Chrome Posted March 14, 2005 Report Posted March 14, 2005 Has anyone heard the albumb by Petra Haden (Charlie Haden's daughter) in which she covers The Who Sell Out using only her voice to do all the different parts? Sounds intriguing. (I've got a vague memory of seeing something about this on the board, but a 30-day search didn't turn anything up.) Quote
RDK Posted March 14, 2005 Report Posted March 14, 2005 Haven't heard the album yet, but Petra's been getting a lot of press lately. Check out the latest Entertainment Weekly - even Pete likes this one! Quote
Chrome Posted March 14, 2005 Author Report Posted March 14, 2005 Here's an audio link: Petra Thanks ... I can't access that at work, but I'll check it out at home. Quote
Jim Dye Posted March 15, 2005 Report Posted March 15, 2005 I just listened to this on the way in from work. I really really enjoyed it. I started out thinking it was kind of a stunt, but by the time the record was over, I was sold. er Sold Out rather! In fact, I think that Petra Haden is the perfect woman for me. (don't tell my wife.) When I was a teen, I was a rabid Who fan. They were my band. Any woman who would take the time to lovingly re-record The Who Sell Out part by part with her voice has to be something special. Hey, her dad is pretty cool too! Wow. Seriously, this record is a lot of fun. Quote
Guy Berger Posted April 25, 2005 Report Posted April 25, 2005 Wow... I just listened to some clips from this on amazon. The Who Sell Out is one of my favorite albums by that band and it sounds like she does a really good/interesting job on the tunes. Seems like a bit of a novelty, though, not sure I want to blow 15 bucks on it. Guy Quote
ghost of miles Posted April 25, 2005 Report Posted April 25, 2005 I want to hear the Who record--I've really been enjoying her CD with Bill Frisell. I'm going to see the Decemberists here in B-town next month, and she'll be singing & playing with them. Quote
Alexander Posted April 26, 2005 Report Posted April 26, 2005 I've been really into the Who lately, so this was a serendipidious release for me. I downloaded it off of iTunes, and I've enjoyed what I've heard. I prefer Pete, Roger, John, and Keith, but this is good for a larf... "What's for tea, mum?" Quote

I've never used iTunes, but I might be tempted to buy a few. That way I don't get stuck with "Silas Stingy". If you had to recommend just 4 or 5 tracks, which ones? I figure "I Can See for Miles" and "Tattoo" are essential. What else? Guy Quote

I think the whole thing is essential, but if you only want the "important" tracks, I'd get "Armenea City in the Sky," "Mary Ann with the Shaky Hand," "Tattoo," "I Can See for Miles," and "Rael." I love the commercials, so I'd want to have them as well (especially "Oderono"). Quote
Big Al Posted April 26, 2005 Report Posted April 26, 2005 Listened to clips on Amazon yesterday. Quite impressive! Don't know if I would enjoy a whole album of it, but it's interesting and brave to say the least! Quote
blake Posted April 27, 2005 Report Posted April 27, 2005 I seem to recall reading somewhere that Mike Watt put Haden up to this. That the original is one of his favorite records. And that this project was done very tongue-in-cheek (I haven't heard it yet). I saw the Decemberists recently in Dallas. Great show. Haden had been with the band about 2 weeks at that point. She contributed backing vocals and violin on most all songs. Her show highlights included a couple lengthy violin solos and an A cappella cover of a kate bush tune. The Kate Bush cover was really well done but made me realize how talented Bush really is, you could see Haden struggle a bit with some parts. Bush (to me) always seemed to sing everything so easily. Jim, is this your website? Petra Haden Shrine Quote

Saw the Decemberists Wednesday night here in Bloomington... amazing! That's the most joyous concert I've been to in years. Unfortunately Petra Haden's been really sick and missed the show. Bummer (I've been listening to her CD with Frisell quite a lot, along with the Decemberists' PICARESQUE), but damn, the show was so great that her absence was just a minor disappointment. Hope she recovers. Quote
