Dan Gould Posted March 15, 2005 Report Posted March 15, 2005 Is that the Delmark release? I'm wondering about that one. Can you confirm that there's no varitone sax on it? Thanks Mark. Quote

Dan, Yes, it is on Delmark; I left the disc in my office earlier today. I'll check it out in the morning and respond! Mark Edited March 15, 2005 by sheldonm Quote

sheldonm Posted March 15, 2005 Author Report Posted March 15, 2005 can i assume from these posts that sonny left his dreaded varitone attachment home for this recording date? Well.....I can tell you that I listened to it a few times prior to reading the liners. It didn't sound like one is attached. Then I read the notes and it mentions that he does indeed use it. It also says that it was "used lightly". I really can't hear it at all....nice recording! Quote
Soul Stream Posted March 15, 2005 Report Posted March 15, 2005 I actually like the varitone. On some songs Sonny got a not-so-good violin-type sound which wasn't happening. But Lou Donaldson and others sound nice on it, as did Sonny on some, not all, things. It's a nice change of pace for me and blends with the organ well imho. Quote

I bought it at the Jazz Record Mart a couple weeks ago and the recording is on Delmark (they are one and the same); I guess that's why they have it early. Mark Quote

king ubu Posted October 2, 2011 Report Posted October 2, 2011 bump - what about these: http://www.delmark.com/delmark.563.htm http://www.delmark.com/delmark.426.htm is Stitt ON or is he merely coasting, or a mix of both? been of a hefty Stitt binge lately, playing the Mosaic a a few dozen other discs, up and down, down and up... mikeweil Posted October 2, 2011 Report Posted October 2, 2011 Stitt and Patterson was a great pairing - Patterson always inspired Stitt to good, no-nonsense playing. I have only the second of the two Delmark CDs, but I can recommend it. They are pretty much like the Stitt-Patterson albums on Prestige. Quote
king ubu Posted October 2, 2011 Report Posted October 2, 2011 Yeah, thought so... guess I need them! Quote
