Chrome Posted March 14, 2005 Report Posted March 14, 2005 I just picked this up; it's my first disc by Manne as a leader,* and it's very good ... kind of an "advanced West Coast" sound to my ears. It's on Concord and also features Conte Candoli, trumpet; Frank Strozier. alto/flute; Mike Wofford, piano; and Monty Budwig, bass. Although I can't compare it to much else he's done, it certainly sounds more "individualistic" than what I've heard of him with, for example, Stan Getz. *Even I think it's kind of a weird place to start, but I was placing an order with Daedulus and saw this for $5.99 ... an impulse buy. On a slight tangent ... even back in the day, how did he ever get away with "The Manne Hole"? Quote
BFrank Posted March 14, 2005 Report Posted March 14, 2005 I picked that album up from eMusic a while back. I liked it at first, but it didn't wear on me well. Maybe I should give it another listen. Quote
Dan Gould Posted March 14, 2005 Report Posted March 14, 2005 I think I picked this up during the last Barnes and Noble $3.99 Concord cut-out sale. Should be noted that while its on Concord, it was recorded in the sixties but not issued then. Don't recall off hand the story of how it got to be issued on Concord, but this isn't one of those Concord "recreate the past" type of dates. Quote
Stereojack Posted March 15, 2005 Report Posted March 15, 2005 The session was recorded June 21/22, 1967, right after "Jazz Gunn", which was issued on Atlantic. For whatever reason, Atlantic did not release this session at the time. Concord released it in 1976 - don't know if they acquired it from Atlantic or from Shelly himself. jack Quote
MartyJazz Posted March 15, 2005 Report Posted March 15, 2005 I also grabbed this at that Barnes & Noble $3.99 Concord sale a couple of years ago. It's an excellent session, the cut that really knocks me out being "Bleep", a Mike Wofford homage to Monk. I think this particular Manne group with Candoli and Strozier was terrific. Quote
