more urgent Quote
mjzee Posted March 15, 2005 Report Posted March 15, 2005 If you want to test the music, the entire box is available on eMusic. I downloaded it and am very happy. Quote
sidewinder Posted March 15, 2005 Report Posted March 15, 2005 This was one of the boxes that Zweitausendeins listed for a while at about 20 euros ( ). Very enjoyable set of music - nothing earth-shattering but no worse for that. I have some of the Japanese LPs on Atlas and, as has been mention, the sound and production are exemplary. Quote
andersf Posted March 16, 2005 Report Posted March 16, 2005 The set is very good, definitetly recommended. About the sound, and there is an earlier thread about this, CDI is in mono. Quote

Justin V Posted June 5, 2023 Report Posted June 5, 2023 (edited) I'm not sure if this was discussed elsewhere, but Omnivore reissued this music. I was delighted/dismayed to see that there were several extra tracks that didn't make the original box set. Fortunately, my library has a streaming/download service that'll allow me to get the missing tracks without buying more CDs or paying $3 per track (gulp) for a lossless download. For those who are also interested, there are 2 tracks from the Stitt session with Russ Freeman, 3 from the Stitt session with Lou Levy, 2 tracks from the Jack Sheldon session (1 vocal ), 1 from the Pete Jolly session and 1 from the Watrous session. There were no added tracks from the Konitz and Manne sessions. So is this the several volumes of "Art Pepper presents: West Coast Sessions!"? Is there a box with all of them or no? Quote

Brad Posted June 6, 2023 Report Posted June 6, 2023 (edited) This is the first I’ve heard that Omnivore re-issued the Hollywood All Star Sessions since the right to these were owned by Fantasy, which is now owned by Concord. Did you intend to refer to the Artist House Recordings, which Omnivore issued a couple of years ago. If not, do you have a link. Edited June 6, 2023 by Brad Quote

Brad Posted June 6, 2023 Report Posted June 6, 2023 Thanks.  I compared the first two with the equivalent of the Hollywood Star Sessions and looks to be the same so since since I have the earlier box I will stick with that. Quote
